Bacary Sagna tells Arsenal to cough up £20m to keep him

0

Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has told the club to cough up £20million in order to keep him at the Emirates Stadium.

The Frenchman’s current deal expires in the Summer and due to the transfer rules, he can now officially start talking to other clubs about a possible Summer transfer, and it is believed that Inter Milan and Galatasaray are keen on signing the right-back.

The 31-year-old has already rejected two new deals from Arsenal, both rumoured to be 12-month deals worth around £60k-a-week, and in final crunch talks with the club, Sagna has asked for £120k-a-week and a three-year deal.

The talks are ongoing between the two parties, but Sagna is holding out for more money and a longer deal, and the Frenchman also wants a £6million signing-on-fee paid in monthly instalments.

It is believed that Wenger is desperate to keep hold of Sagna and he doesn’t believe Carl Jenkinson is ready to be a first-team regular.

GARTH CROOKS’ TEAM OF THE WEEK

0

With another exciting weekend of Premier League football over with, BBC pundit Garth Crooks has put together his ‘Team of the Week’.

Impressive wins for Aston Villa, Liverpool and Arsenal mean that some of their players have taken a role in Crooks’ team, and here is his full starting XI.

GOALKEEPER – David Marshall (Cardiff)

David Marshall’s performance at Goodison Park was so impressive it looked like Everton were never going to beat the Scotland international. Everton peppered his goal and Romelu Lukaku, Gerard Deulofeu and Kevin Mirallas all brought brilliant saves out of him in the first half.

DEFENDER – Jon Flanagan (Liverpool)

This time it was at Old Trafford in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Manchester United and again I saw young Flanagan cope with another big occasion. At no stage in the game did Flanagan look nervous or overawed. United even got Adnan Januzaj to swap wings in order to try to get at the full-back but he got no change whatsoever.

DEFENDER – Laurent Koscielny (Arsenal)

What is causing Tottenham fans such anxiety is not the fact that Arsenal are capable of playing some blinding football on their day but their miserly defence look impregnable. Laurent Koscielny has been at the heart of that and his block to deny Nacer Chadli’s low shot and allow Arsenal to keep a clean sheet in the Gunners’ 1-0 win at White Hart Lane epitomised that.

DEFENDER – Martin Demichelis (Man City)

Demichelis seemed to take complete control of Man City’s back four and looked like a man who relished his new-found responsibility. Any more moments of madness from Kompany and Manuel Pellegrini may have to consider a longer rest for his captain and more responsibility for Demichelis.

DEFENDER – Seamus Coleman (Everton)

He maybe should have apologised to David Marshall for the fortunate strike that robbed Cardiff of a deserved point. But the Everton defender has been an extra attacking outlet for Roberto Martinez this season and was in the right place at the right time to net once again.

MIDFIELDER – Fabian Delph (Aston Villa)

They were even better at Villa Park and Delph was the star of the show. I know Guy Mowbray asked the midfielder in his post-match interview whether he meant his Cruyff flick for his goal. The look of disbelief on Delph’s face was a picture – he definitely intended it.

MIDFIELDER – Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)

Not only did his arch-rivals take his team apart, he had to watch Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard do it for the Merseyside club. After all this was someone Ferguson called “not a top, top player” in his autobiography. Not a top player? What was Sir Alex thinking?

MIDFIELDER – David Silva (Man City)

We know the Spaniard is one of the best playmakers in the country, and his assists have always been amongst the top players in the league, but if he can add a few more goals to his tally City will be in with a great chance.

MIDFIELDER – Mikel Arteta (Arsenal)

Against a Tottenham side that enjoyed long spells of possession, Arsenal needed leaders and found one in Arteta. He is proving to be the man that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger can rely on in any situation.

MIDFIELDER – Tomas Rosicky (Arsenal)

To play for Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger you have to be an excellent technician. Well players don’t come much better in that respect than Tomas Rosicky. The little Czech maestro’s technique for Arsenal’s solitary goal against Spurs, in just the second minute of the game, was the telling moment and wonderful to watch.

FORWARD – Jay Rodriguez (Southampton)

The Southampton striker scored one goal in their 4-2 win over Norwich, created another and nearly broke the bar with a chance. However it was his superb lay-off in the passage of play that led to Morgan Schneiderlin’s opener that had me licking my lips.

What do you think about this side? Has Crooks missed anyone out?

Mata promises ‘storm will pass’

0

David Moyes has endured a disappointing first season at Old Trafford after being charged with the task of replacing the legendary Alex Ferguson, with the Premier League champions seventh in the table and facing up to the prospect of missing out on top-four finish.

