Liverpool boost in pursuit of Subotic

Dortmund defender wants out of the Westfalenstadion

Borussia Dortmund centre-back Neven Subotic has admitted he wishes to leave the Bundesliga outfit this summer, after having had a reduced role in 2015-16.

It is a boost to Liverpool, who had hoped to draft in the Dortmund defender, following the arrival of former BVB boss Jurgen Klopp, back in December.

Injury problems saw him fall down Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel’s pecking order – making 11 appearances under the BVB manager – and the Serbia international has announced that he will seek a future away from the club, despite signing a new three-year deal last summer.

Writing on his Facebook page, Subotic said: “Dear friends, last year I realised that my love of football in an active role on the pitch is too big to just be able to see it from the outside.

“I am now at the best age for a footballer and naturally want to use this time to bring me and my team forward every day and to have the feeling of being needed on the pitch.

“I don’t want to earn my money sat on the bench, but to be an active part of a story as I was until last year. I hope you can understand.

“BVB are the club of my heart and always will be.”

Subotic is set to become the second defensive departure for Dortmund this summer, after Mats Hummels signed for rivals Bayern Munich, meaning BVB will have to delve into the transfer market.

It is not yet clear if the 27-year-old has a team lined up, but it seems all but certain he will end his eight-year association with the Bundesliga club.
