Rivals prepare shock bid

0

It has emerged today that Merseyside rivals Liverpool will make a shock move for Everton starlet Ross Barkley in the summer.

It is understood that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is willing to break the clubs transfer record in order to secure the signature of the England youngster, with a bid of up to £38 million pounds to be tabled. However, Rodgers knows that this may become more difficult, as a whole host of clubs have been linked with Barkley over the past couple of months, such as rivals Manchester United and Chelsea.

With Champions League qualification, Liverpool will certainly be willing to strengthen in the summer, and it seems Ross Barkley (who is an Everton supporter) is one of thier main targets. Everton boss, Roberto Martinez, insisted earlier in the season that Barkley would be going nowhere and Everton would reject any bids, with Martinez hoping that the midfielder will sign a new long-term contract. But if Everton do fail to qualify for next years Champions League, a huge offer will be hard for the Toffees to turn down, especially if all the clubs mentioned to Barkley’s name start to bid.

Rodgers is keen to make Liverpool’s title challenge a big step forward for the club, and wants to make this challenge possible next year aswell. The club is not shy to spend money on English talent, with Liverpool smashing their transfer record on Andy Carroll for £35 million, with the player eventually to be sold to West Ham for £20 million. But it seems that Barkley does have a very bright future, with 5 goals to his name in his first season in the top flight and has also had a string of high quality performances when playing for Everton. If the move were to happen, it would be no such gamble it seems.

Paris Saint-Germain duo keen on Chelsea move

0

Paris Saint-Germain duo Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi are reportedly interested in completing a Summer move to Chelsea.

It is being reported that Jose Mourinho would have to offer up to £80million in order to sign BOTH of the PSG frontmen, but The Blues boss has made it publically clear that he wants new strikers in the Summer in order to bring the glory days back to Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho has consistently questioned his strikers; Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba, and he has openly admitted that there will be changes at the end of the season, and Cavani and Lavezzi could be in-line for a switch.

The Uruguayan front-man has been left annoyed since joining PSG from Napoli due to being deployed as a left-winger rather than a striker, while it’s also believed that Lavezzi could be keen on quitting Paris as well.

The only stumbling block for the move is the cost for Roman Abramovich and Chelsea.

Raheem Sterling set for bumper deal

0

Liverpool midfielder Raheem Sterling is set to be rewarded for his fine form with a new bumper deal at the club.

The young English winger has been superb for the club since the New Year, and has combined well with front-two Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, which could be the partnership that guides them to their first ever Premier League title.

The 19-year-old, who had a massive falling out with Brendan Rodgers when he first arrived at the club, has changed his attitude on-and-off the pitch since then, and has even move away from the city centre to stop him going on big nights out.

Executives at the club are keen to reward Sterling for his improvement despite him penning a new deal just under two years ago.

The winger is currently earning around £30k-a-week, but it’s believed that will be increased when the new deal is presented to him.

Chelsea and Arsenal race to sign young Everton defender John Stones

0

Chelsea have joined the race for Everton defender John Stones but will face a difficult task prising him away.

Arsenal also have an interest in the 19-year-old, who is being tipped as an outsider for Roy Hodgson’s World Cup training squad.

Stones was bought from Barnsley by David Moyes in January 2013 for a £3million fee, heading off interest from then-Wigan manager Roberto Martinez and Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

Although he was playing as a right back, Moyes and Martinez recognised Stones would become a centre back and he is showing how in his performances of late.

Arsenal have watched the England U21 defender closely and like his ability to bring the ball out of defence which has come to the fore this season.

Chelsea have good youth players coming through but Stones is ahead of them after gaining Premier League experience.

Both clubs would like to make an offer but Everton are not looking to sell any of their stars as they continue to make giant strides towards Champions League qualification.

Whereas in the past they would be vulnerable to any sizeable bid, the club is utilising increased TV money to stabilise and build for the future.

Ross Barkley is also inevitably wanted by Premier League rivals but Everton believe the player wants to stay at Goodison for at least another two years before taking stock of where to take his career.

