Agger off-off-off?

0

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger could be on his way to join up with former-Red Rafael Benitez in Italy, as Napoli declare their interest in the centre-back.

Benitez, who used to be the manager at Anfield, is desperate to strengthen his side’s back-line, and after failing in his quest for Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen, he is now turning his attentions to Agger.

It has been suggested that Brendan Rodgers will accept an offer for the Danish international, but only if midfielder Gokhan Inler is thrown in as part of the deal as well.

Despite being a regular starter for Benitez, reports in Italy are claiming that they would offer the 29-year-old as part of the deal.

The Reds are in search for a new holding-midfielder after it was confirmed that Lucas Leiva would be out for up to two months.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard donates £96,000 to Hillsborough fund

0

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has made a personal donation of £96,000 to the Hillsborough Family Support Group.

The England midfielder’s cousin Jon-Paul Gilhooley was the youngest of the 96 supporters to die in the 1989 tragedy.

“I think the timing’s right and having spoken to the club I’ve decided to do it now,” Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo ahead of the 222nd Merseyside derby at Anfield.

“It had been in the media a lot so I didn’t think it was needed where I had to step in and keep it on everyone’s lips and in everyone’s minds.

“But now it’s gone a little bit quiet over the last couple of weeks, I think the timing’s really good to get it back out there – sending another message out about how much we really want this justice.”

HFSGroup chairman Margaret Aspinall said Gerrard’s donation would make a huge difference.

“It’s a wonderful gesture by Steven and we cannot thank him enough,” she said.

“It’s a lot of money he has donated and it will help all the families a great deal with our work.

“It’s another sign of how good the people of Merseyside are – all they have done for us and continue to do.

“The club itself has been a great help to the Hillsborough Family Support Group and we’ve had a lot of support from the players as well.

“This money will help with the running costs of our office and the travel expenses of the meetings and talks we attend up and down the country.”

David Moyes admits signing Juan Mata will not solve all of United’s problems

0

David Moyes has conceded Manchester United’s record £37.1million capture of Juan Mata will not be the answer to all of their problems.

Despite his delight at securing Mata from Chelsea for a club record fee, Moyes admitted it will take more than one big-name signing to rid United of their inconsistent form and make the side great again.

Moyes remains in the hunt for a left-back and at least one central midfielder, after conceding he has a “big job” on his hands to turn United’s turbulent season around and secure a top-four finish.

I’ve got a big job to do here and I think a couple of new signings isn’t all that’s needed,” said Moyes.

“I think there’s a bigger job to be done, but you have to start somewhere.

“If you asked me what I needed most, I would have said a central midfielder, I could do with a left-back, but sometimes you don’t always get the pieces of the jigsaw at the time.

“This is what I’ve been trying to allude to. I wasn’t sure those pieces of the jigsaw would fall for us in this window.

“I hoped something would come up in this window that we wanted, and thankfully we got it.

Moyes admitted United’s agonising Capital One Cup semi-final exit to Sunderland on penalties had been a one of the lowest points of his debut season at Old Trafford.

But the United boss said Mata’s arrival had gone some way to lifting that personal gloom.

“Football is littered with disappointments,” said the United boss.

“Through your career you’ll always look back and see disappointments. The Sunderland night will always be a big disappointment to me.

“But in the back of my mind, even before the Sunderland game, I knew that we probably had the chance of making a good signing in Juan.”

Southampton could fine Dani Osvaldo £240,000 if he doesn’t leave the club

0

Dani Osvaldo faces a fine of up to £240,000 – six weeks’ wages – if he is still at Southampton after Friday’s transfer deadline.

The Saints have not yet docked any pay from their record signing and are keeping all options open, meaning they could even terminate his contract.

Valencia, Inter Milan and West Ham are chasing the £15million striker suspended by his club for butting and punching team-mate Jose Fonte last week.

That suspension was pending a full investigation, the result of which could become known within days.

Southampton could hit Osvaldo with a two-week penalty, the normal amount levied for misconduct. But in extreme cases, clubs can impose a six-week fine.