United’s misery was compounded by a humbling 3-0 defeat to rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford, with a brace of Steven Gerrard penalties and a Luis Suarez strike condemning United to a fifth home defeat of the season in the top flight.

Moyes has also seen his side exit the League Cup and FA Cup this season, and United must overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit against Greek champions Olympiacos if they are to reach the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

Attacking midfielder Mata – who joined United for a record £37.1million fee in January – was left to reflect on another frustrating performance, but the Spain international is confident United will come good.

“The storm will pass and the sun will rise again. I have no doubt,” said Mata wrote in his personal blog.

“Besides, no one said this would be easy but this is football. It gives you fantastic moments but also very hard times you have to cope with, when you have to show pride and professionalism until the end.

“There are no words to describe your (fans) support in the stadium. In games like yesterday it makes me mad not being able to give you what you deserve.

“I know there is nothing I can say right now but at least I want you to know how I feel.”

David Moyes admits he doesn’t have big enough feet to fill Fergusons shoes

0

The Premier League champions’ disappointing season took its most painful twist yesterday as Moyes’ men were ripped apart by fierce rivals Liverpool.

Wayne Rooney described the 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford as one of his worst days in football and the result has only increased the question marks over Moyes’ suitability at filling Ferguson’s shoes.

The dejected United boss admitted afterwards that following in the footsteps of the legendary Scot has proved even harder than he had envisaged.

‘The job was always going to be hard,’ he said. ‘Harder [than I thought]? Yes I would say so yes.’

So far the United fans have stuck by Moyes loyally but the former Everton manager is realistic enough to know that won’t continue for ever.

‘Results will always dictate that but I can only tell you what I’ve seen today and the supporters were terrific,’ he said.

Rooney describes Liverpool defeat as a ‘Nightmare’ and the ‘worst days in football’

0

Wayne Rooney described Manchester United’s defeat to Liverpool as a nightmare and one of the lowest points in his career after losing 3-0 to their rivals at Old Trafford.

Rooney’s side are now 14 points behind Liverpool, and are all but out of the race for the top four.

Rooney and strike partner Robin van Persie struggled to get into the game, whichs saw Steven Gerrard score two penalties, miss another, and Luis Suarez round off a perfect win for Liverpool

Rooney told MUTV: ‘It’s a nightmare. It’s one of the worst days I’ve ever had in football.’

United boss David Moyes lamented the concession of the second penalty, just moments after the second half began, as the key moment in his team’s demise.

Phil Jones barged into Joe Allen and prompted referee Mark Clattenburg to point to the spot.

‘It was a game littered with penalty kicks and decisions – some were right and some were wrong. It was a tough day for us,’ he said.

‘At half-time we were 1-0 down to a penalty kick, I didn’t think there was much in it. To give away one 20 seconds or so into the second half it made it a real upward climb for us after that.’

When asked if Liverpool were the better side, though, Moyes was blunt, saying: ‘Yep.

‘They played better than us. Some decisions that went for them, which were important at the right time with the penalty kicks that got.

‘But they earnt them at times, but on some occasions they didn’t earn them at all.’

Liverpool’s third penalty was the most contentious when Daniel Sturridge appeared to dive under pressure from Nemanja Vidic, who was handed his second caution and sent off.

Moyes preferred not to expand on his thoughts about referee Clattenburg’s decision making.

‘As you well know it would be better if I don’t talk about them,’ he said.

‘That’s up to the authorities.’

Moyes was more forthcoming on whether his side should have been awarded a penalty of their own for handball by Glen Johnson.

‘I thought we did,’ he said.

‘It hits his hand. It’s not an awful lot different to the one Rafa had (for Liverpool’s first penalty).’

Olivier Giroud’s wife ‘tells him to get a move back to France’

0

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has reportedly been ordered to get a move back to France …by his wife.

Recently Jennifer Giroud shut her Twitter account after the Arsenal and France striker admitted to cheating on her.

Just hours before the Gunners’ FA Cup clash with Liverpool last month, the 27-year-old apologised following allegations that he had slept with model Celia Kay.

A source told the Sun on Sunday: “She’s agreed to take him back, but only on the condition they leave London and England.

“He’s desperate to save the marriage because he knows how stupid he’s been – so he is going along with what she wants.”

The report adds to speculation over the future of the France striker, 27, after he was apparently spotted on Thursday meeting with ‘super agent’ Muzzi Ozcan.

Giroud had his breakthrough season in Ligue 1 at Montpellier.

His goals pushed the club to a first-ever league title and they also won him a call up to the France national team for the European Championships.

In June 2012 he signed for Arsenal.

