Bale Reveals ‘Idol’ Ronaldo Has Helped Him Settle

0

Gareth Bale has admitted that he’s still coming to terms with life in Madrid, but says his ‘idol’ Christiano Ronaldo has helped him with the transition.

The Welshman left Tottenham to join Real Madrid for a world record £86million transfer fee last summer and has credited the world’s former most expensive player for supporting him.

In an interview Bale said: ‘He is a great teammate and friend. He always gives me lots of advice and is helping me a great deal.’

‘He was my idol before I met him and that’s even more the case now. He has made everything a lot easier for me. We can strike up a great partnership on the pitch. ‘To play with him every week and watch him in training, I kind of learn off him. It’s important for me to see what he does and I can hopefully improve myself as a player.’

Bale started of his Real Madrid career with a setback due to injury but has recently started to return to the player the world really knows, the one that ultimately carried Spurs last season

He went on to say: ‘I thought it was going to be easier, but bit by bit I am learning the language. It is vital for me to learn to speak Spanish to feel more integrated. My teammates help me to feel comfortable’.

Are Gareth Bale and Christiano Ronaldo the dealiest partnership in world football?

Arsene Wenger: ‘We need to win back fans’

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes his side need to win back the fans and get them back believing after they’ve suffered two disappointing performances on the trot.

The Gunners were thrashed 5-1 at Anfield on Saturday before putting in a woeful performance midweek against Manchester United, and now they face Brendan Rodgers’ side once again, but this time, in the FA Cup.

Earlier in the week, Wenger said if he could hand select his next opponent, it would have been Liverpool, but the boss knows that his side must win back the fans and get them believing again.

“I sense a huge feeling from the crowd to help the team but we have to strengthen that belief with our performance,” the manager said.

“The crowd will no doubt be behind us [against Liverpool] but let’s put the vibes out that we have a go and they will be behind us. They were hugely behind us on Wednesday night, [but] they were frustrated at the end of the game like we were.

“If they were not behind the team that would be a surprise. We are one point off the lead, we play in the Champions League and we play in the FA Cup. If, on top of that, we have not got a crowd behind us that would be absolutely unbelievable.

“We are professional football players. That means we have to cope with every single thing [from] the crowd. That is the job.

“After that if you can help [get the fans] behind the team that makes us even stronger. But we cannot expect too much. Let’s have the attitude to have the crowd behind us. They were behind us at Liverpool, when we were 4-0 down.”

Brendan Rodgers out to beat ‘haunted’ Arsenal

0

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is ready to upset Arsenal fans once again as he tries to knock them out of the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.

Rodgers believes The Gunners will still be haunted from their 5-1 mauling at Anfield last weekend, and he is ready to produce the same display to knock Arsene Wenger’s men out of the cup at the Emirates Stadium.

Earlier in the season Rodgers took his side to North London and came away with nothing as they were easily beaten thanks to goals from Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey, however, neither of those players will be playing tomorrow, and The Reds boss is ready to inflict more pain on Wenger and co.

‘You could see Arsenal were nervous in the game against Manchester United the other night,’ he said. ‘It’s never easy when you get exposed like that but mainly it was down to our brilliance on the day really. We were outstanding.

‘Usually a team will get time to get over a defeat like that so, to come across us so quickly afterwards, it will be interesting to see the effects. Normally you get time to regroup.

‘Arsenal will be motivated for this game. Players at this level are really competitive and will want to show the defeat is past them. But if we can get anywhere near the level we were in the league game we will have a great chance of winning.’

Arsenal’s Arnold transfer plans dealt a blow.

0

Arsenal transfer target Maximilian Arnold has put a spanner into the works of Arsenal’s transfer ambitions, after his agent stated that the player wants to remain in Germany.

The attacking midfielder has impressed for Bundesliga side Wolfsburg this season, and had attracted interest from  Arsenal, Juventus and reigning Bundesliga Champions Bayern Munich over recent weeks.

The highly rated 19 year old has excelled in the Wolsburg first team, and has scored six goals for the Bundesliga club, he has also assisted three goals this term.

He has also forced himself into the full Germany side, and is most certainly in contention for a World Cup place.

