Manager confirms goalkeeper will be sold

Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has confirmed that Victor Valdes will be sold this summer after refusing to play for the reserves last season.

The Spanish goalkeeper agreed to join The Red Devils after leaving FC Barcelona last summer, but with David De Gea as the regular number-one at Old Trafford, his game-time was restricted ever since completing his move there in January.

However, when he was asked by the management team to play for the reserves, he refused.

The 33-year-old was left off the pre-season tour of America, surprising many and causing speculation to arise regarding his future, and at the club’s first press conference, Van Gaal was asked about the veteran’s absence.

Louis Van Gaal Hits out at Valdes

He said: “He doesn’t follow my philosophy. There is no place for someone like that.

“Last year, he refused to play in the second team and there are other aspects you need as a keeper at United.

“When you are not willing to follow those principles, there is only one way and that is out.

“It is a big disappointment. It is a pity because we have given him the opportunity to rehabilitate, gave him a contract and then he is fit to play.”

Valdes still has one year left on his deal at United, but it’s doubtful he’ll see that out with Turkish sides interested in signing him.

The Spaniard made three appearances for the U21s last season and made just one senior appearance in the Premier League. The final game against Hull City.
