Wenger has worked ‘minor miracles’

Arsenal legend Bob Wilson claims that Arsene Wenger has performed ‘minor miracles’ with Arsenal this season, and shouldn’t be judged on trophies alone. The Gunners boss was branded a ‘specialist in faliure’ by Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho for his nine trophyless seasons at the club since 2005, but Wilson has leapt to the Frenchman’s defence.

“I look not only on his great achievements from when he first joined the club,” said Wilson, “but also what’s happened since then. With building a new stadium and all the debt that came with that, but still getting Champions League every season.”

“Obviously nine years is a long time for a club like Arsenal, but who has been winning things? Yes, Wigan Athletic won the FA Cup last year but you need to play well and have the luck of the draw, but you are talking about major things, being Champions of Europe or your country, then it all becomes secondary.

Wilson then labelled Jose Mourinho’s comments as ‘despicable’, and feels the true value of success is not all about silverware,

“What Arsenal have achieved with the financial limitations is just unbelievable. We know Manchester City have Sheikh and Chelsea have Roman, and they have won things because of the money they’ve spent. Chelsea had not won the league for over 50 years before Abramovich arrived. But this season the Arsenal board have made a statement by signing Mersut Ozil.”

“If Arsenal win the league this year, that acheivement will be clost in rank to the ‘invincibles’ season.”