By that time they hope to have added more than Champions League qualification to convince him to stay.

Steven Gerrard believes it would have all been for nothing if they don’t take the title

0

Liverpool became favourites to win the Barclays Premier League after their 3-2 win over Manchester City on Sunday but Gerrard fears that ‘nobody will remember us’ if the Reds falter in the run-in.

Gerrard was overcome after the City game. It had been a hugely emotional occasion, as Anfield had paid its respects to the victims of the Hillsborough disaster to mark its 25th anniversary.

The 33-year-old club captain dedicated the triumph over City to the 96 Liverpool fans who died at Hillsborough and he is also on a mission to deliver the club’s first Premier League title in this symbolic year.

It is why Gerrard has demanded that Liverpool accord Norwich the same respect due to AC Milan and insisted Sunday’s trip to Carrow Road will be the biggest game his team-mates have ever played in.

‘Every game is getting bigger,’ Gerrard said. ‘Manchester City was always going to be huge because they are in the race with us but Norwich now become Manchester City.

‘Norwich become Chelsea. Norwich become Manchester United. That’s how big it is. We have to treat Norwich City like we treated AC Milan in 2005 (in the Champions League final).

‘We can’t think about what colour shirts Norwich are wearing and the personnel in them.

‘We have to treat them like the best team in the world. Ten wins in the Premier League is remarkable but you get nothing for it.

‘You get a pat on the back. We’ve all had them (pats on the back) but they come and go.

‘What is key as a footballer is getting something to show for all the hard work. We have been on a magnificent run.

‘We could win 13 on the spin but lose the last one and we get nothing.

‘Nobody will remember it. The only way people will remember it is if we go on and win it.

‘We have got to forget where we are and forget what we have done. We have just got to focus and prepare for Norwich.

‘We have to treat it like it is the last game of all our careers. That is the mentality.’

Managing the heightened expectations and frayed nerves of Liverpool’s fans may be one of the biggest issues for manager Brendan Rodgers’s Liverpool squad in the final four games and Gerrard admitted the pressure is emotionally draining if it is not handled properly.

He was in tears as the final whistle sounded at Anfield on Sunday and Gerrard explained: ‘It was just a release. It is a tough week, preparing for these matches.

‘There are long days going into them. Everyone knows personally how much I want it.

‘The reason I was so emotional was because of when the game fell. It wasn’t just because it was a big match in our season – it was because this week is meaning more than football for
everyone associated with Liverpool.

‘I’ve just got to stay calm, relax and take each game as it comes. I’m trying to do that but it’s difficult to control my emotion.

‘In my spare time, I’m not sitting around thinking about it.

‘I’m watching the TV, spending time with my kids and my friends to take my mind off it.

‘I’d love to play the remaining four games in the next four days but it is not possible.

‘I have to manage the time well and make sure that I’m not wasting unnecessary energy.’

Gerrard lost his cousin, Jon-Paul Gilhooley, at Hillsborough. He was just 10 years old, the youngest of the tragedy’s 96 victims.

‘I’m speaking on behalf of everyone when I say the win was dedicated to the victims and families of Hillsborough,’ Gerrard said.

‘All the squad will be present at the Memorial Service to pay our respects, as we should.’

Inter Milan confirm interest in Chelsea striker Fernando Torres

0

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres is a target of Inter Milan, according to the Serie A club’s general director Marco Fassone.

Torres has been strongly linked with a move away from the Blues’ outfit this summer despite having two years left on his contract with the London club.

Inter are looking to strengthen their attacking line this summer and the 30-year-old Torres is among the players the Nerazzurri are considering.

‘Will we sign Torres?’ Fassone said on www.inter.it.

‘You all know that some names have circulated (in the media) and even (club) president (Erick) Thohir has not made a mystery of the fact that they interest us.

‘Who will be the right candidate in the end has yet to be defined.’

Inter’s transfer market this summer will depend on whether the club qualify for the Europa League next season.

The Nerazzurri, who missed out on Europe this term, are fifth in the standings and currently hold the last Europa League qualifying spot with five games to go in Serie A.

