Vermaelen to complete move after World Cup

Man United are hoping to push through the signing of Thomas Vermaelen after the World Cup. A wage package is believed to have been agreed in principle and the player himself is reportedly confident that a deal will be completed soon.

Sources are also claiming that the defender has been told to keep his mouth shut about the move but it looks like the Belgia could be a Man United player when the new season starts. He is in line for quite a significant pay rise at Old Trafford, with his new deal edging him towards ÂŁ100,000 a week.

Vermaelen has little desire to stay at Arsenal after falling behind Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker in the pecking order. His current Gunners deal does expire in 12 months time, so Arsene Wenger may be happy to cash-in on the player while he still can.

The Red Devils were originally told he wouldn’t be leaving the Emirates but it is now expected that an ÂŁ11m deal will be completed once the World Cup is over. New boss Louis Van Gaal sees him as an ideal replacement for Nemanja Vidic (and also Rio Ferdinand) who have both now left the club.
