Has Bayern President Confirmed Liverpool's Alonso Interest

Despite the recent disappointment of losing their potential quadruple hopes with an FA Cup quarter final defeat to Manchester United, Liverpool could still be on for a very good and successful 2023/24 campaign.

Their hopes are still in securing a treble, and they are well on track to do just that and achieve it given the lay out of the current Premier League table, but of course, the hopes of further success are not the only stories that have come out of Anfield this year – we now know German gaffer Jurgen Klopp will be leaving the club at the end of the season, as he personally feels his time on Merseyside is now up.

Naturally he wants to go out with a bang and on a high, but plenty of the talk right now is about his potential replacement, and the rumour mill favourite is former midfielder Xabi Alonso and any asian gambling site will be carrying those odds.

The 42 year old is enjoying a great season with German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, and they are currently ten points clear of closest chasers Bayern Munich, so given his former ties to the club Alonso is a very obvious pick for Liverpool.

It also seems that German rivals Bayern Munich are also in the hunt for his services as well at the end of the current season, and their honorary president Uli Hoeness has put the cat amongst the pigeons with his recent comments.

Not only did he confirm Bayern’s interest, he absolutely confirmed that they were in a battle with Liverpool to get the signature of the 114 capped former Spanish international.

He also claimed, quite naturally, that Leverkusen were working on convincing him to stay, but apparently Real Madrid were sniffing around – the Real link is a bit left field though.

This will undoubtedly lead fans to wonder if he was just talking for the sake of it, as opposed to actually having any real insider knowledge here. With it increasingly looking likely that he will take Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title this year, added to knowing that both Bayern’s Thomas Tuchel and Liverpool’s Klopp will be leaving a the end of the current campaigns, mentioning those three clubs makes plenty of sense.

However, La Liga giants Real extended Carlo Ancelotti’s deal at the Santiago Bernabeu until the summer of 2026 only last December.

Liverpool fans will be torn on his statement, they will both hope that he is 100% correct in stating that Liverpool have expressed a real interest in him, whilst hoping that the Real comment was just waffle for the sake of it.
