Newcastle make £8million bid for Lyon’s Clement Grenier

0

Newcastle have this morning made a bid of £8million for Lyon’s Clement Grenier.

But the club’s offer is set to be rejected by the French side as it falls around £5million short of the Ligue 1 side’s valuation.

The 23-year-old French midfielder has scored five goals in 24 appearances this season – and has three caps for France.

And he could be the ideal replacement for the Toon as they prepare for the departure of Yohan Cabaye.

Cabaye is expected to sign a three-and-a-half year deal at Paris Saint-Germain in a deal thought to be worth £23million to Newcastle.

Luuk de Jong is also expected to join Alan Pardew’s squad today from Borussia Moenchengladbach when he completes a medical later today.

Arsene Wenger and Mauricio Pochettino full of praise for Saints

0

Premier League leaders Arsenal were held to a 2-2 draw in last night’s encounter with Southampton, but after ending the game with 10-men, it could have been much worse for Arsene Wenger’s men.

A sloppy first-half, which was even labelled by some as the worst 45-minutes they’ve ever seen under Wenger, meant The Saints lead at half-time 1-0 thanks to a Jose Fonte header, but with just seven minutes gone in the second-half, it was 2-1 Arsenal after Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla turned the game on it’s head.

However, Arsenal’s lead lasted just two minutes as Saints captain Adam Lallana made it 2-2, and that is how it remained until full-time, despite Mathieu Flamini seeing red for a two-footed challenge.

After the game, both Mauricio Pochettino and Arsene Wenger were full of praise for Southampton after they managed to hold the league leaders.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: “We played in second gear and Southampton in fourth. They played at a higher pace than us, decided to stop us from playing and did it very well.

“You want the three points in every game but it is a difficult place Southampton. When you look at the overall record it can happen sometimes away from home you take only one point.

“Flamini got the ball. At some stage we have all the feet off the ground – when you want to run you need to put the feet off the ground.

“If you say that every time a guy makes the two-footed tackle it is a red card he deserved a red card. If you say was it a violent tackle I would say no as he played the ball. I don’t know, the referee made the decision, we have to cope with it.”

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino: “I thought the team was outstanding. We were sensational in the first half and did really well.

“It was total football. In the second half we didn’t start so well and conceded two quick goals.

“I would highlight fact we were able to get back into it – we showed amazing character and we deserved to win in the end.”

Brendan Rodgers hopeful of ‘major signings’

0

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is hopeful that his side can make a major signing before Friday’s deadline, despite seeing his team thrash fierce-rivals Everton 4-0 at Anfield last night.

Goals from Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez and a brace from Daniel Sturridge gave Rodgers’ side all three points, but after the game, he revealed that his plans are to sign people in order to strengthen their title push.

Rodgers revealed yesterday that he was frustrated about the lack of activity, but he admits to feeling hopeful that something can be arranged before the window slams shut.

“We are working together and hopefully we can have a major signing in before the window closes,” said Rodgers

“The people behind the scenes are working very, very hard and we are not always going to get the players we want for a number of reasons. The people here are very important to what we are trying to do.

“If we can get someone in before the window closes we can, then set up for the remaining games this season.”

Mata makes debut in comfortable home win

0

So with Mata making his eagely awaited debut and the return from injury for both Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney, it was Mata and the Dutchman Van Persie who Moyes opted to start up front with this evening with Rooney having to make do with a place on the bench following his return from injury. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer making his return to Old trafford where he became a true legend in his playing days scoring a dramtic winner in the 1999 Champions League final for United. The Nowegian had hoped to take something away from this tie in a desperate bid to try and save the Bluebirds from relegation this season. Solskjaer recieved a warm welcome back to where he spent his playing days as a prolific striker but was ultimately denied a fairytale return when only after six mintues into the game Van persie pounced to put United ahead at the second attempt, Mata knocked the ball wide to the left from deep which saw Ashley Young cross the ball into the box only for Valencia to head onto the bar from close in allowing Van persie to follow up and convert a close range header following a save from Cardiff’s goalkeeper David Marshall to deny the striker the first time round. Juan Mata wearing the number eight shirt was given the free role which he prefers playing a little behind Van Persie, allowing him to link up play and try and feed the United front man, a role which Mata played some of his best football for Chelsea over the last couple of seasons. But as the teams approached half time the original spark in beginning of the first half was fading as Cardiff began to come into the game more and more without actually threatening Manchester United goal too much. Mata almost gave Young the chance to double the lead before the interval with teasing deep cross which the winger failed by inches to connect with, moments before Van Persie shot just wide from a tight angel. Juan Mata was also responsible for another chance that went begging in the first 45minutes when sending a free kick into Cardiffs danger zone only for Johnny Evans to head narrowly wide.