Arsene Wenger to extend his stint at Arsenal into a third decade worth £24million

0

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis confirmed on Monday that manager Arsene Wenger will sign a three-year contract worth £24million and get the go-ahead to invest heavily in the transfer market.

Frenchman Wenger has also been told to try to land German wonderkid Julian Draxler from Schalke this week. Gazidis confirmed Wenger is staying as he unveiled the club’s £150million partnership with kit manufacturers Puma.

That will be among a raft of commercial deals to support 64-year-old Wenger’s ambition. Gazidis said: ‘One of our long-term goals has been to increase commercial revenues so that we can invest in the squad. This is an important progression for our steps on the pitch and the money will be available from the summer for the manager to invest.’

He added: ‘Arsene will be extending with us and at the right time we will make that announcement. We are relaxed about it. We have always supported Arsene and he has been committed to the club.’

The five-year deal with Puma ends Arsenal’s 20-year association with Nike and is worth £30m per year.

Sportsmail revealed earlier this month that the Gunners are trying to capture attacking midfielder Draxler from Schalke ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline, a deal that will cost in excess of £30m.

It is clear after years of careful spending at the Emirates that the financial straitjacket has been removed.

The club record £42m deal to buy Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid was a clear indication that the club are ready to compete for the world’s top players and their move for 20-year-old Draxler underlines that point.

Meanwhile, Arsenal, who travel to Southampton in the Barclays Premier League tonight, have requested their forthcoming FA Cup fifth-round clash against Liverpool be played on Saturday, February 15.

The league leaders are facing the daunting task of four games in 12 days. A week on Saturday they take on Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool at Anfield, then host Manchester United four days later.

They want their FA Cup clash against Liverpool to be scheduled for the next Saturday to ensure ample recovery time between that game and a Champions League tie against Bayern Munich on the following Wednesday.

The nightmare scenario would be for the game against Liverpool to take place on Sunday. Broadcasters ITV and BT Sport were yesterday discussing plans for the fifth-round weekend.

Wenger says the football authorities in England are not doing enough to assist club’s involved in European competition. He said: ‘Are we doing enough to help English teams in the Champions League?

‘Let’s turn it around. You cannot do less — because they do nothing to help. In the other leagues they do help teams.

‘I’ve already suggested in UEFA meetings to make sure that in Champions League competitions the teams have the same amount of rest.

‘In some championships, for example in Portugal, they cancel the games sometimes before the Champions League matches.

‘Maybe it would be better that all of the teams in the competition have exactly the same amount of rest.

‘It’s difficult to say how much difference it makes. But, for example, if you have a player with a bad bruise on a muscle and he has only three days before the next game, one day more the player could play, one day less the player cannot play.

‘I don’t want to blame anybody, it’s just the way the fixtures are sold. It is the television today who decide. I cannot even blame the Premier League because it’s the television who have the last word.

‘If they say they want Arsenal v Liverpool on Sunday, it will be on Sunday. They pay the clubs lots of money, of course.

‘I can understand the television, but the question you can ask is the way it is sold. You could take £50m less and keep command.’

Newcastle agree fee for Cabaye.

0

Newcastle United have agreed a fee with Paris Saint Germain foe central midfielder Yohan Cabaye.

The French International looks set for a return to his homeland, with Paris Saint Germain poised to capture the midfielder, who signed for Newcastle from Ligue 1 club Lille in the summer of 2011.

Cabaye will fly to Paris to undergo a medical ahead of a lucrative £24 million move, after agreeing a fee with Newcastle.

He recently stated his desire to play in the Champions League, and moving to the French Champions will of course satisfy Cabaye’s long term desire to play in Europe’s elite competition.

Alan Pardew stated earlier in the day that Cabaye would probably leave, and accepted that he could not guarantee were Cabaye’s long term future would lie.

Oil rich AS Monaco, and Premier League sides Arsenal and Manchester United both had bids rejected for the the Frenchman during the two previous windows, but it appears, Paris is Cabaye’s preffered destination, ahead of a lucrative mood.

He refused to play for the Magpies, after handing in a transfer request, in order to attempt to sort out a move to Arsenal, but stated in September that he was happy in the North East.

However, Cabaye has continued to be linked with a move away from Newcastle before the transfer deadline on 31 January.