On Sunday, Giroud played in Arsenal’s 1-0 win at rivals Tottenham.

Manchester United are ready to battle Arsenal for German wonder-boy Julian Draxler

0

United made another check on Arsenal’s £37million target in Schalke’s 2-1 win in Augsburg on Friday night.

Midfielder Draxler, 20, gave an eye-catching performance to underline his exciting potential.

He made one of Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar’s two match-winning goals.

And Draxler also had a goal disallowed in Schalke’s victory.

United boss David Moyes has identified Germany as the place to recruit midfield talent.

In addition to Draxler, United are in pole position to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan.

And Moyes is also an admirer of Gundogan’s team-mate – Marco Reus – and Bayern Munich’s Toni Kroos as he assesses a long list of summer targets.

Arsenal have upper hand on Manchester United in transfer chase for Matthias Ginter

0

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is heading the £8million race for Germany’s new star centre-half Matthias Ginter. Wenger sent chief scout Steve Rowley to watch the recently-capped Freiburg defender in the Bundesliga this weekend.

The Gunners have been on the trail of 6ft 3in 20-year-old for months, but are now stepping up their interest ahead of a summer bid.

Ginter made his full international debut against Chile and is tipped to go to the World Cup finals as cover for the likes of Per Mertesacker.

Wenger sees Ginter as a long-term legend at the Emirates although he might have to settle for a place on the bench initially if he joins.

Manchester United have also been keeping an eye on the player, but Wenger has strong relations with Freiburg and would have a good chance in the chase.

With Thomas Vermaelen likely to leave at the end of a frustrating campaign, Wenger needs a new commanding defender – and Ginter fits the bill.

Liverpool keeper Mignolet says sorry for giving team-mate Agger a black eye

0

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger took to Twitter on Sunday to show off the black eye that his own team-mate Simon Mignolet gave to him during the Reds’ 3-0 win against Manchester United.

Agger found himself on the end of a Mignolet punch as the Liverpool goalkeeper attempted to whack the ball clear from a United corner, but managed to hit the Danish international right in the eye socket.

The 29-year-old’s eye instantly ballooned and left Agger looking a bit annoyed with the shot stopper, but the pair used their social media account to patch things up.

Agger tweeted: ‘Great game, great atmosphere!! Hardcore keeper.. With friends like that, who needs enemies?’

The former Sunderland keeper jokingly replied: ‘My sincere apologies also to the wife!’

Luckily for Liverpool, Agger was able to play on with the injury and managed the full 90 minutes as his team eased to a 3-0 win thanks to two Steven Gerrard penalties and an 84th minute strike from Luis Suarez.

Manchester United vs Liverpool: Match Reaction

0

Liverpool made their title ambitions clear on Sunday with a dominant 3-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford. Two Steven Gerrard penalties and another from Luis Suarez saw Liverpool take all 3 points on one of United’s darkest days of the season, and Liverpool will feel they could have had many more.

The first of the goals arrived when United right back Rafael handled the ball in the box to give away a penalty following a clever touch from Suarez, just minutes after being booked, and captain Steven Gerrard keeping his nerve to send De Gea the wrong way. Gerrard converted another penalty won by Joe Allen just a minute after the half time break. Suarez added a third goal six minutes from time, but that was after Gerrard had hit the post with another penalty with ten minutes to go. Rafael stayed on the field for the game, but Nemanja Vidic was given his marching orders after fouling Daniel Sturridge for thr third penalty.

Brendan Rodgers spoke to the media after the game,

Our dominance in the match was clear. We had confidence and belief coming here that we could get a result. We could arguably have scored five or six and that is testament to the quality of the players.

”We won’t get carried away. It’s a wonderful result be we need to move on and focus on winning our next game. If we continue to play with that intensity, we will continue to win games”.

Manchester United manager David Moyes was the less happy of the two,

I thought there was not a great deal in it at half time. We had just started to play a bit better towards the end of the first half.

“It was important we came out in the second half and got a goal back but instead we gave one away and that made it very difficult for us.

I don’t think I had even got seated in the dugout when we gave it [the second penalty] away. We were going for it but it always left us open to a counter.”

United’s top 4 hopes are surely over now, while Liverpool’s title challenge looks as strong as ever.

A boost for Arsenal as Wolfsburg decline transfer move for Bayern Munich striker Mario Mandzukic

0

The 27-year-old does not fit into Bayern boss Pep Guardiola’s future plans at the Allianz Arena and looks destined to leave Munich this summer, despite scoring 21 goals for club and country this campaign.

