Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney has admitted that former clubmate Danny Welbeck made the right decision to leave Old Trafford in the summer.
Welbeck completed a £16 million transfer on deadline day, and has impressed so far in an Arsenal shirt, including scoring a Champions League hatrick against Galatasaray.
“Of course, Danny has been here [at United] all of his life. He is a Manchester lad so it is weird seeing him [there],” said Rooney.
“But that’s football nowadays and players move on.
“I think, for Danny, and for his own personal career, it was probably the best move for him.”
When it transpired that Louis van Gaal was bringing in Radamel Falcao, Welbeck wanted out of Old Trafford, in order to play regularly for a club that would continue to aid his development.
Rooney added: “He’s done great and scored a few goals and is playing well. Danny gives you what he always gives you- a good shift. He works hard for the team.”
Welbeck will face his former club for the first time on Saturday evening as Arsenal entertain United in North London.
