Manchester United’s hunt for a defender persists as they are looking for a possible deadline day move to sign Atletico Madrid and Uruguay captain Diego Godin. The Red Devils have made a bid of £22.5 million to trigger Godin’s release clause.

For a long time, Jose Mourinho has been wanting to sign a central defender who can partner Eric Bailly. The likes of Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire were United’s choices but the asking amount for both defenders is massive.

The Red Devils were also eager to sign Yerry Mina but the deal fell out due to a fuss over agent’s fees. Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng is also on Manchester United’s radar but he doesn’t want to leave Bayern Munich.

Diego Godin would be a perfect fit in United’s defense. The 32-year old is one of the best central defenders in Europe and had a terrific World Cup where he led Uruguay to the quarter-finals. Godin was eventually named in the Team of the Tournament.