With Robert Lewandowski on his way to the Bundesliga giants from Borussia Dortmund on a five-year contract, Mandzukic looks increasingly likely to be looking for new employers during the close season.

And the Gunners could be in the frame to land Mandzukic, according to reports, if they look to add more firepower to a team which currently has only top scorer Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski available up front.

Nicklas Bendtner’s latest problems mean he is likely to leave the Emirates Stadium at the end of the season while 21-year-old Frenchman Yaya Sanogo is still learning the English game.

They will be further boosted by the news Wolfsburg manager Klaus Allofs distanced the club from a move for Mandzukic, who is believed to be valued at around £20million by Bayern.

Match Reaction: Aston Villa v Chelsea

0

All that separated these two sides in a heated match at Villa Park was a late Fabian Delph goal, which shocked the league leaders as they had had clear cut opportunites to score throughout the match.

Chelsea had the ball in the net through Nemanja Matic but it was ruled out for handball in the first half and in the second, Chelsea saw 2 players and their manager sent off. The first was Willian for picking up a second yellow card, from which they never really recovered their tempo and then later on in the match Ramires was sent off for a lunge on Karim El Ahmadi, and complaints from manager Jose Mourinho lead to him being sent to the stands.

Villa made their man advantage count as Fabian Delph cleverly flciked home a Marc Albrighton cross in the 82nd minute to cap off a disastrous evening for the Blues.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho’s reaction: “If I speak I’m in big trouble, and I don’t want to be in big trouble, and if I speak I’m accused of bringing the game into disrepute.

The referees do what they do, they do and they go home, they do and they don’t go to the press, they refuse even to exchange a couple of words when one person, like me who has been in football for so long, asks politely, ‘Can you speak with me for five seconds?’ and it’s ‘No, I don’t speak with you for five seconds’.

We have to put it behind us, there is no other solution.”

Aston Villa manager paul Lambert’s reaction: “I’ve been here nearly two seasons and we’ve had some big moments in big games, but that’s the best one we’ve had.

It was a fantastic all-round team performance, let alone anything else. I thought we were well worth it, I really did.

We were up against a team that not long ago won the Champions League, is vying to win the Premier League this year and is vying to win the Champions League again.

It was an extraordinary effort. I didn’t think we were inferior and I thought we were well worthy of winning it.”

United to offer Shinji Kagawa plus cash deal to land Marco Reus

0

United boss David Moyes is determined to make the club a force in the Premier League again next term after a hugely-disappointing debut season at Old Trafford.

And he has targeted Dortmund playmaker Reus, 24, as the man to help turn around the Red Devils’ flagging fortunes, according to reports this morning.

He will try to lure Borussia into a deal by offering former Dortmund favourite Kagawa back to the club in a player-plus-cash bid.

Reus has been a target for Moyes and United for some time and the reigning Premier League champions failed to sign the Germany star in January.

Kagawa, meanwhile, was a big hit in Germany during his spell with Borussia between 2010 and 2012 and would be welcomed back warmly by the club after a generally disappointing time in England.

Giroud holds secret talks with top agent Ozcan

0

The striker held a 45-minute meeting with UK-based adviser Muzzi Ozcan at Aubaine restaurant in Hampstead at around 5.30pm on Thursday evening.

Ozcan helped broker Galatasaray’s recruitment of manager Roberto Mancini and led the Turkish club’s attempts to sign Chelsea’s John Terry last year.

As well as Turkey, he is known to have strong contacts in France, particularly with Paris St-Germain’s Qatari owners. Ozcan is not Giroud’s contracted agent.

Giroud’s agent Mickael Manuello, who was not present, insisted the meeting was meant purely for commercial purposes.

Manuello also denied Giroud was plotting an exit strategy out of Arsenal, saying he is fully focused on winning the Barclays Premier League and the FA Cup with the Gunners.

Giroud faced allegations of an extramarital affair last month and sources close to the player suggest he is under pressure from his family to quit London.

Mourinho demands that Thibaut Courtois signs a new contract

0

Courtois is in his third season with Atletico Madrid, but is due to return to Chelsea this summer.

However, with his contract at Stamford Bridge expiring in 2016, the Blues are keen to see the 21-year-old put pen-to-paper on fresh terms.

Courtois has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, but insisted he is not considering quitting Chelsea.

However, the Belgian international is interested in another season on loan at Atletico, if Petr Cech continues as Jose Mourinho’s first-choice keeper.

Reports in Spain claim Mourinho will only allow such an agreement should Courtois extend his contract with the west London club.

Atletico owner Miguel Angel Gil Marin has flown to London several times to try and secure Courtois’ services, who has said he will make a decision at the end of the season.