‘It’s obvious that in the last few months, our club president has requested as an aim to return to Europe,’ Fassone said.

‘It would be problematic not to qualify for continental competition for a second straight year, not just for the work we are doing but also from a financial standpoint.’

Wenger not looking to repeat last summers transfer blunders

0

Arsenal will work on improving the squad ahead of next season is well underway as they look to complete their transfer business earlier than usual this summer.

The Gunners faltered in their attempts to strengthen their squad last summer; failing to close deals for numerous targets, including Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez.

The deadline day club record swoop for Mesut Ozil salvaged what was widely viewed as a mistake-ridden transfer window.

But there is a determination not to suffer the same frustrations this summer. The club are close to finalising their priority targets list, which will include a new striker, defensive midfielder, and two defenders.

Negotiations with clubs have already started, too, with Gunners chiefs having made contact with Real Madrid over Alvaro Morata and Schalke over attacking midfielder Julian Draxler. Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender is also a key target for Wenger.

‘We do spend time on next season, we are really focused and working very hard,’ admitted Wenger, whose side face West Ham tonight.

‘Every day we spend time on that.’

Petr Cech believes a lack of title experience within the Liverpool team will be their downfall

0

Cech says Jose Mourinho’s men must win all their remaining games to pip Liverpool and Manchester City to the title, said: ‘Nobody expected anything from Liverpool this season and they’re in contention it’s why they’ve been able to play without pressure so far.

‘But let’s see how they will cope when it comes to the last hurdle. They will have to jump over it. They have been doing remarkably well, but we are still around.’

The Chelsea goalkeeper says Chelsea need to raise their own game after making hard work of their 1-0 win over Swansea at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday.

However, in capitalising on City’s defeat on the same day at Liverpool, they are only two points off the lead.

‘Obviously we have to wait for one slip-up from City but if we win our games we have a chance,’ added Cech. ‘We have players who are used to playing big games.

‘We have just four games to play now and if we win all of our matches, then we will be there right to the end. We will try to win them all and then we’ll see where we’ll be.’

Vermaelen: We dug deep

0

Thomas Vermaelen has said that Arsenal’s penalty shootout win against Wigan can now lift them into a top four finish and silence Wegners critics.

The Arsenal captain has hailed the way his team didn’t lie down and admit defeat. He said: ‘There was a lot of talk about needing the result for a few different reasons, for the manager and showing we could fight and I think we did that,’ said Vermaelen. ‘It will give us a boost for the rest of the season.’ He added: ‘I’m very happy that we’ll go to the final, that’s why you play these games of course.‘It was a long game with extra-time and penalties, it’s never easy but it’s a good win.’

He has also hailed the performances of goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski after his spot-kick heroics. Vermaelen said: ‘Lukasz is an outstanding goalie, he works hard for it and he deserves this.’ But now Arsenal must re-focus for thier trip to Upton Park to face West Ham in order to fight for a top four finish.

Chelsea ready to offer Lukaku new deal as Man City still interested

0

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has lined up the Belgian forward as a potential replacement for Edin Dzeko, who looks set to depart The Etihad in the up coming market.

However, it now appears that Mourinho wants to keep the forward at Stamford Bridge, despite recent reports having suggested that the Blues boss was ready to let the striker leave the club.

Lukaku has enjoyed a fine season at Everton – scoring 13 league goals – and has played a key role in helping the Toffees challenge for the Champions League qualification places.

But now the striker could be the subject of a summer bid from Premier League giants Manchester City, who could make a bid of around £30 million in order to secure his services.

It remains to be seen as to whether Manchester City step up their interest in the Chelsea forward in the coming months, but it appears that Lukaku’s long term future is far from certain.

The striker has impressed many throughout the last couple of years, but he could still be on his way out of Stamford Bridge in the summer window.

Arsenal without EIGHT first-team players

0

Arsenal are feeling the effects of their FA Cup final victory now as they could head to West Ham on Tuesday night missing EIGHT first-team players! Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Aaron Ramsey, Lukas Podolski, Nacho Monreal, Kieran Gibbs, Tomas Rosicky and Laurent Koscielny are all doubts for the fixture this Tuesday.

