French international defender Raphael Varane has revealed he came close to joining Manchester United in the summer, but felt it was best to stay at Real Madrid.

Varane wasn’t a nailed on first team regular at the Bernabeu last season, increasing the likelihood of a move to Old Trafford.

However he decided to stay and was rewarded with a new and improved six year contract with Los Blancos.

The 21 year old has played just over half of Madrid’s La Liga matches this season, but has featured in all six Champions League games.

Talking to French football programme Telefoot, he says he has no regrets about turning down United.

“We came close to an agreement with Manchester United,” he said.

“There was an interesting project on offer but I made a choice for my career and I think I can go even higher now.

“I’d be happy to tell myself I did the best I could and went as far as I could during my career.”
