Rudiger believes that Chelsea are out of the title race

Chelsea suffered their first home defeat under Maurizio Sarri and their first to Leicester at home in 18 years as the Blues went down 1-0 to the Foxes in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Blues looked in total control of the game until Jamie Vardy broke the deadlock early in the second half. Chelsea had lots of time left to restore parity but the Blues failed to capitalise on their chances.

The 1-0 defeat also marked Chelsea’s second loss in their last four Premier League outings and Sarri’s men fell 11 points behind Liverpool at the top of the table. Arsenal closed the gap on the Blues after beating Burnley 3-1 though Chelsea hold the fourth spot on the virtue of a superior goal difference.

And centre-back Antonio Rudiger was furious with his teammates after that 1-0 loss on Saturday. The 25-year-old believes that they are not realistic title contenders anymore and a top-four finish would be a good enough result for the club.

“It’s a disaster. We don’t talk about the title any more,” he said. “If we can’t win these games, we can’t compete.”

Near the half-way point of the season, the German defender spoke about shifting the team’s focus on qualifying for next year’s Champions League.

“We only talk now about top four. Maybe it’s a lack of mentality. Stupid.”
