Jack Wilshere reveals why Arsenal are so good away from home

0

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has revealed the secret behind the side’s impressive away form as of late and has put it down to strong mentality and togetherness between the players.

The Gunners extended their 100% away record to seven games with a 3-1 victory against Sunderland on Saturday and it was their impressive away form that guided them to yet another fourth placed finish last season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Wilshere believes the togetherness of the team is what makes them so hard to beat on their travels.

“I think we’ve carried that on from last season,” he told Arsenal Player. “There was a mentality at the end of last season where we had to win games. We had to get that fourth spot.

“We’ve carried that on into this season so far, especially with the away results. We seem to play really well away from home and hopefully we can take that form into the home games now as well.

“We all get on really well here. We’ve got a great set of lads and we’ve been together for four or five years now, most of us. We’re starting to build a real friendship and I think that’s shown on the pitch.”

The Gunners number-10 was also full of praise for their new number-11 after Mesut Ozil made a great start to his Arsenal career.

“He’s a top quality player,” Wilshere said.

“We play football and he’s going to fit in. He’s shown that after one game. There’s a lot more to come from him and if he can stay fit and get in that position a lot more, if we can get him on the ball behind their midfield, he’s going to cause the opposition a big problem and he showed that today.”

Kaka refuses wages after injury blow

0

AC Milan midfielder Kaka has today announced that he has told his club not to pay him throughout the duration of his latest injury.

Kaka made his return to the Rossoneri after his free transfer from Real Madrid at the weekend against Torino and suffered an early setback with an adductor muscle injury. However, the midfielder told the club’s website “Yesterday was tough for me as I found out about my injury.”

“I have decided that I do not want anything from Milan except their moral support and affection. Until I am fit and ready again I have decided not to receive my wages.”

Having taken a significant wage cut to complete the move back to the San Siro, this is an early disappointment. I think I speak for all football fans in wishing Kaka a speedy recovery – hopefully to the form that won him the Ballon d’Or back in 2007.

Ashley Young might dive again, admits David Moyes

0

Manchester United manager has revealed that he cannot stop winger Ashley Young from diving and has also admitted that the Englishman may do it again in the future.

Moyes slated Young after United’s 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace at the weekend after the winger got booked for diving in the first-half and also went down easily in order to win a penalty and get a Palace player sent off.

The former-Everton boss said that he doesn’t support what Young did and admitted that he will speak to the player, but ahead of their Champions League tie with Bayer Leverkusen, Moyes has revealed that he cannot stop the player from diving.

Moyes said: ‘I can never be sure that it won’t happen again. I’ve had a word privately. I have always said that it is something we should have retrospective video action for. That would help the referees no end. It is really difficult for referees.

‘We can make up all the things we like for punishments but referees have rules that they have to abide by and the referee on Saturday did what he had to do and gave him a yellow card. My views on this don’t change from being Everton  manager to Manchester Utd. The referee got the decision correct and called it right. He gave him the punishment.’

Sergio Ramos surprised at how good Gareth Bale is

0

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has labelled Gareth Bale as a ‘frightening’ player and has also admitted that no-one at the Spanish club knew just how good the winger was.

The former-Tottenham Hotspur man has been training with Madrid for the last week now and even made his debut at the weekend, during the side’s 2-2 draw with Villarreal, a game in which Bale scored his first goal for the Spanish giants.

The club have flown over to Turkey ahead of their Champions League game with Galatasaray and in an interview, Ramos has admitted that everyone is surprised at how good the 24-year-old actually is.

‘Of course Gareth Bale has been the biggest transfer of the summer – and we are glad now that he is with us.

‘The truth is because he did not play for a team in England that played in the Champions League – we did not know that much about him.

‘We know if he the coach wanted him that strongly he must be a good player – but nobody was prepared for how special he is.

‘It has only been a few training sessions we have seen him in – but some of what we see we can’t believe. He is so fast, so tricky, and the frightening thing is that he is not even 100 per cent game fit yet.’

We showed we can win ugly, says Wenger

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes his side proved that they can win games even when they are not at their best, something they couldn’t achieve a few years ago.

Premier League champions Manchester United and well known for winning games despite playing to the best of their ability and Wenger believes that is what his side did on Saturday against Paulo Di Canio’s men.

A brace from Aaron Ramsey and another goal from Olivier Giroud gave Arsenal the three points and despite the two-goal margin, Wenger admitted that his side dug out the victory.

“We have seen another aspect of our game – that is mental resources and [the ability to] dig a victory out,” Wenger told Arsenal Player. “It was a very important win for us.

