Brennan Johnson has been acquired by Tottenham Hotspur for £47.5 million from Nottingham Forest

After Harry Kane left Tottenham last month, head coach Ange Postecoglou made the Wales international his top goal. He eventually signed the teenage forward after the transfer deadline had passed. Johnson ended his lengthy affiliation with Forest and signed a contract with Tottenham that will last until the summer of 2029.

Following in his father David’s footsteps, versatile forward Johnson made his Forest debut in 2019. He later made 108 appearances and scored 29 goals for the team where he spent his formative years. Former Lincoln loanee Johnson played a significant role in the club’s promotion to the Premier League in 2022 before scoring eight goals to lead them to the top flight’s survival last season after Steve Cooper’s arrival at the City Ground.

Johnson signed a four-year contract with Forest last summer, but he was lured away for a fee of £47.5 million, with a 10% sell-on provision built into the deal. Johnson can play anywhere in the front three, so Forest did reject two offers from Brentford for him earlier in the window, but this deal will help them meet their Financial Fair Play obligations.

Under the leadership of new head coach Postecoglou, who has assumed the primary responsibility for transfers in the absence of a director of football, Johnson’s arrival brings to a close a hectic summer of incomings for Tottenham. The Australian said on Friday that Spurs were nearing a decision on a successor to Fabio Paratici, who left the position in April. On the day of the transfer deadline, Johnson was the sole player to join Tottenham after bids for Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher and Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly fell through.

Before allowing any more entering players, Spurs had to cut their roster. Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez were unable to obtain loan moves away, despite defenders Japhet Tanganga and Sergio Reguilon leaving on that basis for Augsburg and Manchester United, respectively. While Tanguy Ndombele and Bryan Gil remained at Tottenham, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg declined a proposal from Fulham and subsequent negotiations with Atletico Madrid fell through.
