Ex-defender urged Steven Gerrard to help sign German

Jamie Carragher has revealed how he advised Steven Gerrard to get Liverpool signing Mesut Ozil back when he was playing for Werder Bremen.

The former-defender was talking about the current-Arsenal star, who’s in the form of his life right now for the Gunners, and he admitted that he first noticed the play-maker back during his Bremen days, and he was desperate for Liverpool to make a move for him.

It was back in 2009 when Carragher first spotted Ozil, and after watching him play, he pulled Gerrard to one side and tried to get him to lure the player to Anfield.

At the time Ozil only had one-year left on his contract with the Bundesliga club, but after an impressive 2010 World Cup, he completed a move to La Liga giants Real Madrid.

Carragher Reveals All

Carragher said: “I remember watching Ozil shine for Germany’s Under 21s in 2009 when they beat England 4-0.

“I said to Steven Gerrard at that time he was someone Liverpool had to go for.

“He was at Werder Bremen then and he was an attainable target.

“He continued that big impression at the World Cup in South Africa 12 months later but, by that time, Real Madrid had made their move.”