“In the first half I felt that we played outstandingly well but we didn’t take our chances. And then five minutes into the second half it was 1-1 and it was backs to the wall a little bit because we dropped physically.”

Not only did the win put The Gunners top of the Premier League, it was also their seventh successive away victory and the manager puts that down to playing with no fear.

“We play without fear, with confidence, with desire to dictate the game and that’s the main reason. The quality of our collective play is very good, we can keep the ball and that’s very important away from home.”

Villas-Boas praises new boy Eriksen

0

After a debut to remember against Norwich on Saturday, Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas has high hopes for Danish international Christian Eriksen, and expects him to rise to the challenge that the Premier League will offer.

It took the 21 year old less than half an hour to rack up his first assist in the Premier League and he was also involved in Spurs’ second. “The Premier League will offer him (Eriksen) the kind of challenge he didn’t have in the Dutch league.”

“I think Christian is a pure number 10. That is of his creativity and also the position he has occupied all of his life. He is naturally gifted playing there.”

Speaking after the game against Norwich, Eriksen himself admitted he had other offers on the table but both the club (Spurs) and the league felt very good, therefore it was a easy choice to join Tottenham. The attacking midfielder went on to say that the Tottenham fans are allowed to expect big things this season as a result of some big name signings in the transfer window.

Even at this early stage, the £11million paid for the player looks to have been a bargain. Eriksen will have another chance to showcase his abilities for Spurs in the Europa League tie on Thursday night against Tromso – a match which all Spurs fans will be looking forward to.

Mark Halsey fears a referee could commit suicide

0

Mark Halsey refereed in Premier League from 1999 until his retirement last season. In his autobiography Added Time he warns that pressure on officials is higher than ever before.

“There is no hiding place on the field and you have to be mentally tough. But it also follows you off the field more and more now and it can destroy you.”

He points to social media being responsible for added pressure on referees off the field. He fell victim to abuse himself after a controversial penalty during a Liverpool Manchester United fixture last season. Halsey who has suffered from cancer got comments like “I hope your cancer comes back” on Twitter.

“I do feel that referees should get more help to cope with the increasing level of mental strain. In my view, given some of the episodes of recent seasons, it will not be long before a referee has a nervous breakdown.”

“I also believe that if we do not do something to help referees with mental health and stress issues, then we could see a suicide.”

Olivier Giroud should be fit for Marseille

0

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has revealed that he should be fit in time for the Champions League game against Marseille after he picked up a knock against Sunderland on Saturday.

Fans of Arsenal were left fearing the worst when their only recognised striker got substituted late on during their 3-1 victory over The Black Cats because of a knee injury, but now it appears that they have nothing to worry about.

After the game, Arsene Wenger, seem pretty worried about the fitness of his only striker and said that it’s a big worry that he could be injured, but the man that has scored in every Premier League game so far has confirmed that he should be fit for the clash with the French side.

Giroud said: ‘It is not bad actually, not as bad as I first feared. I got a kick earlier in the game but no-one was near me when I did it this time.

‘I tried to connect with the ball a little bit too early and I caught my foot in the grass. I twisted my ankle but fortunately,  it is nothing major.

‘I am OK, sure I will be fine [for Marseille].’

Swansea v. Liverpool Preview

0

A win for Liverpool would not only take them to the top of the table, it would be also be the club’s 400th victory since Premier League started, and their best start since 1990. Daniel Sturridge has scored in all three 1-0 victories, but missed England’s World Cup qualifiers due to a lingering thigh injury. Despite this he will likely be fit to play tonight. Victor Moses has joined Liverpool on loan from Chelsea and the Nigerigan winger might make his debut tonight. Lois Suarez still has two matches left on his suspension.

Michael Laudrup’s Swansea has had a tough start, but won against West Brom away in their last fixture. The Welsh team has done better in Europe though, after an impressive qualification campain they will face Valencia away on Thursday in their first group stage match in Europa Leauge. Swansea has a busy schedule ahead of them, but Laudrup will likely field the strongest possible squad at Liberty Stadium.

The Reds hasn’t won at Swansea since 1982, but we believe Liverpool will win tonight. Last season they beat Swansea 5-0 at Anfield, and we expekt Sturridge to continue his fine form after a few weeks rest. Another 1-0 victory for Liverpool.

Dani Alves offered me his liver, reveals Eric Abidal

0

Former FC Barcelona defender Eric Abidal has revealed that his team-mate at the time, Dani Alves, offered him his liver before he underwent surgery.

The 34-year-old footballer had to have a liver transplant last April, which saved his life, but his football was effected and because of it, he was released by the Spanish giants.