Both sides have agreed a deal and compensation for the playmaker, and a move looks to be all but sealed, with Cabaye set to earn a lucrative contract with the Parisians.

Wenger Hits Back

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has rejected comments made by rival Jose Mourinho that his side have an advantage in the title race due to their extended recovery time between matches. The Chelsea boss had hit out at before his side’s 1-0 win at home vs Stoke on Sunday about the significant amount of time Arsenal had between their FA Cup fixture at home to Coventry and their next Premier League fixture tomorrow away at Southampton. Chelsea play West Ham at home on Wednesday, but even with what looks like an extra day Arsenal have still had 24 hours extra to prepare.

“It’s simple,” said Wenger, “if you look at the fixtures and analyse you can see that Arsenal are behind all of the other teams. These are no more than mind games. An opinion of his, and I don’t live with opinions, I live with facts.”

One man suffering as a result of picking up an injury in that 4-0 FA Cup win is Jack Wilshere, who will miss the clash at Southampton on Tuesday.

“We have a doubt about Jack Wilshere,” said Wenger, “who picked up an ankle problem in the Coventry game, but apart from that our players are fit and ready to go.”

Pardew not confident of keeping Cabaye.

0

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has stated his is unsure and “not confident” that the club can keep hold of midfielder Yohan Cabaye.

French Ligue 1 Champions Paris Saint Germain had a submitte offer rejected by the Magpies last week, but it appears they will match Newcastle’s valuation of £23 million.

Pardew stated in his pre match interview ahead of Tuesday’s game against Norwich City….

‘We know that we’ve got a club interested in Cabaye who are very wealthy and powerful.

We’re conscious of that, but will be doing our best to protect Newcastle United.

‘Am I confident (of keeping Cabaye)? No. I don’t think any team not in a Champions League position, or fighting for a Champions League position, would be different.’

The oil rich French side have had a keen interest in Cabaye for a long time, and Manager Laurent Blanc wants to bring Cabaye to the French capital, to strengthen an already formidable sqad.

Backed by wealthy investors, a huge bid for the midfielder maybe to good to turn down.

Cabaye scored twice in last Saturday’s 3-1 win away at Upton Park, spearheading his side to an impressive victory, and a move to a bigger club may just be around the corner.

Howevera replacement would have to be found insists Pardew, before Cabaye can head back to France.

We would need to bring someone in, for sure,’ he said.

‘But we’re going to need some time to do that. We’ve informed the club that are interested and the agents that we’re very conscious of that.’

Cabaye has recently attracted interest from the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United, as well as rich French principality club AS Monaco.

Newcastle face losing another big name for a hefty fee, in the space of three years, as Andrew Carroll joined Liverpool for £35 million on Deadline day in 2011, with Pardew mulling over weather to stick or twist, in yet another enticing deal.

Blues eye up Courtois replacement

0

Following the agreement that Chelsea may get striker Diego Costa in exchange for Thibaut Courtois staying, The Blues will be eyeing up a potential replacement keeper. According to Sports Direct News, the man who Chelsea will chase is Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

Chelsea bought Courtois back in 2011 for around £5m and was loaned out to Spanish side, Atletico Madrid to gain experience. However, since then the Belgian has impressed coach Diego Simeone and after 3 consecutive seasons in La Liga and a Copa del Rey title, there is a chance Courtois will stay put.

This season, Courtois has only conceeded 14 goals from 21 league games and has helped his side to second spot, ahead of city rivals Real Madrid.

Begovic has impressed in the last 2 seasons, helping Stoke to avoid relegation and remains one of the most consistent keepers in the Premier League. And, with 6 clean sheets and even a goal to his name, it is no wonder Mourinho will be keen to sign the Bosnian, who will make appearances at this year’s World Cup in Brazil.

Mark Lawrenson predictions for midweek

BBC Pundit picks Manchester City to beat Tottenham

After the Premier League took a backseat for the weekend’s FA Cup Fourth Round, it is now back to centre stage as there is a full set of fixtures taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday night.

Here are Mark Lawrenson’s predictions for the next set of fixture.