Wolfsburg have him contracted until the summer of 2017,  and the club’s general manager Klaus Allofs has confirmed that the player does not have a release clause, and is happy at the club.

PSG ready to battle Barcelona for Chelsea’s David Luiz

0

The Ligue 1 champions are expected to part ways with another Brazilian centre-back, Alex, during the summer, and have identified his old Stamford Bridge team-mate Luiz as the perfect replacement.

Luiz was heavily linked with a move away from Chelsea last summer following Jose Mourinho’s return, especially as Barcelona have followed him for over a year.

Mourinho has utilised Gary Cahill and John Terry as his first-choice centre-back partnership this season, limiting Luiz’s opportunities in his favoured position.

The former Benfica man has, however, impressed in a midfield role, although PSG and Barcelona are both willing to give him the opportunity to play as a centre-back.

PSG are reportedly willing to offer more than Barcelona’s £20.5 valuation of Luiz – and that could give them the edge in the battle to land the defender.

Sir Tom Finney tribute.

0

Preston North End legend Sir Tom Finney has passed away at the age of 91.

Finney was the definition of a one club man, devoting his whole career to North End, making 433 appearances, scoring 187 goals in a superb career at Deepdale.

The stalwart was considered one of the greatest players of English footballing history, certainly one of the best of his generation, in a career that  spanned 14 years for the Lilywhites.

In many ways, he was the perfect player, with Finney able to play inside right, left or as a main striker, with the nation adoring such a humble and proud lad from Preston.

Finney enjoyed a superb England career, winning 76 caps for the three lions, scoring 30 goals for his country, putting him sixth in the all time England goal scoring list, joint with Alan Shearer, and former Bolton Wanderers great Nat Lofthouse.

Following Finney’s service in the forces, a period in which he turned down a move to Italian side Palermo to stay with his beloved North End, he went onto become a national treasure, Finney was named footballer of the year in 1953-54 and 1956-57 and was twice a runner-up in the league with North End.

He was also an FA Cup runner up, and played in two World Cup Finals, in 1954, and 1958.

Finney was also a qualified plumber, adding another tool to his box of talents.

Tributes have come in around the footballing world for Finney, with his former club Preston North End issuing a statement….

“Sir Tom was the greatest player to ever play for Preston North End and one of the all time greats for England.”

Preston are due to play Leyton Orient in a  League One fixture on Saturday afternoon, in what will be an emotional afternoon.

The statement added: “Preston North End have been informed of the extremely sad news of the passing of Sir Tom Finney.

“The thoughts of everyone at the club, and those connected with it, are with his family at this time.”

Speaking two years ago, ahead of his 90th birthday celebrations, former international team mate Bobby Charlton praised Finney’s superb career…

“I used to look at him and think, this is fantastic.

“Watching him, you knew full well that the full-backs had had it. He was just too good for them. Occasionally I had the pleasure to play with him and it was the greatest pleasure anyone could ever give me.

“I have so many happy memories of watching him play. His contribution to football is immeasurable.”

North End collaborated with Finney to produce a website based tribute to the one club man to mark his 90th birthday celebrations in 2012.

All of us here at sillyseason want to send our dearest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Sir Tom.

Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy is coming out of retirement

0

Suffering Man United fans might have thought they were in for a ‘Ruud’ awakening as Old Trafford legend Ruud van Nistelrooy hinted at a return to the game.

The Dutch international and fourth highest goalscorer in UEFA Champions League history has been spotted getting back to his training schedule and recently tweeted “As soon as I put the boots on again, feels like I never left. Glad to be back training again.”

But sadly for United fans (and David Moyes), It has been revealed that van Nistelrooy has been limbering up to join Xbox and EA SPORTS to launch “Play Like a Legend” across the UK, France, Germany and Spain to promote his status as an EA SPORTS FIFA Ultimate Team Legend player only on Xbox .

Reports in Holland had questioned whether the former PSV star could have been returning to help out the Eindhoven club, but it turns out the ex-Netherlands striker was just being a social media tease.

Arsene Wenger ‘met with Robin van Persie’s agent

0

Van Persie, who forced a move to Manchester United last year, enjoyed a superb opening season at Old Trafford – firing the club to the Premier League title.

