Van der Sar to make United return

Manchester United could turn to their former shot-stopper Edwin Van der Sar for a potential coaching role this summer.

Chris Woods, the current goalkeeping coach, was brought in by David Moyes and was kept despite the Scot’s sacking and the departure of other backroom staff including Steve Round and Jimmy Lumsden.

But Woods is also believed to be on his way out with the arrival of Louis van Gaal, who is keen to revitalise United so many changes will be made.

Van der Sar was originally offered a coaching role back in 2011 by Sir Alex Ferguson following the Dutchman’s retirement but he turned down the role to spend more time with his family.

He has however remained an ambassador for the club and even took a Masters in Sports Management before becoming Ajax’s marketing director.

But van Gaal. who coached Ajax and Van der Sar to Champions League glory in 1995, could persuade him to make a return as his experience and knowledge of the game will be a useful asset in teaching David De Gea amongst others.

Van Gaal, who is keen to give Giggs a coaching role, is believed to have also held talks with the veteran.
