Mourinho defends his managerial record

0

The Chelsea boss claims this season shouldn’t be seen as a failure should it end without a trophy

Chelsea saw their last major hope for a trophy ended by Atletico Madrid on Wednesday leaving the Premier League as their only option.

If the Blues are to claim a piece of silverware this season, they will have to win their two remaining games and both Liverpool and Manchester City will have to drop points.

Mourinho went on to recall his records as a manager to defend himself.

“I’m going to tell you something — a bit of the history of my career,” Mourinho said.

“My career reached, against Inter, the maximum you can reach when you win everything. In 2010, I won everything: Scudetto, Coppa Italia, the Champions League.

“After that, this is the history of my career. In the first season [after 2010], I won the [Spanish] cup against the best team in the world [Barcelona] and finished second in the league after the best team in the world, and I lost the Champions League semifinal against the best team in the world.

“The next season, I was champion against the best team in the world, the champions of the records — 100 points, 126 goals, the record team — and we won that league.

“We lost the Champions League semifinal on penalties [against Bayern Munich] in a day when two of the best penalty takers in football missed, Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo. And that was a ‘bad’ season.

“In the third season, we won every match against the best team in the world — in the league, the Super Cup, the cup, at the Bernabeu, at Barcelona — we won everything against them. We won the Super Cup. We lost the league, finished second. And we lost the Champions League semifinal by one goal [against Borussia Dortmund].

“And the fourth season, which is this one, and probably the first where I don’t win a single trophy — unless we win the league — I go to the Champions League semifinal and fight for the title until the last minute of the season. So these are the four bad seasons of my career.

“It went wrong by going year after year like nobody else did. You arrive at a level where finishing second is not good, losing a semifinal is not good. So I’m proud of that. Guilty of that.”

Arsène Wenger’s plans for the future include Lukas Podolski and Thomas Vermaelen

0

Arsène Wenger has told Lukas Podolski and Thomas Vermaelen that he is not willing to sanction transfers for them, as he placed the emphasis on maintaining Arsenal’s squad stability in the summer and adding quality rather than quantity.

The manager is preoccupied with finishing the season with a flourish and his team could ensure a top-four place and a 17th consecutive Champions League qualification with a home win over West Bromwich Albion on Sunday . They might not need that if Everton were to lose or draw at home to Manchester City on Saturday.

There is also excitement at Arsenal about the FA Cup final against Hull City on 17 May, when the club could win their first trophy since 2005.

Wenger has admitted that the preparations for the transfer window have begun but he fears that the World Cup will represent an obstacle to early business.

Wenger said he had “people around me who start to look” for new signings and he predicted a “busy” summer. “But the main thing for us will be to keep the stability because we feel we are close,” Wenger added. “We want to add something that makes us even stronger but number-wise, it will not be massive. Two or three? Yes.

“From my experience, the World Cup years have always been very quiet until the end of the World Cup, with no players reachable.

“I believe this year again you will have to wait until 15 July to start going.”

Gerrard to be offered new contract

0

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will be offered a new Anfield deal this summer.

Gerrard’s current contract is due to run out in the summer of 2015, but manager Rodgers wants the 33 year old to sign a new deal after a strong season in a new holding midfield role.

“Steven will be one we look to get a contract to in the summer,” Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo, “I believe Steven will play beyond 2015. He is a player who has really shown his qualities this season. He has dropped into a new position and played it seamlessly.”

“It’s one where he has been brilliant for me as a captain and as a player this season and I would like that to continue. His intelligence in the game is second to none. He is improving all the time. It’s one where he has been brilliant for me as a captain and as a player this season and I would like that to continue.”

Rodgers’ comments came after a tough week for the England midfielder, after his costly slip in Liverpool’s game against Chelsea put a real dent in Liverpool’s title hopes, who are now relying on a favour from city rivals Everton in order to get it back on track.

“Everyone had empathy for Steven,” Rodgers added. “The mistake obviously changed the course of the game and he was just unfortunate.”

“Steven was hurting like we all were but this is a player who has picked himself up after disappointments many times over his career here at Liverpool and he will do it again. He has carried this club throughout his career. There is no blame attached to him because he has been instrumental in where we are to this day and he will continue to be in the coming years.”