But the Dutchman has reportedly become frustrated with life under new manager David Moyes, and is now angling for a switch back to Arsenal.

According to Sky Italia, Wenger met Van Persie’s representative in London late last month where it was made clear that Van Persie wants to leave United – and go back to the Gunners.

Wenger is believed to be now considering his next move, but with United planning an overhaul of their squad in the summer, the 30-year-old could be made available.

The Arsenal manager was coy this week when asked if he would consider re-signing Van Persie and it is thought that he has raised the prospect of their former captain returning with senior players, to see whether he would be welcomed back.

Arsenal have cash to spend on a new striker in the summer, with the club recently showing £140million worth of spare cash in their latest financial report.

Arsenal make Fiorentina star Juan Cuadrado their top summer transfer target

0

The 25-year-old has been one of the stars of the Serie A season so far, and after failing with a bid to sign him last month, the Gunners will push to bring him in over the summer.

Cuadrado, a fast and powerful right winger who can also play as a striker, is part-owned by Fiorentina and their Italian rivals Udinese.

And with the two clubs failing to agree on a package on who have him next season, Arsenal are planning to move in and offer £15million for him.

The money would split equally between the two clubs – and reports from Florence suggest that this deal would be attractive to all parties involved.

Arsene Wenger has been handed extensive scouting reports on Cuadrado from his chief Italian scout Tony Banfield – and the club are now looking into whether the Colombian will be eligible for a UK work permit if a deal is agreed.

Liverpool and Tottenham have also been tracking Cuadrado, who is famed for being able to attack and defend equally well on the flanks.

The former Independiente Medellin star has scored six goals this season, including one which helped Fiorentina to the Coppa Italia final this week.

Jose Mourinho: ‘Wenger Specialist In Failure’

0

In a press conference the Chelsea boss made another controversial and bold statement, by claiming Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is a ‘specialist at failure’

The managers claim is another war of words between two sides who are both competing for Premier League title this season.

Its not unknown that Wenger and Mourinho have rarely seen eye to eye in almost everything when it comes to managing philosophies and football in general, but this will surely hit Wenger hard with it being quite a vicious statement.

Mourinho made this comment after,on friday night, Wenger claimed the title’s was Chelsea’s to lose, adding that Mourinho’s claim that the Blues are outsiders represents a fear of failure.

The Chelsea manager – who won five major trophies during his first spell as Chelsea boss, including the Premier League twice, between 2004 and 2007 – drew attention to Arsenal’s current eight-year spell without a major trophy, saying: “He is a specialist in failure, I am not.

He went on to say, “If he is right and I have a fear of failure it is because I don’t fail many times. So maybe he is right?”

“The reality is he’s a specialist because eight years without a piece of silverware, that is failure. If I did that in Chelsea I would leave London and not come back.”

League leaders Chelsea hold a one-point advantage over second-placed Arsenal in the race for the title, with Manchester City also close, being only three points behind Chelsea

Is the Portuguese boss right or is this quite simply a ludicrous comment?

Fulham sack manager Meulensteen.

0

Fulham have announced that manager Rene Meulensteen has been sacked by the clubs Chairman Shahid Khan, after a poor run of results.

The sacking of the Dutch manager comes in the wake of very limited progress made at the club over recent weeks and months.

Meulensteen took over at Craven Cottage in November, following the sacking of compatriot Martin Jol.

The former Manchester Unitted boss took over as manager at the club, after coming in as an assistant manager at the West Londoners.

However, Meulensteen failed to build upon his side’s poor League position, and endured some poor results as manager of the side, with home defeats against the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton, and a horror FA Cup defeat against Sheffield United.

Meulensteen’s position was put under further doubt, after Alan Curbishley and Ray Wilkins were appointed as members of Meulensteen’s back room staff at the start of the year.

And it now appears the defeat against Liverpool was the final straw, with Khan moving swiftly to bring in a replacement.

Khan has announced the appointment of German manager Felix Magarth, who will take charge at the club immediately.

Magarth will now be tasked to turn round a side who are tipped for relegation.

Chairman Shahid Khan issued a statement.

