Boss insists win was not down to red card

Mauricio Pochettino has said that Tottenham’s 4-1 win at Southampton was not down to the 2nd half dismissal of Nathan Redmond and his side dominated the Saints for the majority of the game anyway.

Spurs were 2-1 up in the second half when the Redmond penalty incident occured, and Pochettino believes his team were already on course for victory.

“It was not a key action to change the game because in that moment, we dominated the game, we created a lot of chances,” Pochettino said.

“It was difficult to see from my position but we deserve more than Southampton. We played better, it’s a very fair result.”

Spurs travel next to Watford on New Years Day before hosting leaders Chelsea at White Heart Lane, where they will hope to close the gap between themselves and the top.

“Yes, why not? It’s true the Premier League is very tough now, and all the big clubs, the sides are fighting at the top,” Pochettino said.

“It is a completely different Premier League this year. For us it’s important, we had a very good year for us last season, 71 points, and towards the end, we were still fighting for big things.”
