The Reds are competing with other Premier League clubs

According to reports, Liverpool are looking to add Sporting Lisbon holding midfielder William Carvalho to their squad.

The Liverpool Echo claim that the Portuguese international could be on his way to Anfield in the January transfer window, despite interest from Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is targeting a defensive midfielder after club captain Jordan Henderson was ruled out for a few weeks with a foot injury, as well as Lucas Leiva’s future at the club being in doubt.

The Brazilian was linked with a move away to Besiktas in the summer, but currently remains a Liverpool player. However, if he is to move on in the winter, it could pave the way for a replacement.

Carvalho would be a perfect fit in this position, but the 23-year old is currently out injured with a stress fracture of the tibia.