The teams came out from the half time interval with Cardiff City looking dangerous and threatening on the counter attack with Craig Noone looking to take the game to the hosts and Mark Hudson forcing De Gea in the United goal to make a save from a Cardiff corner, then from out of the blue just prior to the hour mark in the game Ashely Young let fire with a low drive from just outside the box to make it 2-0 and gave United a comfortable remaining 30minutes of the game to see out. David Moyes’ team also welcomed back Wayne Rooney tonight who in the 63rd minute replaced Van Persie up front making his first appearance for United since New Years day following a groin injury. Rooney looked lively, and Moyes, who has been without either of his original strikers for much of this year so far must have been encouraged with signs of things to come, as Rooney who like Van Persie prior to being replaced, linked up well with Mata and the England striker almost added to the score sheet tonight with an attempt at a cheeky lob over Bluebird Keeper David Marshall. The Cardiff shot stopper did well to keep the game at 2-0 and came to Cardiffs defence a few times tonight, none more so than when he was called upon to tip a shot onto the post from United winger Valencia following a United attack.

Juan Matas debut following his £37.1 million transfer came to an end with 6minutes remaining when David Moyes replaced the playmaker with Janusaj, Mata left the field to a standing ovation by the home crowd, whos debut could be a turning point in David Moyes first season in charge. If Juan Mata settles in as quickly as he appears he will, and with both strikers Rooney and R.V.P returning to fitness David Moyes will be looking to make up lost ground on a top four spot and try and secure Champions League football next season.

Moyes Wants More From Players!

0

Manchester United Manager David Moyes has challenged his players to prove their critics wrong.

Moyes started his Old Trafford rebuilding job by smashing United’s transfer record to bring Juan Mata to the club from Chelsea.

That £37.1million outlay is destined to be the last bit of significant business Moyes does in the current transfer window unless the Scot is given some unexpected encouragement with any of his other targets.

It means he must now trust his present squad to haul themselves out of the hole they have dug for themselves with so many tepid performances this term, particularly on home soil.

And, in his programme notes ahead of Tuesday’s encounter with Cardiff, Moyes has made it perfectly clear what should be driving United on.

“I do believe now that we are playing for the Manchester United jersey and for pride in where we are,” Moyes told United Review.

“There is still a long way to go this season and by the end of it we have to have shown we are much better than many people are making us out to be.

“On the training ground and in the dressing room I see determined and committed players who are desperate to put things right.”

Moyes revealed he had been made aware when he succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson last summer changes would be required, even if the scale of the task has caught many observers by surprise given United romped to the Premier League title by 11 points last term.

Moyes added: “When I joined the club, I joined knowing I was taking over a great squad who had just finished the season as champions, but I was also made very much aware that there would have to be changes made.

“Namely… a long-term plan and also looking within our own acedemy to introduce young players to the first team as often as we feel they warrant selection.”

Essien Excited With Milan Move

0

Michael Essien is chomping at the bit to start the next stage of his career after completing his move to AC Milan from Chelsea on Monday.

The 31-year-old Ghana International underwent a medical at Milan before putting pen to paper on a contract that ties him to the Italian giants until June 30, 2015

Essien will now link up with his new team-mates on Tuesday and he admits he is itching to begin life with the seven-time European Champions.

He tweeted: “I have just signed my contract with one of the best clubs in the world. Im very happy and looking forward to winning with the team#ForzaMilan.”

“I cannot wait to join the team in training and be a part of Milan’s family,” he added on Milan Channel.

Essien joins a Milan side who have fallen on hard times of late with their only major trophy success in the last six years being the 2010/11 Serie A title.

This season they are struggling down in ninth place in the Serie A standings, 28 points behind league leaders Juventus, while they were also knocked out of Coppa Italia quarter-finals at home by Udinese last week.

