Manuel Pellegrini strips captaincy from Zabaleta

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini faces a backlash from several of his senior players after he stripped Pablo Zabaleta of the captain’s armband whilst Vincent Kompany is injured, so that he could give the role to midfield-man Yaya Toure.

The Argentine right-back has been City’s vice-captain for the past two seasons and it is believed that the player’s all agreed to having him as Kompany’s replacement.

However, in a risky move, Pellegrini has now stripped Zabaleta of that role and has given it to Toure.

Despite the Ivorian being a commanding figure in the centre of midfield, it is believed that many players have been left frustrated at the decision to strip the right-back, who is considered one of the favourites in the dressing room.

As well as losing the captain’s armband, Zabaleta was also dropped for the game against Sunderland last weekend.
