According to reports in Spain, Manchester United have beaten off interest from FC Barcelona in order to sign Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels.
A local newspaper has reported this morning that Barca have given up on their pursuit for the German international, and will now turn their attentions to Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Jan Vertonghen instead.
It’s believed that United will pay £16million for Hummels and the Bundesliga side have moved quickly in replacing the German by signing Matthias Ginter from Freiburg.
Hummels would be The Red Devils third major signing this Summer, after they captured Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw, but Louis Van Gaal is keen on signing two new centre-backs after the club lost both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic earlier in the window.
