Police give warning over Y-word being used

0

Metropolitan Police have released a statement ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s game with West Ham United at the weekend revealing that any use of the Y-word could end in arrest.

There has been a lot of debate on whether or not people should be able to use the Y-word in the football ground, despite the fans calling themselves that.

It is still unclear whether or not the term is found acceptable amongst fans, but the police have made it clear that they will not accept any use of the word.

A Police statement read: “Some words – like the ‘Y’ word – which historically have been perceived by some as acceptable, cause harassment, alarm or distress to others, and people who use this language could be committing a criminal offence.”

Chief Superintendent Mick Johnson, the match commander on Sunday, told Sky News: “It does actually cause offence to some members of the Jewish community.

“We are going to go up to people first, engage firstly and try to explain to them what it means. Hopefully people will take that warning and desist from using the Y word.

“Anyone who continues to use it or fails to take on our advice may be subject to arrest.”

Triple injury-boost for Brendan Rodgers

0

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is hopeful that three of his first-team players will be fit in time for their clash with Newcastle United after the next international break.

Glen Johnson, Aly Cissokho and Joe Allen are all out injured at the moment, but The Reds boss is hopeful that they will be back for the trip to St James Park on the 19th of this month.

Johnson has not played since picking up an ankle injury in the 1-0 win over Manchester United last month, while Cissokho and Allen have been out of action with ankle and hamstring injuries which they both picked up back in August.

“Glen’s out on the field and hopefully after the international break he’ll be ready to come back into the squad,” said Rodgers.

“We’re okay. Aly Cissokho has trained over the course of the last week or so, so I think after the international break he’ll be fine and fit. Joe Allen likewise – he should be ready for the Newcastle game.

“Coutinho will not be long after. Obviously Sebastian Coates will be that bit longer and has a bit more to do yet, but apart from that we’re getting back to our numbers now.”

Captaincy isn’t just for on the pitch, reveals Arsenal leader

0

Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has revealed that being captain isn’t just for match-day and doesn’t just last for the 90-minutes.

The Belgium international is the club-captain at the Emirates, despite not being a regular starter after falling behind Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, but despite his status, Arsene Wenger has still kept him on as the leader.

Many fans have been questioning why Vermaelen is still the captain of the club, but he has revealed on the club’s official website that you are not just a captain on the pitch for 90-minutes.

“I’m really proud to be captain and still so happy to be playing for this club,” he said.

“A great captain is somebody who wants to be a leader, not just on the pitch but on the training field as well. A great captain wants to set a good example to all their team-mates and help them in difficult times. That could be in a game or when they have difficult times individually.”

Nemanja Vidic believes quality is still at United

0

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has admitted that the team are not playing well enough and have made too many mistakes, however, he claims that the quality is still in the squad.

The Red Devils have only picked up seven points from their six Premier League games and could only pick up a point in Ukraine on Wednesday in the Champions League.

Losses to Liverpool, Manchester City and even West Bromwich Albion have raised eyebrows about the United squad and their new manager, David Moyes, but the club’s captain is confident that they still have the quality to compete at the top.

‘We have to accept it has not been a great start,’ said Vidic.

‘We have not been getting the performances we would have liked and we also have to be realistic enough to accept we have made some mistakes.

‘This team has a lot of potential and we are working really well.

‘Sometimes the results don’t come. Sometimes the performances don’t come. But I am really positive.

‘The most important thing is to defend right. If we defend well, I think we have a really good chance to win trophies.’

‘You don’t want to make mistakes two or three times,’ he added.

‘That is the main thing. Once you have made one, don’t do it again.

‘That is the thing we have to learn.

‘The last 10 days have been tough. We lost concentration at certain times, which we shouldn’t have allowed.

‘We are doing everything we can. We just have to be patient.’

It would have been a penalty if I was at Arsenal, reveals Marouane Chamakh

0

Crystal Palace striker Marouane Chamakh believes if he was playing for Arsenal, he would have been rewarded a penalty last weekend, but instead, he was booked for diving.

