Spanish giants Barcelona had made a formal £10m bid for the unsettled Belgian this week but a £15m offer from Van Gaal’s Manchester United has knocked the deal into the Red Devils’ favour.
Both clubs have had the Arsenal skipper on their radar throughout the summer, and it was Barcelona who looked set to acquire Vermaelen’s services but United may have won the race for the centre back.
After giving up on the signing of Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund, United seem confident that they will snap up a deal in the coming weeks for Thomas Vermaelen.
Arsene Wenger would’ve preferred to not have to sell to a fellow Premier League side but with the extra money, it may be a tough deal to turn down.
