Championship club Wigan Athletic have secured the permanent signing of ex-Manchester United forward Nick Powell on a three-year contract; he moves to the DW Stadium on a free transfer.

The 22-year old joined United from Crewe Alexandra back in 2012, but only made six senior appearances in all competitions for the club.

Ironically, his only goal in a Red Devils shirt came against his new team Wigan back in the 2012/13 Premier League campaign.

Powell had three loan spells away from Manchester, the most recent where at Hull City and Leicester City. However, his first loan spell was at Wigan during the 2013/14 season.

It is believed that the England under 21 international was originally going to sign for Wigan’s Championship rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Molineux side were allegedly going to offer Powell a ÂŁ16,000-a-week deal, but the negotiations collapsed.

Wolves’ loss was Wigan’s gain as they confirmed Powell as their player via Twitter late last night.
