Arsene Wenger On Why The Premier League Will Be 'Handicapped' When It Returns

Arsene Wenger, the famous former Arsenal manager, has made a surprising statement about the Premier League title battle, implying that Tottenham Hotspur has emerged as a legitimate contender this season. Despite losing their star striker, Harry Kane, and placing ninth last season, Wenger feels Tottenham’s resurgence under Ange Postecoglou’s aggressive philosophy has transformed them into a formidable team.

Wenger said on beIN Sports: “If I said after 10 games [they’d be] top of the league… You ask me, not a tricky question because I like always to say what I feel deeply, and I believe Tottenham will be one of the contenders for the league. They bought Maddison, who is a great player and who is that link from low midfield to high midfield, and added some technical creativity to the team. “They bought Van de Ven who I find exceptional. I find him absolutely exceptional.

“They had weaknesses there [at the back] and last year [Hugo] Lloris didn’t have the best of seasons as well. And overall, the movement from Son into the middle looks very good.”

When asked if he thought Tottenham were genuine title contenders, Wenger added: “For the Premier League. I would say Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and City of course will always come back. They look like the four who will fight at the moment for the Premier League.”

Wenger’s optimism is not unjustified, as Tottenham now leads the Premier League table with 26 points after 11 games, with a two-point advantage over Arsenal. Spurs’ incredible rise has been powered by an amazing goal-scoring streak, with the club scoring 22 goals, second only to Manchester City and Newcastle United.

The arrivals of James Maddison and Micky van de Ven, two promising signings who strengthened their squad, have been critical to their recovery. Despite his long history with Arsenal, Wenger sees Tottenham’s potential and regards them as real challengers for the Premier League crown.

The North London club’s next challenge will be a key match against Chelsea on Monday, November 6, in which they will look to extend their lead at the top of the league. Tottenham’s chances of winning the Premier League look more realistic with their attacking prowess and newfound confidence. Wenger’s recognition of their rivalry adds an additional layer of intrigue to what is building up to be an exciting season in the English Premier League.