Nevertheless, Essien is excited to be joining such a “great club” and has pledged to give new Rossoneri coach Clarence Seedorf his all.

“I am very happy to have spoken to Seedorf, he is a nice person,” he said. “It’s a pleasure to have heard what Seedorf had to say about me.

“I always give my best and battle for the team from the first minute until the last.

“I hope to achieve something important and give my best for Milan.”

Liverpool 4 – 0 Everton Manager reactions

0

Steven Gerrard headed in Luis Suarez’s corner to put the hosts ahead, before two Sturridge goals in three minutes.

First he collected Philippe Coutinho’s through ball and shot past Tim Howard, and netted again with a lofted finish after Kolo Toure’s long pass.

Suarez added a fourth following Phil Jagielka’s error but Sturridge then fired a spot-kick over the crossbar.

Daniel Sturridge appeared to be unhappy with Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers for taking him off after he had scored twice, and the England striker said: “I apologise if anyone was offended. “I felt I had let myself and the fans down by missing the penalty. I didn’t react to the manager, I was just disappointed with how I missed the penalty. “It’s not about myself, it’s about all the boys.”
————————————————————————————————————————
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard: “Against Aston Villa we let the fans down and let ourselves down, it was our worst performance of the season. But every player was superb today.”

On his decision to let Daniel Sturridge take the penalty, which would have seen the striker complete his hat-trick if he had scored, Gerrard added: “I’ve scored a hat-trick against Everton and know what that feels like and I wanted Daniel to feel it. It was not to be, but it is my responsibility.

“We have two world-class forwards and Daniel was magnificent. He destroyed them in the first half.”
————————————————————————————————————————-
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers: “It was a gamble to go with two strikers but that’s the reason we took the risk. We got four goals and could’ve had six or seven. It was a brilliant demonstration of how to play under pressure.”

On Daniel Sturridge’s angry reaction to being substituted, Rodgers added: “In fairness to Daniel, he was frustrated after not scoring the penalty. We are very much a team and if anyone is unhappy we say to just keep it to yourself and speak to me the next day, but there is no problem with Daniel. He was brilliant tonight.”
————————————————————————————————————————-
Everton manager Roberto Martinez: “It does not look good for Romelu Lukaku, he picked up a bad injury. It was that type of night when everything went against us.

“For different reasons we could not maintain the normal intensity, we became exposed and were naive. We gave the ball away far too easily.

“We wanted to perform so well for the fans and we have been terrific all season. We need to bounce back straight away and perform in the manner we did before today.”

Moyes plans bid for Kroos

0

David Moyes and Manchester United are ready to bid £25 million for Germany and Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos. Moyes travelled to Germany last Friday to watch Kroos in action for Bayern, and is now ready to make an officical bid. They are ready to talk contracts with Kroos, who is currently only on half the wage that United star Wayne Rooney is on at Old Trafford, at £150,000 per week, and compared with the £300,000 that United are ready to offer Rooney to stay, this figure seems significantly small. Kroos is ready to listen to offers from United since his wage is also significantly lower than other stars at Bayern Munich, like Bastian Schweinsteiger and Philip Lahm.

Even after the signing of Juan Mata last week, it is clear that United’s midfield still needs improvement, and Moyes will be encouraged to make a move for the playmaker with such little wage demands. United need to act fast though, with the transfer window shutting in a matter of days.

Tim Sherwood rules out January activity

0

Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has revealed that there are no plans on signing anyone during the January transfer window.

Spurs had a very busy Summer spending the money they gained after selling Gareth Bale to Real Madrid, but Sherwood, who wasn’t even in charge during that period, has revealed that it would take something dramatic for a transfer to happen this month.

With just a week left in the transfer market, Sherwood has refused to rule out loan-moves for players who are currently on the fringes of the first-team.

Lewis Holtby and Etienne Capoue have both been linked with moves away, and Sherwood believes deals could happen for them.

“We’re not actually looking for anything,” said Sherwood. “Unless something drastic happens between now and the end of the window then we won’t be bringing anyone in.

“I am happy with the squad we have here. It is a big squad after we brought seven new players in last summer and I trust this group of players to take us where we want to be.

“But it is possible that there may be players leaving, although if no one was to go then I would be delighted.”