Liverpool themselves travel to Crystal Palace on Monday night, hoping to still be within a sniff of their long-awaited title. A win for Everton against top of the league Man City would put their destiny back into their own hands, and maybe deliver the title to Anfield for the first time in 24 years.

Liverpool to renew Micah Richards interest

0

Manchester City defender Micah Richards is back on Liverpool’s radar as he looks for a new club this summer.

Richards is looking likely to leave The Etihad this summer after is was revealed he turned down a new 5 year deal at the club, and now Brendan Rodgers is planning a summer swoop after a loan move was turned down by City in January. Rodgers is attracted to Richards due to the facts he can play both at right-back and centre back.

City will be looking to gain around £8million for Richards, despite the fact that he only has 12 months left on his current deal. Manuel Pelligrini seems to be quite keen on keeping the 25 year old, given the fact that he meets the Premier League homegrown criteria.

However, the prospect of losing Richards is becoming more and more likely, and City could be in danger of losing him for free next summer if he doesn’t sign a new contract. City are rumoured to be lining up a move for Arsenal’s Bacary Sagna in order to replace Richards.

Mourinho has admitted that Chelsea’s football has been boring this season

0

Jose Mourinho has admitted he has made Chelsea dull to watch.

But he insisted it was the only way of being sure the Blues would qualify for the Champions League. Mourinho revealed he changed his side’s tactics after they shipped six goals in four days at Sunderland and Stoke in December.

Chelsea could finish the season empty-handed after their midweek European exit, with criticism raining down on Mourinho after he “parked two buses” in the victory over Liverpool last Sunday .

But Mourinho said: “At a certain moment of the season I made the decision to stop our evolution in style and philosophy of play and go the only way, with this team and these players, we could get results.

“I felt we had no conditions to go as far as we did in the Champions League or in the Premier League if we didn’t transform our style of play.

“There came a moment when I felt it was dangerous and that there was a big risk that we could be out of the top four.

“If we hadn’t gone for a bit more stability and development of a certain philosophy, it was a big risk. So from that point the team became more strategical and less intuitive, because we went for results.”

Mourinho opted for an off-hand dig at his main London rival, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, as he added: “It’s not a cup; I don’t want to get a bonus for finishing in the top four. No way, no way. The moment I think like that I’m in trouble.”

But he was less siubtle in his criticism of Eden Hazard was far more up-front, despite insisting he was unconcerned that the Belgian had complained Chelsea were “not set up to play football”.

Mourinho added: “This is normally the kind of comment you get from players who can’t resolve a problem like we had with the first goal (against Atletico).

“Against Atletico in Madrid, Willian played on the left side and Ashley Cole was protected all game. Against Liverpool, Schurrle played on the left and a dangerous player like Glen Johnson was completely under control.

“Eden is the kind of player who is not so mentally ready to look back at his left-back and lay down his life for him. If you see Atletico’s first goal, you understand where the mistake was and why we conceded that goal.

“That doesn’t mean I want him to change but he’s not the kind of player who is ready to sacrifice himself 100 per cent for the team and his mates.”

Mourinho, though, insisted Chelsea who can still win the league by beating Norwich and Cardiff if both Liverpool and Manchester City blow up will be a different proposition next term.

The Blues remain confident of landing £32million Atletico striker Diego Costa and Mourinho said: “We have created the right basis for next year.

“But there have been games where we’ve created 12 chances, only scored one and were always in trouble because we didn’t have a killer profile.”

Muller ready to quit

0

German international, Thomas Muller, is ready to quit Bayern Munich to be part of manager Louis Van Gaal’s next adventure, which is expected to be at Manchester United.

The versatile german has become increasingly frustrated at the amount of playing time he has been given at Bayern this season. This growing frustration has caused Muller to look elsewhere to see where his future lies, and it seems that he would like to be reunited with his former boss, Louis Van Gaal.

Van Gaal has been heavily linked with the managerial position at Manchester United, with some reports suggesting that a deal has already been agreed. Muller was given his debut by Van Gaal in the die Roten side back in 2009, and with Van Gaal keen on Muller, the German could become one of the manager’s most wanted in the next transfer window.

