Chelsea are set to compete with Manchester United for the signature of PSG centre back Marquinhos.

United have been linked with the Brazilian in the last two transfer windows, and according to the player, the Reds came close to signing him last summer.

The French champions PSG have valued Marquinhos at £40 million, and are not prepared to sell him for less.

Louis van Gaal reportedly will make an improved bid at the end of the season, but will have to fight Jose Mourinho for the 20 year old.

The Portuguese was impressed with Marquinhos’ versatility, after playing right back against Chelsea in the Champions League.

This may now tempt the Blues in pursuing him as a long term replacement for John Terry.

PSG however want Marquinhos to sign a new contract extension, despite having three years left at the Parc des Princes.

A source close to the club said: “PSG know there are some big English clubs trying to buy Marquinhos, but, for now, they would prefer not to sell him.

“He is an important player.”
