Patrik Berger urges Caoimhin Kelleher to depart Liverpool

Former Liverpool player Patrik Berger has urged talented goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to seek greener pastures as the summer transfer window approaches.

Kelleher, who has shown his potential in recent games owing to Alisson’s injury, has won praise for his performances, particularly in the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea.

However, Berger believes that with Alisson’s imminent return, Kelleher’s chances of regaining the starting spot are low. With only two years left on his contract, the summer presents an ideal opportunity for Liverpool to consider potential bids for the 25-year-old shot-stopper.

“Jurgen can rotate players and change the formation to fit certain players in there. With keepers, it is just different,” Berger, who won the FA Cup and UEFA Cup during his time with the Reds, told Premier League odds.

“Alisson is number one, so as a number two you don’t get that many games. But Kelleher has kept us in so many games since he has come in. Thanks to him, we are where we are, because he has saved us so many points already this season.

“He is definitely a number one keeper in the Premier League somewhere, I would love him to stay at Liverpool, but he would be looking to go somewhere and play.

“It’s a waste of time if you’re just sitting on the bench, so I don’t know what the contract situation is, but he has had the taste of being number one and he is too good to be a number two in my opinion.”

Berger’s approach stresses the competitive nature of top-flight football and the need for players to gain consistent playing time.

Given Kelleher’s outstanding performances, Berger feels Alisson’s pedigree and experience will see him restored as Klopp’s first choice.

The former Liverpool midfielder’s suggestion is in line with the career goals of ambitious players like as Kelleher, who may value opportunities for consistent game time over acting as a backup option.

As talk over Kelleher’s future grows, all eyes are on the goalkeeper as he evaluates his options ahead of the summer transfer window.