Despite Muller’s disappointment at Bayern, he has managed to score 12 goals in 29 games for the club, but with the arrival of Robert Lewandowski in the summer, Muller could become lower down in the pecking order in Pep Guardiola’s squad next season.

Mourinho admits he has two players he is targeting for summer signings

0

Atletico Madrid and Spain striker Costa was the architect of the Blues’ Champions League semi-final exit earlier in the week and rumours suggest Mourinho is keen to add the 25-year-old to his squad for next season.

But while Mourinho confirmed his interest in bringing at least one top-class striker to Stamford Bridge during the summer transfer window, he stopped short of discussing any specific targets.

The Portuguese said: “The only thing I can see is that the market is closed. It opens as you know in the summer.

Chelsea will be quite calm and quiet during that period. They won’t be the noisy team selling and buying, buying and selling. We aren’t going to be that kind of club.

“We are going to do, I would say, a couple of critical signings. Is a striker a target for us? Yes. Is Diego (Costa) a good player? Yes, he is but he’s an Atletico Madrid player so I cannot say much.”

Mourinho caused controversy earlier in the campaign when he was secretly filmed questioning the aptitude of his current strikeforce, which includes the likes of Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba.

Mourinho is confident Chelsea will be in a better shape to win trophies next term after a ‘transitional’ season at Stamford Bridge.

And he has also questioned Eden Hazard’s team ethic in the wake of Chelsea’s midweek Champions League exit.

“Eden is the kind of player that is not so mentally ready to look back to his left-back and to leave his life for him.

“If you see the first goal of Atletico you completely understand where the mistake was and why we conceded that goal.

“The perfect team at the top level cannot make these kinds of mistakes.”

While Mourinho has praised Hazard’s willingness to work at times this season, he says there is still a lot of work for him to do.

“I’m not happy,” Mourinho said. “I speak all season and I try to improve him all season.”

Oscar’s Football Nightmare Decision

0

The 22 year-old Brazil and Chelsea midfielder Oscar will take precautions in order to stay fit for the World Cup. Even if means sacrificing the biggest domestic league trophy.

Oscar has been dealing with a little injury problem in the build up to the Liverpool game and has not featured in the Blues first 11 yet. I’m not playing because I felt a pain due to an injury to the abductor,’ Oscar stated in a recent interview.

Oscar has made 29 caps for the senior brazil side scoring 9 goals in total. He was also in the squad that won Olympic Silver at the 2012 London Games.

With Chelsea just 2 points behind league leaders Liverpool and with 2 games left to play will Oscar choose risking his fitnees to guide Chelsea to a League Title or abandon the team in search of the most covented football prize out there. The World Cup.

Mourinho slates Hazard

0

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has blasted his winger, Eden Hazard, following a lacklustre performance in the Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid.

The Belgium international winger was critisized by his manager following the defeat, and Hazard started a war of words following comments about his style of play.

But Jose Mourinho aimed a sly dig at the youngster.

‘I listen to the interview, the words are completely different than some media was saying,’ said the Blues boss.

‘The context is completely transformed. There was nothing critical in what he [Hazard] said, they were the same words he had in relation to the Belgium side a couple of weeks ago. There is nothing there.

Mourinho continued.

‘Normally we have these comments from players like him, from players that can’t resolve a problem like we had in the first goal.

‘Eden is the kind of player that is not so mentally ready to protect his left-back and give his life to him.

‘If you look at the first goal against Atletico [on Wednesday] you can understand where the mistake was.

‘When the comments come from a player like Eden, it’s normal because he is not 100 per cent ready to sacrifice himself for the team and for his mates.

‘I’m not happy [about that], I’ve tried to improve him all season.’

Could this be the beginning of the end for Hazard at Chelsea? with PSG interested.

Owen reveals all

0

Micheal Owen has opened up and told Sportlobster why he left his boyhood club, Liverpool.

The former England international, left Liverpool to join Real Madrid in 2004, despite becoming a fans favourtie at Anfield. With intentions to rejoin Liverpool later on, Owen opted for moves to the likes of Newcastle United, Manchester United and  Stoke City.

