‘Big clubs’ targeting 23-year-old Switzerland international

Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl says he is hopeful that the club will keep ahold of midfielder Granit Xhaka.

The 23-year-old is reportedly generating interest from Arsenal and Liverpool, with Kop chiefs willing to smash their transfer record to sign the Swiss midfielder, who has scored three league goals for his club this season.

Xhaka’s father, Ragip, who also acts as his agent, has admitted that “several big clubs” were inquiring about his services with his fine form also attracting the attention of Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

“There are always situations where every club has to think of each option,” Eberl told German television.

“It [a possible sale of Xhaka] depends partly on our sporting success. It depends on the performances of Granit and of course on the price.

“As of today we are glad that he is with us and hope that he stays for a long time.”

No price tag on Swiss youngster

Eberl has suggested that the club don’t have a specific fee in mind in which they will feel forced to let the Swiss man go, saying: “There’s no number [a price threshold] for me.”

£37.6 million is a favoured figure that is rumoured to be the starting price for the midfielder, who has been likened to Germany legend Bastian Schweinsteiger, although his temper is a characteristic that can hinder his otherwise impressive footballing ability.

It would be delving back into a familiar market if Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was to make a move for Xhaka. However, the attraction of Champions League football could tempt the Swiss to Arsene Wenger’s Gunners or Bayern Munich.