Tuesday

Manchester United 2-0 Cardiff City

“But Cardiff have been poor on the road all season and, no matter how many of their new faces feature against United, it is a big ask for them to improve that on Tuesday.”

Norwich City 1-1 Newcastle United

“I am backing him to pick up a point here, though, so the next so-called crisis will have to wait.”

Southampton 1-1 Arsenal

“Southampton have been on a difficult run of results too, but I would not be surprised to see them kick on a bit now and finish the season strongly.”

Swansea City 2-0 Fulham

“Fulham were quite good defensively in their last Premier League game, at Arsenal, but I just do not see them scoring goals on the road.”

Crystal Palace 2-0 Hull City

“This one will be tight, but I think Palace will pick up another three points.”

Liverpool 2-1 Everton

“It will not be easy to keep Everton quiet, though. Scoring is not Liverpool’s problem, but they have looked vulnerable defensively recently.”

Wednesday

Aston Villa 2-0 West Bromwich Albion

“This is another tough test for Mel, and I think Villa will get things right at home this time.”

Chelsea 2-0 West Ham United

“I look at this game and only see a routine Chelsea victory.”

Sunderland 1-1 Stoke City

“I am not sure they will get it on Wednesday, though. Stoke would take a draw now but it is not really much good for Sunderland.”

Tottenham Hotspur 0-2 Manchester City

“Spurs will cause them some problems but I’d have to go for a City win at White Hart Lane.”

What are your thoughts on these predictions?

Juan Mata looking forward to Wayne Rooney link-up

0

Manchester United’s new January signing Juan Mata has revealed that he cannot wait to link-up with striker Wayne Rooney, who was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the Summer.

This weekend was a crucial one for David Moyes and United as they wrapped up the signing of Mata for £37.1million and they also began contract talks with Rooney which could see him retire at Old Trafford, which will fend off interest from Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea.

Speaking in his first interview as a United player, Mata admitted that the thought of playing alongside Rooney excites him.

“For me he’s one of the best players in the history of this country. He’s an unbelievable player.”

“He’s a striker who can score, assist and come into midfield to take the ball,” added Mata of Rooney.

“I will try to connect with him as much as possible and find the gaps in rival defences. I think that’s my best style of play, to get into positions where I can assist the strikers.”

I want to be like Messi and Ronaldo, claims Hazard

0

Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard has revealed that he intends to become one of the world’s best footballers, much like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Belgium international has scored nine goals so far this season for Jose Mourinho’s men and has developed a sensational partnership with Brazilian, Oscar, so much so, it lead the club to selling Player of the Year Juan Mata to Manchester United.

The 23-year-old has revealed in an interview that he believes he has the same attributes as the world’s best, and he wants to awards to go with it.

“Of course I want to be the best in the world,” he told Het Laatste Nieuws. “Previously I was more worried about the game itself: football was just a game for me, I wanted to amuse myself and didn’t bother what the people thought about me.

“But since I’m here at Chelsea, I’ve become more aware of my qualities, I guess. Before I knew I was a good player, but not one of the better players in the world.

“Now I realise that I can compete with Messi and Ronaldo in the near future, if I put in some more effort. I don’t know if I will ever reach their level. It’ll be hard, they have incredible stats, but I accept the challenge.”

“I agree, I’ve matured,” Hazard added. “On the pitch, I haven’t changed much. I’m still the same, but I realised that, if I want to be among the best in the world, I’ll have to perform consistently, game in, game out.

“I’m now important for the team, I give good passes, I score more goals and Chelsea is performing well.

“Everyone expects more from me. I hear it every day. Maybe I need these little comments, too. When a manager always says ‘Eden, you’re doing great’, there is a threat that you can snooze.

“As a professional, you have to challenge yourself every day. Put yourself in front of a mirror. The manager is close to his players, but when he has something to say, he does to your face, in a friendly way. And he knows how to challenge his players.

Today was the official meeting to annouce the £150million kit deal with sportswear giants Puma to which the Arsenal chief confirmed the funds will be made available to Arsene in the summer as they hope to look to strengthen the squad, but be sure if Mr Wenger really wanted to, Gazidis could juggling things round for a last minute shopping spree in the final few days left of this winter transfer window.