Abidal, who now plays for mega-rich AS Monaco, revealed in an interview the kind gesture offered by Alves and he admitted that their friendship is very special.

‘My relationship with Dani goes much further than him taking my old No.22 shirt.

‘When I had to undergo surgery, he offered to donate his liver.

‘Of course, it’s completely out of the question because he is a professional footballer.

‘Our relationship goes much deeper than friendship.’

Arsenal striker happy with current form

0

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has revealed that he believes he is in the best form of his Premier League career so far after scoring in every one of the league games so far this season.

Goals against Aston Villa, Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and now Sunderland has seen him become one of the impressive strikers so far this campaign and he has put it down to his team-mates understanding him a lot more.

Giroud was brought in to replace Robin Van Persie last summer and seemed to struggle to adapt to English football to start with, but eventually ended the season with 17 goals in all competitions and now with a better understanding and also new signing Mesut Ozil in the team, Giroud believes he will score a lot more for the club.

‘This is the best run I have had since I joined Arsenal and I think it is also my best form too.

‘And now that we have our new player, it can get even better.

‘We knew all about his [Ozil’s] quality but when you are out there on the pitch, playing with him, he is even better.

‘He is always looking for opening and sees things so early while his first touch is simply amazing. You can see immediately that he is going to make this team better. But let’s face it, with his quality, he would make any team in the world better.

‘Not every striker is lucky enough to have players like Ozil, Aaron [Ramsey],Jack [Wilshere],Theo [Walcott] and [Santi] Cazorla behind them. I feel very fortunate.’

GARTH CROOKS’ TEAM OF THE WEEK

0

After the weekend’s games, BBC pundit Garth Crooks picked his best XI from the nine games that were played.

Below you can see the players that made his starting line-up.

GOALKEEPER – JOE HART (Manchester City)

Stoke striker Kenwyne Jones should have had a hatful of goals and, if it were not for Joe Hart, he could have. After a shaky start to the season, Hart looks like he is finally starting to show some form.

DEFENDER – CARL JENKINSON (Arsenal)

I got the distinct impression that this lad left Charlton for Arsenal too soon. However, he is beginning to look every bit a Premier League player every time I see him. It was Jenkinson’s cross that was responsible for Aaron Ramsey’s first goal against Sunderland, and the full-back was always prepared to get involved in the action.

DEFENDER – CURTIS DAVIES (Hull City)

The 28-year-old defender scored his first goal of the season in the 1-1 draw against Cardiff. He is a player who, in my opinion, is still to fulfil his true potential, but Hull City is definitely a move in the right direction.

DEFENDER – GARETH McAULEY (West Brom)

I was tempted to select team-mate and fellow centre-back Jonas Olsson in this position until I saw Gareth McAuley’s superb header from a set-piece snatch a point for the Baggies from a desperate Fulham. Just as well as West Brom manager Steve Clarke was looking a little desperate himself at the time.

DEFENDER – DANNY ROSE (Tottenham)

Danny Rose is another Tottenham player who has returned to White Hart Lane after a loan spell looking like a player with a big future. The two blocks he produced to deny Norwich striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel from scoring were enough to make your eyes water.

MIDFIELD – HATEM BEN ARFA (Newcastle)

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has replaced the frown with a smile and the pregnant pauses with praise for his talisman: Hatem Ben Arfa. The Frenchman was superb against Aston Villa, the second consecutive game for the Magpies in which he has impressed.

MIDFIELD – AARON RAMSEY (Arsenal)

You cannot underestimate the impact a fractured leg can have on a professional footballer – both physically and psychologically. Aaron Ramsey has not only recovered from a shocking break but he is now playing some of the best football of his career. Another outstanding display for the midfielder and the Gunners.

MIDFIELD – MESUT OZIL (Arsenal)

Mesut Ozil looked like he had been playing for Arsenal all his life and not a player playing for a new club for the first time. The former Real Madrid midfielder began his debut for Arsenal with a prayer, although he did not need any divine help. He practically tore Sunderland apart all on his own.

FORWARD – GYLFI SIGURDSSON (Tottenham)

John Hartson spoke with glowing praise on Final Score about this player’s performance for Spurs in the 2-0 win against Norwich. His first goal was so technically brilliant that Hartson’s jaw visibly dropped while watching in the studio. The Iceland international was unlucky not to get a hat-trick on the day and his link-up play with Christian Eriksen is another feature well worth keeping an eye on.

