A second operation has been successfully done on Danny Welbeck’s ankle, Arsenal have confirmed.

The 27 year old landed awkwardly on his ankle in the 0-0 draw against Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League and is now set to face a long spell on the sidelines. It is not yet clear when the forward will resume playing football but it certainly is going to be a long few months for the former Manchester United player.

Welbeck had been limited to a handful of minutes on the pitch but his inclusion in the team always guaranteed goals. Despite starting fewer games than the other forward Welbeck has netted five goals so far and his unavailability would be a big disappointment for manager Unai Emery.

A stamen on the Arsenal website read : “Further to sustaining an injury last Thursday against Sporting CP, Danny has undergone a second planned operation on his right ankle.

“Both procedures went well, without complications. Danny will now recuperate and start his rehabilitation. It’s too early to say how long this will take.

“Everyone at the club will now be providing Danny with the best possible treatment and support in order to make him fit again as soon as possible.”