The Moroccan international went down after being approached by the Southampton goalkeeper and despite there being no-contact, the striker believes that if he was in an Arsenal shirt, he would haven won the penalty.

Despite not saying it himself, according to manager Ian Holloway, Chamakh told him that if he was at his former-club, a penalty would have been given.

Holloway said:’He headed it and was just looking at the ball, and he said if he’d been at Arsenal he would have got a penalty.

‘But I still think he should have shot.’

We play better in positive atmospheres, says Wenger

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes his players play better when there is a positive atmosphere around the ground.

In recent time, the Emirates has been known to be quite a quiet ground with a lot of tension and nervy supports, but so far this season, it has been electric, especially on Tuesday night for the Napoli game in the Champions Leauge.

The Gunners eventually went on to win 2-0 against the Italians and Wenger believes his players perform better when the fans are on their side.

“What is positive is that the team plays better when the environment is positive,” Wenger told Arsenal Player.

“We played in a sceptical environment last year and that does not create a great level of confidence. What has changed recently for sure is that our environment is positive, our fans believe in us again.

“That of course is very important if we want to be successful, if you feel your fans believe in you and they think that you are good. I’ve said many times that I feel it’s important for the team to feel that the fans stand behind the team.

“On my side, my job I see the other way – it’s not for the fans to make me happy, it’s my job to make the fans happy. I feel I do that if they stand behind the team, because that gives you the feeling that they have done something right.”

Roy Hodgson backs Joe Hart

0

England manager Roy Hodgson has given his support to Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart.

The English shot-stopper was at fault for all three of Bayern Munich’s goals last night during City’s 3-1 Champions League defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

Social networking sites and all of today’s papers jumped on the back of Hart and all criticised the keeper, but his national manager gave him his backing.

‘Goalkeepers are always going to be in that situation, they are like forwards who don’t score.

‘They are in the firing line when it comes to criticism. It’s easier to criticise them than the player who made the initial mistake.

‘I’m sure Joe will shrug this off, he won’t be happy, but it’s a fact of life. He has never let us down and I have every confidence and faith in him. He will put it behind him.

‘Your confidence improves when you get rave reviews. He went through a bad period last night, he let in three goals.

‘He kept a clean sheet against Moldova and Ukraine – we’ve let in three goals in eight games. It will take a lot for me to replace him. We need experience in these games.

‘If you look at the keepers we have, he is the No1.’

‘This is not a good moment for Joe, he’s a proud man. But I believe in him and he’s the right man for the job.

‘That’s the only way I can answer the question honestly. I talk a lot to everyone so I don’t know why he should escape.’

Jurgen Klopp banned for Arsenal game

0

Borussia Dortmund manaer Jugren Klopp will have to watch his side’s Champions League match with Arsenal from the stands, after his touchline ban was extended by UEFA.

The Dortmund coach was sent off two weeks ago during his side’s 2-0 defeat to Napoli after he angrily confronted the fourth official on the touchline.

Klopp was not pleased with several decisions during the game and eventually he snapped. He got right into the face of the referee and started yelling at him, which eventually resulted in him getting sent off.

Originally, UEFA gave him a one-game touchline ban, which he served on Tuesday night during his side’s 3-0 win over Marseille, but his ban has now been extended and he will now be in the stands for the crucial game with Arsenal.

“This decision can be appealed. Borussia Dortmund are currently considering whether to go down that route,” a Dortmund statement said.

Chelsea midfielder insist he will not sulk on sidelines

0

Chelsea star Juan Mata has admitted that he will not sulk on the sidelines and will fight harder than ever to be in the first-team for The Blues, after he was dropped by new manager Jose Mourinho.

Despite having two very impressive season’s at Stamford Bridge, Mata was dropped to the bench for the opening fixtures of the Premier League because Mourinho doesn’t believe he has enough tactical ability to be in the first-team.

His chances were then further damaged when the former-Real Madrid boss brought in a couple of attacking-midfielders who played in the same manner as Mata.

However, although he is sitting on the bench, the Spaniard is confident that he can still have a good season with the club and he is still feeling positive, despite the snub.

“I just keep going, train well and prepare for every game,” he told Chelsea’s official website.

