Rio Ferdinand wants his former club to sign Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo.

The Uruguayan defender broke into the Barcelona first-team back in 2018 and has garnered 120 appearances for the Catalan giants since then.

He was pivotal in Barcelona’s La Liga title success last term and was made the club’s third captain this season.

Araujo is one of the highly-rated centre-backs in the world and he signed a contract extension last summer with Barcelona until 2026.

Manchester United will be in the market for a new central defender in the January transfer window and has been linked with several players.

Several first-team defenders like Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are still sidelined and won’t be available until late December.

Club legend Rio Ferdinand believes Ronald Araujo would be an ideal player to bolster United’s backline.

“The Uruguayan boy at Barcelona — Araujo,” Ferdinand said. “Whether he’s gettable or not, I think he’s brilliant. He’s an unreal centre half.

“He has every attribute to be perfect for the Premier League. I’d probably say he’s the standout, but whether he’s gettable or not, I don’t know.”
