Newcastle sign Jordan Lukaku

According to a report in Guardian, Newcastle United have signed Lazio left-back Jordan Lukaku on loan for the rest of this season.

The 24-year-old, brother of Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku, will arrive at St. James’ Park for the remainder of this season.  Newcastle have an option to buy him on a permanent deal come the summer transfer window.

Lukaku has been at Lazio since 2016, but struggled in the early parts of this season due to a knee injury. As a result, he hasn’t featured much for Simone Inzaghi’s men making only one league start.

The Belgian is such an important signing for Newcastle as it covers their vacant left-back slot. Paul Dummett was the regular in that spot, but the Welshman has struggled for injuries this season. The hamstring issue keeps recurring, forcing the manager to change the system and shoe-horn a player at left wing-back.

Rafa Benitez switched his system to three at the back, with Matt Ritchie at left wing-back. While this solution has worked for few games, it cannot be considered as a regular option for the rest of this season.

Hence, signing Jordan Lukaku is fantastic for the club. He is a rapid player who loves marauding forward from fullback, and also be secured defensively. He can deliver accurate crosses in the box, something which would please striker Salomon Rondon.

Having the Belgian in the team would free up Ritchie to play in his favoured right wing position.