Owen has revealed that he didnt intend to leave liverpool saying: “It was never my intention to leave Liverpool,” Owen told Sportlobster. “I had always thought I’d be a one club man

“I was in America on a pre-season tour when my phone rang with the news. My agent told me that Real Madrid had been in touch and wanted to sign me. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

“After a week of changing my mind one way and another, I decided that if I didn’t give it a go I could regret it for the rest of my life. Like Ian Rush before me, the plan was that I could always come back (well that was my plan)”

Owen never went back to Liverpool and while he regrets not having a second spell at the Merseyside club, he looks back at his time at the Bernabeu fondly.

“It was a season I will never forget,” he added. “A great experience both on and off the field. Wearing that famous white kit, strutting my stuff at an iconic stadium and sharing a pitch with the likes of Figo, Ronaldo, Beckham, Raul, Carlos and Zidane was the stuff of dreams.

“As I thought, I was able to adapt my game to a different style and playing 43 games and notching 19 goals in the process was a record to be proud of.

“The only drawback from my decision to head to Madrid was, that after a year in Spain, I didn’t manage to rejoin my boyhood team.”

Chelsea eye Gotze deal

0

Chelsea are considering a summer swoop for Bayern Munich midfielder, Mario Gotze.

Gotze admitted this week that he has grown in frustration at the amount of game time he has had. The German feels that he has not been given enough playing time to justify his £30 million pound price tag when he joined Bayern Munich, after leaving rivals Borussia Dortmund.

Speaking to German Media, the player said: . Of course I’m not happy,’ ‘I want to win back the trust of the coach to play more.’

These comments have alerted Chelsea, who have been long-term admirers of Gotze, with reports suggesting that the club are lining up a move in the summer transfer window.

It seems that Chelsea will not be alone in their attempts to sign the midfielder, with Arsenal and Napoli also keen on Gotze.

Mourinho: Costa is a target

0

Chelsea boss, Jose Mourinho, has kept his cards close to his chest and has been reluctant to confirm whether Chelsea have signed forward, Diego Costa, from Atletico Madrid.

Reports suggest that Chelsea have sealed a £32 million pound deal, with Costa set to earn £200,000 a week at Stamford Bridge. But in a recent interview, Mourinho was unwilling to confirm or deny that any deal had been struck, but admitted that Costa is a target for the club.

‘The market is closed. It opens in the summer,’ he said. ‘Chelsea will be calm and quiet during that period, we are not going to be the noisy team buying and selling and selling and buying.

‘We are going to do a couple of critical signings.‘Is he [Costa] a striker a target for us? Yes, we never denied that. Is Diego a good player? He is but he is an Atletico Madrid player, so we cannot say much.’ said the manager.

Costa, who knocked out Chelsea in the Champions League on Wednesday, has scored 27 goals in La Liga this season, with his current club, Atletico Madrid two wins away from winning the title.

Aspas set to leave Liverpool

0

Liverpool winger Iago Aspas is set to leave Liverpool in the summer, with a return to Celta Vigo on the cards.

Aspas has somewhat failed to make the grade at Anfield, falling behind the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling in the pecking order.

And Aspas, aged 26, has only featured 14 times this season, and looks set to retun to Spain with his former club.

Spanish local Newspaper have published that Celta are close to agreeing a deal with Liverpool.

Barcelona find a replacement for Carles Puyol in Daniel Agger

0

The Catalan club have suffered a disappointing season both domestically and in Europe and are planning to overhaul their squad during the transfer window.

Liverpool’s Agger has been targeted by Barcelona in the past and they are reportedly now set to rekindle their interest in the 29-year-old.

Barca stalwart Carles Puyol will leave the Nou Camp at the end of the season, leaving Tata Martino chasing at least one new centre-half.

And Agger’s experience means he has been pinpointed as the ideal replacement for the outgoing Spaniard.

Agger has made just 17 starts for the Reds in all competitions this term, with injury and squad rotation both playing a part in his lack of regular involvement.

And that could mean Brendan Rodgers will be willing to let the Dane depart Anfield should the right offer come in and allow the Liverpool boss to add to his defensive options ahead of next season, when he will also have Champions League fixtures to contend with.
