Arsenal in pole position to sign league winner

A transfer clause in Jamie Vardy’s contract means that Liverpool are set to miss out on the striker.

Vardy’s ÂŁ20million release clause was activated by Arsenal yesterday, but it’s a clause only available to Champions League clubs, meaning Liverpool, depsite being ready to offer Vardy a better contract, cannot make a move now.

Arsene Wenger was at England’s friendly with Portugal on Thursday evening and saw Vardy start up front for the Three Lions.

It is believed that the date of June 3 is significant to the release clause, and would mean Arsenal need to rush to get it done in the next few days.

Roy Hodgson has made it clear he does not want any of his side undergoing medicals or entering transfer discussions once the side has left for France.