“I just have to do my best in training and in games. It’s important to play with the ball and without the ball, but I’m very happy and looking forward to playing a lot of games throughout the season.

“I try to improve every season; my first and second seasons were fantastic but I want this one to be even better so I will try to improve, score goals, assist and do what I have to do.

“I’m not the kind of man that gets down. I always believe in myself and train really hard. This is my way to behave, to be positive as much as I can.

“I have really enjoyed playing for this club in the last two seasons. I know what I can give to the team and I’m just trying to do that.

“I have to do this (to adapt to Mourinho’s instructions). I try to do my best in every game and I think I’m doing that.”

Mikel Arteta dismisses invincible talks

0

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta has played down talks linking the current squad with the invincibles of 2003/2004, but the Spaniard admits that Mesut Ozil does take the club to a whole new level.

The Gunners are in red-hot form recently, winning every game since their opening day defeat to Aston Villa and their run was extended on Tuesday night after they beat Napoli 2-0 in the Champions League.

There is no question that Arsenal’s best squad came back in 2003, with the likes of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires, Patrick Vieira and so many, many more, but some people are suggesting that the current crop at Arsenal, could be just as good.

However, their vice-captain has quickly dismissed those links and has admitted that they are not that good…yet.

“I don’t think we are at that level yet, but competition makes everyone work harder so it is a great thing because it raises the level,” said Arteta. “If you don’t play well for one or two games, then you can be dropped.

“We have players to come back like Santi (Cazorla) and Abou Diaby and that’s the way we want it. When it is really tough, everyone is at 100 per cent and that makes a big difference.”

Arteta then spoke about Ozil and believes the signing showed intent from the club.

“It was a great message from the club because everyone was really expecting a top, top player, probably a striker rather than a number 10, but in the end we got an amazing player and that gave a lift to everyone, not only us but you can see the people are excited again to come and watch and that makes a big difference,” he said.

“A player like Ozil gives you a step forward quality-wise and gives you another player on the pitch who can decide the game for you.

“He proved again that he is able to do it and that’s always great. The more players you have like that, the better chance you have.”

Sir Alex Ferguson opens up about Wayne Rooney’s summer

0

Former-Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he didn’t have a falling out with striker Wayne Rooney in the summer and he has also lifted the lid on what really went down during the summer between the two.

Just after the 2012/2013 campaign came to an end, with United winning their 21st league title, reports broke that Rooney had once again asked to leave the club.

Then followed months of speculation about the Englishman’s future with both Chelsea and Arsenal interested, however it was only The Blues who made a formal bid.

Giving an interview, Ferguson was asked about Rooney and the former-United boss was very open about what took place in the summer and here is what he had to say.

“He asked away,” said Ferguson. “He came in the day after we had won the title. Nothing happened that I would get upset about.

“Wayne is unfortunate in the sense that he is England’s big white hope. So therefore, the media is always centred around Wayne.

“And he has people who advise him. And I think that’s where all that’s coming from.

“I never fell out with him at any time, you know. Sometimes I would discipline him, but sometimes they all need discipline.”

Ferguson added: “When the club refused to sell him to Chelsea, he realised his only job was Manchester United. It’s brought back his focus.

“It’s brought back his work ethic and his purpose, and, you know, he’s playing well again.

“So maybe that was a good turning point for the boy. Did it end badly? No, I don’t think so.

“I think if Wayne walked in here today, he would shake my hand.”

Arsene Wenger set for three-year deal

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is set to be offered a three-year contract extension at the club which will be worth around ÂŁ8million a season.

The Frenchman’s current contract expires this summer and there were major rumours suggesting that this would be his last season at the Emirates Stadium, but since the improvement of form and the signing of Mesut Ozil, it appears that he may now stay on longer.

The new three-year deal will see him reach 20-years at the club and will also see him earn ÂŁ500,000 more a season.

Ivan Gazidis, the club’s chief executive, wants to wrap up the deal as soon as possible, but Wenger himself is in no rush to put pen to paper and has already said that he wants to see how things go this season first of all, but his main intention is to stay on at the club.
