Jose Mourinho: ‘The best team lost’

0

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was left baffled after the full-time whistle blew at Goodison Park yesterday as he saw his side fall to a 1-0 defeat to Roberto Martinez’s Everton, despite having the majority of the chances.

The visitors fully controlled the game and had chance after chance but unfortunately for Mourinho, none of his players could find the back of the net and they were left ruing those missed chances when Steven Naismith put the hosts up just before half-time.

The loss is Mourinho’s first in the Premier League since his return and after the game, he told Sky Sports that he was baffled by the loss and couldn’t believe his side were leaving Merseyside with no points.

Mourinho told Sky Sports: “I don’t know if I have to say we didn’t deserve to lose, or if I should say we deserved to lose.

“We didn’t deserve it (to lose) because we were the best team, because we play the best football, because we dominate the whole game, because we had 21 shots, because we risk everything we could…

“In that sense it is fair to say we deserved to win the game.

“But the other way, a team that has 21 shots, some of them easy shots and easy situations to score and we don’t score and we have a mistake in the last minute of the first half…

“Maybe with that I should say we deserve to lose.”

Olivier Giroud plays down injury fears

0

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has played down fears that his injury sustained during Saturday’s victory over Sunderland could keep him out for a few weeks.

The Frenchman was substituted late on after going down after a tough challenge from a Sunderland defender and after the game Arsene Wenger admitted that the injury could be a massive blow to The Gunners.

However, Giroud took to social networking site Twitter to reassure fans that his knee is okay.

The striker tweeted: ‘My knee is ok don’t worry! Thanks for your support’.

The former-Montpellier striker has been in superb form for Arsenal so far this season, scoring four goals from four Premier League games.

David Moyes not happy with Ashley Young

0

Manchester United manager David Moyes has admitted that he is not happy with winger Ashley Young after he appeared to dive in order to win a penalty against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The English winger has built up quite a reputation of diving and after looking at replays, it is clear to see the United winger took yet another dive in order to win a spot-kick, which resulted in a Palace player getting sent off and also Robin Van Persie giving United the lead.

The champions eventually went on to win 2-0, but after the game, Moyes admitted that he wasn’t impressed by Young’s actions.

Moyes said: ‘I’ve always said I don’t like diving. He deserved to get booked. I don’t want any of my players diving, I don’t want anybody doing it.

‘If you look at it (the penalty), the boy definitely throws his leg out and Ashley’s leg goes into it. I think Ashley has put his leg into it. But I will definitely say to Ashley that it is not what I want.’

Moyes continued: ‘I don’t like the rule where every time it is the last man it means it is (a red card).’

‘I thought it was harsh. If I was Ian Holloway I would be disappointed.

‘OK, it might be a penalty. But I don’t think the boy made a challenge to wipe him out.

‘Unfortunately that is the rule.’

Liverpool manager warns striking duo

0

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has played down fears that egos could get in the way of a potential lethal partnership developing between strike duo Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez.

Sturridge has become one of the fan-favourites at Anfield scoring three times already this season and also winning August’s player of the month competition, but there are fears that he could collide with former-star man Suarez, when the Uruguayan returns from his lengthy suspension.

Suarez will become available for Liverpool later this month and there are some doubts whether or not Sturridge and Suarez could develop a partnership together up front, but Rodgers is adamant that the team must come first, rather than their own personal goals.

‘Liverpool isn’t that type of club,’ he said. ‘It’s a club where players get told where to play. We don’t mollycoddle them, they are expected to come in and do a job. If they want to be the superstar, if they want to be the individual, they can forget it.

‘It’s about the team and whatever they can bring to the team, they will do. We know what strikers are like, what they want. But I don’t think it’s an issue in this case.’

‘Neither of them will be the main man. This is based around a team,’ said the straight-talking Liverpool manager. ‘People were talking about Suarez being a one-man team last year, I kept saying we’re not and if you look at the results since, clearly we weren’t.

‘I see them both as people. I was exactly the same at Chelsea, the boys there like John Terry will tell you that.’

‘Sturridge has this myth around him that he was a real arrogant sort, a difficult boy. He’s actually one of the nicest boys I’ve met.’

0

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti is happy with Gareth Bale’s debut after the Welshman found the net just 38 minutes into his La Liga opener.

The former-Tottenham man couldn’t help Madrid get three points, but his goal did pull them back into the game just before half-time. The match eventually finished 2-2.

Bale’s debut lasted just over an hour before he was substituted for Angel Di Maria, but all the Spanish newspapers are dominated this morning with pictures of the 24-year-old celebrating his goal and after the match, his manager was full of praise for his performance.

‘I think he (Bale) is happy to score his first goal for Real Madrid. He played in a difficult match and he played well, showing his good attitude’. Ancelotti said.

‘It was a hard match for everyone.’

Arsenal dealt Cazorla blow

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Spanish midfielder Santi Cazorla is set to miss the next few weeks of action due to an ankle injury.

It is believed that Cazorla picked up the injury during training and his exclusion from yesterday’s squad puzzled fans, but after the game, Wenger confirmed that the midfielder has picked up an injury and will miss the next few weeks of action.

The Gunners didn’t seem to miss Cazorla yesterday though as they strolled to a 3-1 victory away at Sunderland, but after the game, Wenger confirmed the news about Cazorla.