“I am very happy to welcome Felix Magath to Fulham Football Club.  Felix is an accomplished manager with multiple honours in the Bundesliga and a hunger to replicate his success with Fulham in the Barclays Premier League. I’m especially impressed with the reputation Felix has for coming into clubs at difficult times, often late in the season, and lifting them to their potential and beyond. Felix knows that is precisely the task awaiting him at Fulham, and he made it abundantly clear that he wants and is ready for the opportunity.

“Our Club has shown promise in recent matches, but the fact is we have not won a league match since January 1. Given our form, we can no longer merely hope that our fortunes will finally turn. And with 12 matches remaining and at least four points separating us from safety, we certainly can no longer post empty results. Action was required.

“Alistair Mackintosh did a wonderful job during the January transfer window to improve our Club. This week, Alistair recommended Felix, with his history of producing results for Clubs with similar challenges as ours, as the new manager of Fulham. Alistair’s recommendation received my complete approval and Felix has my unequivocal support.”

Arsenal announces latest financial results

0

Turnover from football increased to £136.0 million (2012 – £106.1 million) with strong growth across each of the Club’s key areas of activity.

Match day income increased to £45.0 million (2012 – £37.8 million) with the Emirates Cup returning to the pre-season schedule and the UEFA Champions League qualifying round providing an additional home game.

Broadcasting revenue was boosted to £52.0 million (2012 – £40.1 million) principally as a result of the Premier League’s new contracts with Sky and BT.

Commercial and retail revenues rose to £38.4 million (2012 – £27.7 million) mainly due to the extended partnership arrangements with Emirates which were not yet in force for the comparative period.

The Group has confirmed a significant five year contract with PUMA, as the Club’s new kit partner, which will come into effect from the start of next financial year.

As a result of these changes in football turnover, partially offset by increased costs, (mainly relating to player wages), operating profits (before depreciation and player trading) from football increased to £22.2 million (2012 – £4.4 million).

Property revenues were significantly lower at £2.0 million (2012 – £32.3 million which included the sale of the Queensland Road market housing site) and operating profits from property amounted to £0.7 million (2012 – £1.9 million).

Profit on sale of player registrations amounted to £6.1 million which was significantly lower than the prior year comparative (2012 – £42.5 million).

Group loss before tax was £2.2 million (2012 – profit of £17.8 million).

The Group has no short-term debt and cash reserves, excluding the balances designated as debt service reserves, amounted £120.6 million (2012 – £99.7 million).

Overall result for the year expected to be fully compliant with all of the requirements of both the Premier League and UEFA financial regulatory regimes.

Julio Cesar joins Toronto.

0

Canadian MLS side Toronto FC have signed Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Julio Cesar, the club have announced.

The 34 year old veteran shot stopper has fell out of favour at Queens Park Rangers, and will be pleased that he will be able to play regular competative first team football ahead of the World Cup in the Summer.

Cesar arrived at Loftus Road from Serie A giants Inter Milan in the summer of 2012, and was one of the better players during Rangers’ relegation campaign of the 2012/13 Premier League season.

The keeper then was frozen out of the side for the whole of the first half of the season, with QPR boss Harry Redknapp opting to start former England international Robert Green, ahead of the Brazilian Cesar, as Rangers continued to press up the table to maintain a automatic promotion push.

Cesar has played just once for Redknapp’s side this season, as his side lost 4-0 away at Everton in an F.A Cup tie at Goodison Park.

However, the experienced shot stopper was keen to leave the club in January, with Italian sides Napoli and Cagliari chasing the keeper on a short term deal, he was also linked to a move back to his former club, Brazilian Serie A side Flamengo.

He will now look to have a sold few months of first team football, as he looks to add to his 77 International caps.

Cesar has a rich pedigree in the game, winning five Serie A titles at Inter Milan, plus three Coppa Italia titles, the 2010 UEFA Champions League and the 2010 Club World Cup.

The keeper will join Toronto until May, before he will join up with the Brazilian national team training camp.

The Canadian side have overhauled their squad in recent weeks, with Ryan Nelsen capturing Tottenham striker Jermaine Defoe, American international Michael Bradley was signed from AS Roma for around $11 million, Cesar will also join fellow Brazilians Gilberto and Jackson at the Canadian club.

