Van Gaal admits mistake

Louis van Gaal believes he made a mistake during his early days in charge of Manchester United, reports The Sun newspaper.

The Dutch manager, who led the Netherlands to the World Cup semi finals in the summer, told the press to give him three months before they formed an opinion on him.

But now van Gaal, reckons he may have been a tad optimistic. “It was my stupid fault I think, for mentioning an exact period (of three months). Now I have to answer lots of questions about the three months. I have belief in my philosophy and Manchester United has belief in that philosophy too. That is why I am here. It maybe needs more time. Who knows, maybe the match against West Brom is the start of a new period.”

United travel to The Hawthorns on Monday, having made an indifferent start to the season. Some great attacking football and good results have been marred slightly by some erratic moments, including throwing a two goal lead away against Leicester last month.

The Red Devils found themselves in the top four over the international break for the first time in over a year despite these mistakes and now the optimism surrounding van Gaal’s project at Old Trafford is starting to build.

United are in fifth position in the League, with a game in hand over the teams around them following Saturday’s matches.