He said: “Cazorla has an ankle problem. He will be out for a few weeks as well. I don’t think he will play before the next international break”.

Former Tottenham player ruined Gareth Bale debut

0

Gareth Bale, world’s most expensive player, made his Real Madrid debut yesterday and what a debut it was, or maybe could have been.

Villareal dominated the game from every position in the first half as they also took the lead and if it wasn’t for Diego Lopez, Real would’ve been humiliated but Gareth Bale had other plans on his debut and leveled the two sides before half-time.

Gareth Bale’s dream debut was about to happend as Cristiano Ronaldo scored in the 64th minute and Real Madrid was looking stronger and stronger but Giovani dos Santos was going to be the man with the last word.

With his 3rd goal in 4 appearances this season, dos Santos scored the equalizer in the 70th minute, 2-2, as the also game ended.

The Mexican International was hot property on the market this summer after excellent performances with Mallorca last season. Plenty of teams like Valencia, Atletico Madrid, LA Galaxy and Real Betis all wanted to snap him up but Villareal got their man.

Both of the former Tottenham players were substituted in the second half.

REACTION FROM SUNDERLAND VS ARSENAL

0

Arsenal were able to continue their impressive run of form with a 3-1 away victory at the Stadium of Light this afternoon thanks to goals from Olivier Giroud and a brace from Aaron Ramsey.

Here is what was said to reporters, after the game.

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey on Mesut Ozil and scoring:

“You’ve seen what he is all about slipping those balls in, he has one of highest assist-rates in Europe and he is going to create a lot of opportunities for us.

“I’m delighted to be on the scoresheet again. In the last few seasons I’ve been getting into right positions but maybe I’ve been lacking a bit of composure but I’m enjoying it now.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger on Jozy Altidore’s disallowed goal:

“We were a bit lucky at 2-1 maybe, but we found the mental resources to win.

“It could have been a foul for us as well because Altidore took Sagna as well but the referee blew before the goal, I was sure of that because I saw him.”

Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio on referee Martin Atkinson denying Jozy Altidore’s goal:

“This is a big mistake. It’s obvious, this is not Paolo Di Canio’s opinion, the referee has to wait and see how the action finishes. When it is body to body with Jozy Altidore and Bacary Sagna, he has to wait until how it finishes and not stop the game. It was a big, big mistake.”

Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio on being sent off:

“He came to me and said if you keep going with your manner I sent you up to the stand. I said to him ‘if you want to complete a perfect job, you send me off.’ And that is what he did. I will never invite the referee to send me off again.”

Sunderland striker Jozy Altidore on his disallowed goal:

“I was just tussling back and forth with Bacary Sagna but I thought the referee was going to let us play, I got the better of him and then finished it off but I didn’t hear the whistle and it was brought back. The keeper didn’t either as he played 100% and I think Kieran Gibbs tried to clear it too. It was a good time to score and it would have been a good reward for us.”

REACTION FROM ASTON VILLA VS NEWCASTLE

0

Newcastle United picked up an impressive three points at Villa Park today thanks to goals from Hatem Ben Arfa and Yoan Gouffran.

Here is what was said after the game.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew:

“We carried a lot of offensive threat. We haven’t had enough threat, but we’ve got it now. Hatem Ben Arfa got a lot of headlines last time he scored against Fulham but I thought he did just OK then. Today he was unplayable. Hatem was on fire today.

“He has the ability to hold on to the ball and give us a rest, then burst past one or two players. If he can get consistency not only will he be a threat for us, but a threat for France at the World Cup.”

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert:

“We never really got going in the first half. Credit to Newcastle on that side. We got back in the game with Christian’s [Benteke] goal. The second goal was a poor goal to concede. You pick yourselves up when you go behind and go again. We gave it a right go but you can’t start the way we did.”

Arsene Wenger defends Jack Wilshere after international criticism

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has jumped to the defence of his midfielder Jack Wilshere after numerous England fans slammed his performance on Tuesday night away in Ukraine.

Roy Hodgson’s men were held to a goalless draw in their World Cup Qualifier and the performance was far from impressive, but it was the Arsenal midfielder that picked up most of the abuse.

Despite picking up heavy criticism, Wilshere’s club manager, Arsene Wenger, has jumped to the player’s defence and has revealed that playing for your country adds to the pressure unlike playing for your club.

“Jack has been a doubt, a little bit, physically,” the manager said. “The problem in the modern game is that you need to be absolutely 100 per cent to express your talent. Or you don’t.

“At the moment Jack is not completely at his best physically. That’s why people start to question his performances but I think he is a fantastic footballer and he will show that. He needs consistency now.

“Jack has the personality to be a top, top, top player. He has gone through a difficult period. He is conscious that England were not at their best. It can happen.

“Of course [too much pressure is put on his shoulders]. That’s the problem with national teams. I watched the French team and it was the same.

“How can it happen? You have all these players, he plays at Bayern, he plays at Real Madrid, he plays at Arsenal, the other one at Paris Saint-Germain… you put them all together and nothing happens. It is a mystery.

“The pressure suddenly for all the players is completely different. At their clubs they are used to it in a certain way, but it’s different in the national team.

“If Jack has the same game at Arsenal we just say that today he was not at his best. But when he has that game in the national team, suddenly everyone questions your ability. They play in the national team with that kind of pressure and it comes from everybody.”