The pain from Bayern defeat has made us stronger

0

Arsene Wenger is convinced Arsenal have learned from being knocked out of last season’s Champions League and can use the experience to return the favour to Bayern Munich.

Jupp Heynckes’ sensation Bayern brushed Arsenal aside in the first leg at the Emirates in the round of 16, but were beaten 2-0 in the return leg. Arsenal’s Champions League campaign was over due to Bayern’s three away goals.

But the north-London club have the chance to avenge last season’s heartache when they take on the German giants at home on February 19 before the second leg at the Allianz Arena on March 11.

And Wenger believes that his players now know how to take on the Champions League-, Bundesliga- and German Cup-winners.

‘We know them better and we will hopefully be in a better condition than last year,’ he said.

Gunners skipper Per Mertesacker echoed his manager’s belief that the north-London club can overcome Bayern, but claims the Treble-winners are an even better team under Heynckes’ successor Pep Guardiola.

‘It seems that they are even stronger this year in possession, defensively and how they cope with situations,’ Mertesacker told Sport magazine in an exclusive interview.

‘Their squad is absolutely massive, too, so they are not weaker than last year when we played them.

‘I think, with Guardiola in charge, they are even stronger. We have to respect them, but we are not frightened because we won the second leg against them last season and we played really well.

‘Now we have another chance – and an opportunity to beat the champions. We want to achieve something exceptional this season, so we have to beat the best. That is not only Manchester City and Chelsea. That is Bayern Munich in the Champions League.’

Guardiola’s men are cruising to another Bundesliga title as they top the table by a mammoth 13 points. Ominously for Arsenal fans, on their last outing, they thumped Hamburg 5-0 away, with
Mario Mandzukic bagging a hat-trick.

Former Spurs boss Ramos looks back on his reign at White Hart Lane and give us the truth

0

Juande Ramos is the only coach to have won anything at Tottenham in the last 15 years but he is remembered as the bumbling boss who was sacked after a year.

‘The stupid Spaniard who didn’t have a clue’ is how he feels the story was told. Now, as he prepares to bring his Dnipro side to White Hart Lane in the Europa League next week, he offers up another version of the events that ruined his reputation in England.

Spurs sacked Andre Villas-Boas, while Tim Sherwood has them just outside the Champions League places – but Ramos believes that is exactly where they will stay for as long as they sell established stars and replace them with young prospects.

‘Spurs sold Gareth Bale in the summer and with the €100million they have signed five or six players. They will see if any of those players take off and then maybe sell them on and reinvest: that’s the business plan,’ said Ramos at the Ukraine side’s winter training camp in Alicante.

‘It works well but you have to ask the question: what are you trying to achieve? Are you trying to win money or titles? The sporting side is the priority at Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea.

‘City sign Jesus Navas, Alvaro Negredo. They don’t look at the age of the player, they look at the performances. Spurs look at the age, thinking of a future sale.

‘I advised them to sign Luka Modric. He spent a couple of years developing and started performing well and they sold him.

‘Why aren’t Spurs going to win the league? Because they are always a small step below those three or four teams. Economically it works well but in sporting terms it needs a slight tuning. What are you chasing? Titles or economic success?’

And what if Spurs simply don’t have the budget to compete with the top clubs?

‘Then you don’t sack the manager for not always being in the top four,’ he said. ‘I didn’t have a problem with selling Berbatov, so long as someone came in to replace him.

‘The two strikers that I asked for were Samuel Eto’o and David Villa. But we were left with Darren Bent and Roman Pavlyuchenko.

‘We started the league and we couldn’t beat anyone; we couldn’t score a goal under a rainbow and in the eighth week I’m gone.’

In 2008 Pep Guardiola’s arrival at Barcelona had put Eto’o’s future in doubt and Villa was on his way out of cash-strapped Valencia — but Tottenham chose Pavlyuchenko.

‘He came,’ remembered Ramos. ‘Russian — he didn’t understand anything. He was here for six months and he hardly played. Damien Comolli signed him.’

All the goals we got that pre-season, he scored! Hell! It’s the worst thing that could have happened.

‘We won every game and he scores 11 or 12 goals and so the chairman thinks, “This guy Berbatov out, this guy Robbie Keane out!”

