Striker insists he made the decision to leave – not Jose Mourinho
Everton star Romelu Lukaku has revealed why he chose to leave Chelsea, and he’s reiterated the fact it was his choice to leave the club and not Jose Mourinho’s.
The 22-year-old spent a couple of seasons out on loan away from Stamford Bridge, with one year at West Brom and the other year at Everton.
Following a successful loan spell at Goodison Park, Roberto Martinez decided to sign the striker permanently and willingly paid a club-record fee of around ÂŁ28million.
A lot of talk came after the sale, with Mourinho claiming it was his decision to sell Lukaku because he didn’t think he was ready for first-team football at Chelsea.
However, Lukaku has spoken out about the move and he’s admitted that it was his choice to quit the club.
Lukaku Defends Mourinho
He told the Express: “Choices have been made by me. By me. Not by them.
“Everyone says it is Mourinho’s fault, but it is not his fault because I made the decision. I went to his office to ask if I could go.
“He was the first one to say, ‘Good luck.’ When I signed the deal (at Everton) at 11 o’clock, I got a text message on my old BlackBerry.
“It said: ‘Good luck, do your best and I will see you next season.’
“He was the first, nobody knows that and that is why for me he gets immense respect.
“It is really sad he has to go.”
