Blues interested in Paris Saint-Germain star

Chelsea have made a formal approach for Paris Saint-Germain right-back Gregory van der Wiel, according to reports.

The Blues are expected to be in the market for a new defender, but the majority of reports have earmarked them going after a left-back, with Baba Rahman expected to sign from Bundesliga side Augsburg.

However, according to reports this morning, Jose Mourinho also wants to sign another right-back, with Branislav Ivanovic the only current option at the club, with Cesar Azpilicueta now moved to the left-back role.

van der Wiel has been linked with a move to the Premier League in the past, with Manchester United reportedly keen, but after they signed Matteo Darmian from Torino, they cooled their interest.

Chelsea Activity

So far this summer, Chelsea have only landed two new faces, with Radamel Falcao joining on a season-long loan from AS Monaco and Asmir Begovic signing from Stoke City.

However, according to Le Parisien, Chelsea have approached PSG and enquired about the availability of van der Wiel.

The 27-year-old is currently in negotiations with the Ligue 1 champions regarding a new contract, but reports suggest that the club could let him leave if the right offer comes in.

The speculation surrounding a new right-back comes after Ivanovic suffered a nightmare opening weekend against Swansea City, when Jefferson Montero had his number all game.

This performance lead to fans demanding a new right-back to be signed.