‘And then what happens? In December they spent £51m to rectify the mistakes. They say, “It’s the manager who doesn’t understand. He doesn’t know anything. The stupid Spaniard hasn’t got a clue. We’ll blame him”.

‘The guy that sold Keane and Berbatov wasn’t to blame and yet they had to spend £51m to sort it out!’

Sporting director Comolli was sacked as well. ‘With hindsight it would probably have been better not to agree to work with Comolli,’ added Ramos. ‘The only honourable thing Levy did was that he knew Comolli had made the signings and so he sacked him, too.

‘If he had blamed the signings on me, Comolli would have carried on.’

So has Villas-Boas been the victim of similar errors this season?

‘You take Bale out after last season when he won eight or 10 games on his own and you start to struggle, of course,’ agreed Ramos, but he is happier talking about his own dismissal. ‘It’s not a case of defending myself. These are quantifiable facts. I should have resigned sooner when I saw what was happening.’

Bent’s pre-season form was accompanied by Berbatov’s refusal to play. Ramos said: ‘As a coach, what do you do? If he doesn’t want to play then he’s not going to play well. It’s actually more honourable to say “I don’t want to play” than to put the shirt on and go out there and not try. I understand the player. He wants to go to United.’

Not understanding the players was one of the main criticisms made about his short reign. But he said: ‘My relationship with the players was excellent in the main but you know who it was bad with? David Bentley. His agent was close to Levy. And as Bentley didn’t play, because we had Aaron Lennon, he started to dish the dirt.

‘He was the one who started to undermine the relationship. He started with, “He doesn’t understand”. But four months before, I had understood. Then they said they were hungry. But four months before, they weren’t hungry.’

Bentley and his agent strongly refute these allegations and insist the player enjoyed working with the Spaniard.

But the players’ complaints about his crackdown on diet still riles Ramos. The five trophies won at Sevilla had been based in part on extreme fitness levels he tried to impose at Tottenham.

It was incredible,’ he said of the food made available to the squad.

‘It was like a wedding buffet. Cakes, pastries, sauces. Honestly, and I say this with no bitterness at all, there were players who were… well, fat. They were sedantary.

‘In a sportsman the physical condition has to be perfect because you live off your body. Your food is your fuel. If I eat a cake, I’m putting in diesel; an athlete needs to be putting in super fuel.

There was some resistance of course — a lad who is 22, 23 years old, with cash in his pocket thinking, “And this guy’s coming here telling me what to eat”, we could see that.

‘We trained out in Chigwell and there is a McDonald’s and we would see them there, eating hamburgers and drinking Coca-Cola.

‘I couldn’t go to their houses to see what they were eating but if they were not at their ideal weight then I could keep them out of the side. And we recovered in the league, we beat Arsenal for the first time in (nine) years and we won the Carling Cup, all in four months. Everyone’s as happy as hell.’

There was an unhappy ending a few months later but Ramos says he is not down on the culture of English football. He speaks about the ‘scandalously good touch’ of Tom Huddlestone and how good Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King would have been if not for their injuries.

And he disagrees that the average English footballer is less intelligent than his continental contemporary, saying: ‘It’s the flexibility they lack, not the intelligence. Changing things during a game is hard for them. All that kind of work is done with Spanish kids early on.’

But he doesn’t expect to be giving any footballing lessons when Dnipro meet Spurs. ‘One of their players is probably our budget for the entire season,’ he admitted.

‘Spurs are a team who are clearly superior to us. We’re light years away from them right now.’

And there is no lingering inside knowledge that can help him out. ‘Knowing about the opposition is not the same as being able to stop them,’ he said. ‘I can tell them how quick Lennon is and how he can take them on the outside. But then they can go out on to the pitch knowing that and, voom-voom, he’s gone. What are you going to do? Throw a rope around him?’

Ramos is perhaps, above all, an unlucky coach. When he won the League Cup with Spurs it was his sixth trophy in less than two years. He beat a club record for consecutive wins at Real
Madrid only to be sacked by a new president.

What kind of welcome does he expect at White Hart Lane in March? ‘The best case scenario is some applause and a welcome back, I suppose,’ he said. ‘The memory should be a good one. I was the coach the last time they won a trophy after all.’
