You’ll see the best of Ozil soon, says Mertesacker

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has admitted that Mesut Ozil’s head has dropped in recent weeks due to some poor performances, but he is confident that his counterpart will be back to his best soon.

The German international hasn’t scored in eight games and he even missed a penalty against Marseille on Tuesday night.

However, he did make up for that penalty miss by setting up Jack Wilshere for The Gunners’ second goal of the night.

Arsenal captain for the night, Per Mertesacker, believes Ozil will be back to his best soon, but he did reveal that at half-time, the players did have to pick up the midfielder as he was gutted after his penalty miss.

“He looks like his head is going down but especially at half-time we said we don’t care, just get on with it”. Mertesacker said.

“And that’s just what he did, especially in the second half when we scored the second goal.

“He was the threat and he was in the right position to cross the ball to Jack.

“He never gave up despite the penalty that he missed. He’s always a threat and we’re very delighted with him. I think he is making good progress.

“He’s in good form – and I think we will see more from him. He gets himself into good positions so the goals will come for sure.”

“Mesut moves well between the lines, so it’s always difficult to defend against him.

“He’s always a threat, he can play the ball, he’s the one who goes deep all the time.

“When the centre-back comes out with him, there’s always space for others to go into. He’s the member of our team who helps us to create more chances.

“We’re on a good team so we should continue that to maintain our level and maintain where we are in the Champions League and the league.”