When questioned about potential outgoings, Sherwood said: “I like Lewis. He is a good lad and one of the best trainers at the club.

“But I understand, as I do with all players, that they want to play and if they are not getting a lot of opportunities then sometimes you have to be fair to the player. But first and foremost my job is to do what’s right for this football club.

“As for Capoue, it the same as Lewis. He’s a good lad, good trainer and has never given me a minute’s prohblem

“However, as I said, you have to be fair to the players. We have a lot of players in that midfield area and if an opportnity does arise, and it’s right for the football cliub, then we will let players move on.”

Jose Mourinho plays down title chances

0

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has played down his side’s chances of winning the Premier League title this season, but he insists that he is happy with the progress his team is making.

The Blues boss made his return to English football this Summer after a few years away with Inter Milan and then Real Madrid, and since his return to Stamford Bridge, he has made several changes to the side Rafael Benitez left behind.

Several new faces in and a couple of out-ones out have given Chelsea a new image and despite Mourinho being happy with the progress, he still doubts his side’s ability to go all the way and win the title.

When asked about their chances of winning it, Mourinho replied with: “I don’t think so. I think we have to drink champagne because we are improving. I think we are improving a lot. The team and the players, so the perspectives of champagne in the future are good. I think we are going in a good direction.

“We are playing well. I think we are playing well. I think the game against Stoke was a good 1-0. Quality. Individually, very good performances. Collectively, very good. The quality of the game was good.

“Defending well is also an art, and they defended very well. So I think the team is playing well.

“You never know what is going to happen in the next match, but the reality is that the results are arriving as a consequence of the team playing very good football.”

Leighton Baines reveals why he signed contract at Everton

0

Everton defender Leighton Baines has revealed the reasons behind his decision to sign a new contract at Goodison Park, instead of joining David Moyes at Manchester United.

The English left-back has been a United target for the last three seasons, but after rejecting the move whilst Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge, people thought a move may be more likely once Moyes left The Toffees for United in the Summer.

However, EVerton rejected all bids made from United and Baines remained a Toffee, and now he has put all speculation about his future to bed by signing a new contract at Goodison Park.

“I am delighted to have agreed the new deal,” he told the club website. “I am very happy at Everton and always have been. It’s a fantastic football club and I am excited about what we can achieve here in the next few years.

“I have a great relationship with the chairman and also the manager, the staff, the rest of the lads and, of course, the supporters. I’ve loved every minute of being here since I first joined in 2007 and I couldn’t be happier.

“I’ve never been one to relish the limelight so I suppose I’m glad that the speculation will go away now.”

“There is a really confident buzz about the place just now and that’s being reflected in our performances.

“We’re well-placed in the Premier League, we’re in the fifth round of the FA Cup and although we’ve got a few injuries, we feel as though we are ready for every challenge.

“The ambition is to bring some success to the club. That’s what all the lads want and that’s what we’re all working together for.

“The Everton fans deserve success and I am just happy to be in the privileged position of being able to try and provide some for them.”

Rodgers chases £22m Chelsea and Manchester United Target

0

The Telegraph’s Mark Ogden reported couple of days back that Manchester United are ready to battle Chelsea for the signing of this highly rated young left-back, who graduated from the Saint’s youth academy.

The Mirror earlier reported that Manchester United had made a £22.5 million offer for Southampton prodigy, while Chelsea are also plotting to make a counter-bid, with transfer value could rise up to £30m.

Having already signed Mata and almost securing a long-term contract for Wayne Rooney, United manager David Moyes has shifted his attention to completing a deal for Shaw.

Meanwhile, Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino has claimed that the youngster won’t be sold in the January transfer window or in the summer. “At this moment, Southampton have no interest in selling Luke Shaw,” Pochettino said as quoted by Sky Sports.

“Not in the summer, either. Southampton have got a lot of expectation put in Luke’s future and we have no intention of selling him.

“What is clear is that Southampton believe in these players, want these players, and we have no intention of selling them.”

Now, according to The Daily Mail, Liverpool are also interested in the youngster and have asked Southampton to keep them informed.

Liverpool’s first choice left-back Jose Enrique is out injured and missed a major part of the season, while his deputy Aly Cissokho, who joined on loan, has cut a sorrow figure to a huge extent. The Reds need a solid left-back in January or in summer and therefore could try their luck for young Shaw.

