Sturridge’s Liverpool future in doubt

The England international has been reduced to a restricted role at Anfield this campaign

Daniel Sturridge could be facing the Anfield exit with Jurgen Klopp looking to draft in a new number nine during the January transfer window.

Liverpool could be without summer signing Sadio Mane for a month during the new year, when the Senegal international heads to the Africa Cup of Nations, and wants to ensure the club’s goal-filled start to the campaign remains in his absence.

However, despite having Sturridge and Divock Origi available on the bench, it seems Klopp is looking for alternative options that would help to further bolster Liverpool’s attack, leaving 27-year-old Sturridge’s future in some doubt.

Roberto Firmino has been preferred as the Reds’ central option so far this campaign, and has performed to good effect. Although, Sturridge has managed six goals in 14 games for both club and country.

The Liverpool striker scored England’s first in a 3-0 World Cup qualifying win against Scotland, and has finally overcome an injury problem that has hampered him during his Reds career to date.

Sturridge has yet to net a league goal for Liverpool this campaign, and with Firmino, Mane and Philippe Coutinho leading Klopp’s menacing attack, it remains to be seen if and when the England striker finally gets his break.

Liverpool head to Southampton after the international break, with the opportunity to consolidate their position at the summit of the Premier League.
