Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has been cherry picked by Real Madrid to become the long term successor to Iker Casillas.

De Gea’s outstanding performances in the last 12 months have clearly caught the eye of the European champions, having made some vital saves at vital times this season.

The Sun reports that Real are looking to buy the Spanish goalkeeper next summer for a cut price deal, with his current contract running out in 2016.

A move would see De Gea return to the Spanish capital, United having bought him from Real’s city rivals Atletico.

Despite doubts about his stature when he first moved to England, the Spaniard’s improvement has been meteoric, culminating in him being named last season’s player of the year at Old Trafford.

With no guarantee of Champions League football next season, De Gea is keen to move to a club with domestic and European aspirations in the very near future.

Louis van Gaal has already admitted that his project at United is not a quick fix.
