Jamie Carragher disappointed with Gakpo’s performance against Chelsea

Cody Gakpo’s performance during Liverpool’s Carabao Cup final win against Chelsea left Jamie Carragher feeling let down.

In light of the Reds’ win and the heroic play of their inexperienced team, Carragher called out Gakpo specifically for falling short of expectations.

With several important players out with injury, Liverpool had to rely on their young potential to win the trophy. But Gakpo, who was supposed to lead the assault, was unable to have a major effect.

During his 86 minutes on the field, he only managed 21 touches and two shots. Carragher called attention to a specific instance of irritation when Gakpo gave up the ball and Chelsea took back control.

The former Liverpool defender stressed that Gakpo needed to step up and make a more significant impact since there were so many inexperienced players surrounding him.

“He’s got to do more, Gakpo, he’s one of the senior men out there for Liverpool,” said Carragher

Despite Gakpo’s crucial role in Liverpool’s journey to the final, Carragher emphasized the need for consistency and improvement.

The Dutch forward, who showcased promise at the 2022 World Cup, has yet to demonstrate his potential as a long-term solution for Liverpool’s attacking lineup.

Gakpo’s underwhelming performance led to his substitution shortly after Carragher’s criticism, with 18-year-old Jayden Danns replacing him. This substitution encapsulated Gakpo’s tenure at Liverpool thus far, leaving fans and pundits alike questioning his ability to thrive in the club’s setup.

Carragher’s remarks serve as a reminder to Gakpo that he must elevate his game if he wishes to secure a prominent role in Liverpool’s future plans. Otherwise, Liverpool may seek alternative options in the transfer market to bolster their attacking options.
