Football clubs that no longer exist – Top 10

Some big clubs have disbanded over the years – many of which have become long forgotten, so here are the Top 10 football clubs that no longer exist. We look at the Top 10 football clubs that no longer exist – although that could be argued to not be the case for some!

Some football clubs simply run out of money or their situation changes, their country changes etc. Here we will look at the Top 10 football clubs that no longer exist.

10. K.S.V. Waregem (Belgium)

The Belgium side existed for 76 years until 2001. They never managed to win the league but featured prominently in Belgium’s top tier. After winning the 1974 domestic cup, they ended up in third division by 1999 and financial difficulties led them to disbanding and joining up with fellow Belgian side to form S.V. Zulte Waregem.

9. FC Amsterdam (Netherlands)

A former genuine contender to Ajax, FC Amsterdam had previously managed to reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup. However, they were relegated in 1978 and the club eventually dissolved as their attendances went into decline.

8. Los Angeles Aztecs (USA)

Disappeared from the football scene as quickly as they came onto it. George Best, Johan Cruyff and manager Rines Michels all featured at the club. Previous winners of the NASL and co-owned by Elton John, they went bankrupt and dissolved in 1982. Now they are in our football clubs that no longer exist list.

7. Dalian Shide (China)

In 2013, the Chinese outfit were bought and swallowed up, despite winning the top flight four times and dominating the league, while also having a billionaire owner who knew nothing about football. Not exactly useful at all.

6. Wimbledon (England)

Won the 1988 FA Cup as a Division 1 club. They were in the Premier League from its inception and stayed in it until the millennium. After relegation in 2000, the board decided to take the club to Milton Keynes in 2002. Supporters started their own club AFC Wimbledon and climbed their way up to the Football League.

5. SV Austria Salzburg (Austria)

Although not technically out of existence, Red Bull took over to make the club they are today, Red Bull Salzburg. They had previously been called SV Casino Salzburg and the club won the Austrian title in ’94 before reaching the UEFA Cup final in the same season. In 2005, Red Bull changed the name, logo, management and staff, in a complete shake-up.

4. Amica Wronki (Poland)

Polish side merged with Lech Poznan, but was only founded in 1992. They won the Polish cup three times on the bounce during their short existence. Also won the resulting Super Cup.

3. Rangers (Scotland)

Had an incredibly successful history in Scottish football, winning 54 first division titles – most of any team in Europe. And first British club to reach a UEFA-sanctioned European final. Placed in administration in 2012, entered liquidation in June 2012. Questionable whether they actually formed a brand new club, as they have since returned to the Scottish Premiership.

2. Dukla Prague (Czechoslovakia)

One of the most successful sides in Czechoslovakia, winning the league 11 times and the Czechoslovak cup on eight occasions. First team in the country to win the double. Fell to third division before merging with another club. Now they are in our Top 10 football clubs that no longer exist.

1. Palermo (Italy)

SSD Palermo is an Italian football club based in the Sicilian city of Palermo. Originally founded on 1 November 1900, Unione Sportiva Citta di Palermo was excluded from Serie B on 12 July 2019. A phoenix club was formed in July of the same year, and was admitted into in Serie D for the 2019-20 season. Palermo were the first club founded in Sicily, the first in the South and the 7th oldest extant club in the country.