FORWARD – WAYNE ROONEY (Manchester United)

Wayne Rooney played the most mesmerising pass to Robin van Persie in the first half against Crystal Palace, which put the Dutchman clear on goal with only the keeper to beat. Not only did Van Persie fail to score, but he also failed to acknowledge the pass from Rooney. Scoring goals will set Old Trafford alight but the occasional acknowledgement of a world-class pass from a world-class player will go down just as well with an appreciative United crowd.

FORWARD – CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN (Tottenham)

A most impressive debut crowned by the most exquisite of passes for Gylfi Sigurdsson’s opening goal against Norwich. The former Ajax favourite appears comfortable on the left or right side and has enough Champions League experience to be a major asset for Tottenham’s European campaign and all for a mere £12m at the tender age of 21.

Aaron Ramsey praises Arsenal debutant

0

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey was full of praise for team-mate Mesut Ozil after he impressed during his debut against Sunderland.

The German international took just 11-minutes to make a name for himself in the Premier League after he set up Olivier Giroud for the side’s opener and after that, he set up Theo Walcott on numerous occasions, but unfortunately for The Gunners, the Englishman couldn’t finish the chances off.

After that, it was then the Ramsey show after he scored two great goals and helped give Arsenal the 3-1 win, but after the game, he was full of praise for team-mate, Ozil.

“I think he showed what he’s all about today slipping those little balls through,” said Ramsey. “He’s a fantastic player and is very gifted. He’s going to create a lot of opportunities for us.

“He has a wonder of a left foot. He caresses the ball and the passes seem to be of a perfect weight and right into people’s strides.”

Martin Jol unhappy with Fulham boo-boys

0

Fulham manager Martin Jol has admitted that he is frustrated with the fans that booed his side after the draw with West Bromwich Albion and has also revealed that he wishes he could confront the fans face-to-face.

After the game ended 1-1 on Saturday, chants of ‘Jol Out’ were heard in some corners of Craven Cottage with the side failing to win a game since the opening day of the season.

With most manager’s usually choosing to bite their tongue, it appears that Jol has finally snapped at the negative fans and he has even stated that some of them are too ambitious for Fulham Football Club.

“I’m a very proud person and I’m used to playing in the top five or even higher,” former Tottenham, Ajax and Hamburg boss Jol said.

“I came here to try and help the club and I would like to help them, make the fans happy. Hopefully I can do that, and if not then we will have a problem.

“At that end, there’s always five, 10 or 15 who shout at me. It looked a bit more, maybe 25 or 30, so it’s getting more and more.

“When people start yelling at you… I would like people to be a bit more appreciative. If they are not, what can I do about it?

“I can’t tell them to come outside of the stadium after the game so I have to put up with it.”

He added: “Sometimes you make mistakes. I remember last year, I think it was the same geezer there and I did something but luckily enough nobody saw it.

“It’s hard to fight expectation levels and maybe a minority feels we should be in the top four or something.

“But if you play in a European cup final (Fulham reached the 2010 Europa League final) then the expectation levels are too high. But that was three years ago.

“I played two semi-finals of the European Cup and I’ve forgotten about it, you know.”

Craig Bellamy could retire soon, according to Cardiff boss

0

Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay has admitted that veteran Craig Bellamy could retire from the game anytime soon because the Welshman feels he can’t keep up with the game anymore.

Late last week, the 34-year-old revealed that this will be his last qualifying campaign with Wales and he also hinted that if could be his last season for club as well.

The former-Liverpool striker missed Cardiff’s weekend game against Hull City after playing 90 minutes on two occasions for his country last week and his club manager, Malky Mackay, has admitted that he could retire from the game soon.

“Craig is quite open in talking about it (retirement) so it’s not a shock to anyone if it happens at the end of the season,” said Mackay.

“He’s someone at ease with seeing how the season goes and making that decision in the summer.

“I talk to him about Kevin Phillips and Ryan Giggs, who take it a season at a time, but there will be a point where, because of his knees, Craig wants a life with his family where he can walk about and not have arthritis in his knees for the rest of his life.

“And there’ll be a point where he says ‘that’s not quite yet, I’m going to have another season’.”

Mackay then revealed that Bellamy may retire from international duty soon so that he can keep playing for his club.

“There might be a point where he finally decides ‘I’ve sweated and given blood for my country for a long time and I’ll now come out of that to elongate my career’,” Mackay added.

“But that will be something he’ll decide. I’m quite relaxed.

“It’s important for Wales that they get their best players out there and I’m a big supporter of them.

“I live in the country and am good friends with the people involved in the national team, including Chris Coleman.

“If one of my players can help out, great, but I’m also aware our club needs him.”
