Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is relishing the prospect of facing German giants Bayern Munich in the Champions League knockout stages, despite being beaten by them this time last year.

The Gunners fell to a 3-1 home defeat at the Emirates Stadium in the first-leg and despite their best efforts in Germany, they couldn’t turn around the deficit, but they did leave the Allianz Arena with a creditable 2-0 victory, which seems to have turned their fortunes around in recent months.

Currently out injured, Chamberlain hasn’t featured since the opening day of the season, but he is hopeful that he will be fit in time to take part in the last-16 fixture and he believes going up against big teams is good for the football club.

“You see the likes of the Barcelonas and Real Madrids and you always want to play against them and obviously Bayern Munich too,” he told Arsenal Player.

“We managed to get a good result away at Bayern last season so that brings back good memories. If you’re going to do well in the competition you’ve got to beat the best teams.

“Obviously the big teams create the bigger atmosphere around the stadiums,” he added.

“I remember before I came to Arsenal I was at the Barcelona game at the Emirates and I just remember the atmosphere there was unbelievable, so when the big teams do come into town it does create a massive buzz.”
