Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher thinks that Arsenal should have considered bringing Rafael Benitez as the successor of Arsene Wenger instead of Unai Emery. Emery’s start to the Premier League has been really shaky, losing their first two matches to Manchester City and Chelsea. However, the Gunners registered their first win of the Premier League by beating West Ham 3-1.

Carragher said, “Rafa is probably my biggest influence in football – I had him for six years as my manager. You look at someone like Rafa and his CV, with what he’s done – he’s got trophies everywhere. Why wasn’t he in the running for the Arsenal job?”

Benitez has been enduring a tough time at Newcastle now. The Magpies are currently 16th in the Premier League with one point. However, Carragher praised the Spaniard’s style of play. The former Liverpool star said, “Rafa would say to me, because I was the organiser, where he wanted the line. We would play high, but against a bigger opponent we’d play 3/4 [up the pitch]. If we was away or in Europe, we might drop a little deeper.”