200 fans banned from Newcastle v Sunderland derby

0

A total of 123 Newcastle fans are subject to football banning orders, and will not be allowed to attend the Tyne-Wear game.

Another 52 Black Cats’ supporters are also banned.

Police aim to avoid a repeat of last season’s game on Tyneside, when scores of people rioted after Sunderland’s 3-0 win over their arch-rivals.

To help achieve this, Sunderland supporters will be held back in the stadium for a short time after the final whistle.

Supporters will have access to full catering facilities at the ground, and after full-time, they will be able to wait in the bar areas, where they will have access to refreshments and toilets.

They will then be asked to wait until the immediate area outside the ground is clear of Newcastle fans before making their way to the transport.

Operations commander, Chief Superintendent Steve Neill, said: “The Tyne-Wear derby is a fantastic event that football fans across the region and country look forward to, and we’re working with clubs, local authorities and fans to make sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable day.

“We’re asking Sunderland supporters to work with us, as they did last season, and stay back for a short period of time after the game.

“This allows time to clear the immediate area outside for us to escort them from the stadium and to their transport.

“We’ve carried out hold-backs of supporters in the past at matches both at St James’s Park and the Stadium of Light, and they’ve worked well. Fans fully understand why we do it, and are co-operative with officers and stewards.

“The facilities will be open, so it’s as comfortable as possible for the waiting Sunderland fans, and we’ll bring supporters down as swiftly as possible.”

Sunderland fans are also being encouraged to use free coaches provided by the club.

These will leave the Stadium of Light at 10.30am.

Turnstiles at St James’s Park will open at 11am for the arrival of the first set of coaches from the Stadium of Light, and then 11.15am generally, with kick-off at 12.45pm.

Two Metro trains travelling direct from Sunderland railway station to Central Station in Newcastle will leave at 10.43am and 10.55am.

Sunderland will be looking to record their third straight win over the Magpies after they beat them 2-1 earlier this campaign.

Branislav Ivanovic hails Chelsea’s new signing

0

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic has hailed the club’s new signing Mohamed Salah and believes his style is similar to Bayern Munich’s Arjen Robben, who was a fan favourite during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Ivanovic has had to come up against Salah four times over the past two seasons in both European competitions, and during those four games, Salah found the back of the net three times.

The deal was completed at the weekend after The Blues snatched the Egyptian from under Liverpool’s noses and Ivanovic believes it’s a great signing for the club.

Ivanovic said: “He was really good against us. He played very well. We know him because we played him four times in two years.

“He is a great player, very quick, and goes forward with the ball. These are the kind of players we need to improve our team.

“He has time, he is young and it is maybe good for him to step up.

“He reminds me of Robben, the way he plays going from the right wing but going inside left-footed. I hope he is going to be important for us.”

Brendan Rodgers unhappy with activity

0

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed his displeasure at the lack of activity taking place around the club this month, and has promised fans that he will try and make some last-minute signings before Friday’s deadline.

The Reds, who are enjoying a fruitful campaign so far, are yet to sign anyone in this transfer window, and this came after Rodgers promised that additions would be made.

Last season it was Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge that completed their moves to Anfield and this season it did seem that Mohamed Salah was to join that list, but right at the end, Chelsea hijacked the deal and the Egyptian moved to Stamford Bridge instead.

Salah’s move was the second hijacking from Chelsea as they prevented Liverpool from signing Willian in the Summer, and Rodgers has admitted that he is beginning to feel frustrated about the lack of activity taking place.

‘We’ll probably judge that (whether this month has been a frustration) best when the window has shut,’ said Rodgers. ‘We will see where we are at when the window shuts. Of course I wanted to strengthen the team that was already here.

‘If we are unable to that it would be disappointing, but there’s nothing you can do about it.  If we don’t get them in then, as a coach, I’ll work with what I’ve got. There’s no point in looking back on it.

‘We’ll reflect on it and as I said my sole intention then will be to maximise and get everything out of the players I have left. We can identify the players that we want to bring in and we hope we can get them in.

‘If we can, the club will do everything possible to match the value worth of the player. If they end up going to another club that of course is difficult to take. But you can’t worry about it you’ve just got to keep looking forward.’
