West Ham United’s central defender James Tomkins is facing a possible prison sentence after being charged with assaulting a police officer in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Tomkins was refused sentry to an Essex nightclub, and security staff called the police after Tomkins became agressive.

The West Ham defender, who has been a reliable stand out performer for the Hammers was then taken into Police custody after refusing arrest, from drunk and disordaly behavior.

Tomkins had played for the Hammers just hours earlier on the Saturday afternoon, after his side lost 3-1 away at Manchester United at Old Trafford, with the result at Old Trafford leaving the Hammers in 17th place in the Premier League table, with the East London club firmly situated in a real relegation battle.

The Hammers defender then reportedly struck a police officer in a drunken assault at the trendy Essex nightspot.

A police spokesman said: “Officers were called by security staff from the Sugar Hut Village shortly before 00:30 GMT on Sunday following reports of a disturbance.”

He added that Mr Tomkins, from Brentwood, was later charged with one count of assaulting a police officer, one count of resisting arrest and one count of being drunk and disorderly in a public place.

The defender was released on police bail until his court appearance.

Tomkins has spent his whole career to date at Upton Park, coming through the clubs famed youth academy, before making his debut in 2008.

West Ham have so far refused to comment on the matter.
