The striker returns to Italy on loan.

Roma have signed Croatia forward Nikola Kalinic from Atletico Madrid on loan for the rest of the season, the Serie A club said on Monday.

After various weeks of rumors and negotiations, Atletico Madrid have temporarily released one of their players.

AS Roma are delighted to announce the signing of forward Nikola Kalinic on a season-long loan deal. The Croatian forward joins the Giallorossi from La Liga side Atletico Madrid until 30 June 2020″, the Giallorossi announced on their official website.

Roma will pay Atletico a €2 million fee for the loan, with an option to buy included at €9 million. The 31-year-old forward will be playing at his third Serie A club after Fiorentina and AC Milan.

“It feels great, because I am joining a big club,” Kalinic told the official club website. “I am proud to become part of this team and this club. Roma has big history and I am very happy to be here.”

“I have played in Serie A, I have experience of this league. There are lots of other top players and good forwards, like Edin Dzeko, who’s constantly performed in recent years. I hope to do just as well.”

After a pretty dull and unnoticeable career at Hadjuk Split, Sibenik, Blackburn Rovers and Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, in 2015, he joined the Viola, scoring 33 goals in a total of 84 games, impressing fellow Serie A side AC Milan with his performances. Just two seasons later, he left to join them, but inexplicably failed to deliver as he managed to net only 6 times in 41 matches across all competitions.

Kalinic was sent home from last year’s World Cup after refusing to come on as a substitute in Croatia’s opening game against Nigeria.
