An FC Barcelona scout has revealed that the club was close to signing Chelsea goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, earlier in his career.

The Belgium shot-stopper is enjoying his first-team role at Stamford Bridge, after spending three-years out on loan at Atletico Madrid, but according to reports in Spain, he was close to joining Barcelona from Genk.

However, Courtois ended up joining The Blues in 2011, before sending him out on loan for three years.

Jose Mourinho gave Courtois the number-one jersey at the beginning of the season over veteran, Petr Cech, but according to a Barca scout, Courtois was ready to join Barca.

“Courtois was looking forward to joining the club. At that time (2011) could have signed for 3 to 4 million euros.”

“He was ready to sign with the first team, Barça B, or go on loan. A month later he went to Chelsea.”