Monreal is the unlikeliest of the eight to start, while Koscielny and Rosicky will undergo fitness tests before Arsene Wenger can decide whether they shall play any part in the game. The Gunners boss knows fatigue will also play a part but knows they cannot slip-up now they lie in 5th place and could miss out on Champions League football.

Wenger said: “I cannot give you complete team news because many of them have had to be checked today. We have plenty of uncertainties for muscular problems and fatigue. Who could be available who was not in the squad on Saturday, maybe Rosicky, we’ll have to test him today, maybe Koscielny, we’ll have to test him definitely today. There are plenty of uncertainties, I have to make my mind up late on.”

Podolski Frustration

0

Lukas Podolski admits to becoming increasingly frustrated at Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, at substituting him most games.

The last time Podolski was given 90 minutes of football was against German champions Bayern Munich in the Champions League second leg, and with himself being taken off for Olivier Giroud during Arsenal’s Fa Cup semi-final, this has sparked Podolski to come out publically with his anger.I play and in the last games, I always come out and of course you cannot be happy when you always go out after 60, 70 minutes,” he said. “When you go out and you are happy, you are not a footballer so of course I am not happy always to be substituted”. He then continued to add: “It’s the decision of the boss, he is the manager. He decides who comes in, who comes out, who are the first XI”,”It’s not always easy when you play for a big club but of course I am not happy to always come out and watch from outside. You cannot be happy with this situation.”

Podolski has also publically warned Wenger that it would be a ‘disaster’ for Arsenal to fail to qualify for next seasons Champions League. This agains seems to be Podolski trying to enforce his message of frustration at decisions that have been made by Arsene Wenger.

Antonio Valencia hit’s out at Moyes

0

Antonio Valencia has hit out at his lack of game time under David Moyes.

The Manchester United winger has started 18 league matches this season, but feels he could have made a bigger impact on their desperately disappointing campaign if the boss had shown more faith in him.

Valencia said of this season with the Reds: “I would like to have more minutes. I would like to have a more important role here. In fact, I would have liked to have more importance inside the team.

“But I have not been given the chance. I hope next season will be better for me as well as for Man United.”

Owen: “Arsenal in good shape”

0

Former Liverpool star Michael Owen believes Arsene Wenger’s side are exactly where they need to be in order to end their trophy woes.

Arsenal go into the final strong favourites following their semi-final win over holders Wigan and Owen acknowledges this is a huge chance for Arsenal and they just need to seize the moment, play good football and take home the FA Cup.

“If I was an Arsenal player I’d be really excited to have such a good opportunity to win the cup,” he told Goal: “They only have to play to their ability.

“I don’t go along with them not having a good mentality. I think they do and they’re doing exactly what they should be doing at the moment.

“They’re about the fourth or fifth best team in the Premier League and that’s exactly where they’re going to finish up. If they get fourth and win the cup it will be a good season for them.

“They’re punching exactly their weight and they’ve got a great chance to win the FA Cup. They just need to seize the moment.”

Owen also knows how important winning the FA could be in terms of lifting the atmosphere and the negativity surrounding the players. Although the Gunners need to keep developing their squad if they are to go on and achieve bigger and better things.

“It would be huge for them to win it because of how big the FA Cup is and because of how long it’s been since they won a trophy,” he added.

“In terms of it being a springboard, not really. They need to carry on developing their team and add a bit more quality if they want to compete for the title but this competition has really opened up for them and they’ll never get a better chance to win it.

“It would bring a nice bit of relief for Arsenal fans and a nice bit of cheer and, if they can wrap it up with coming fourth in the league, that will make it a good season for them.”

Merseyside revelling in footballing glory.

0

Over the last few years, Merseyside has somewhat suffered within regards of footballing glory, with Liverpool struggling to overcome both of the Manchester clubs, meanwhile, Everton seemed to be in the shadow of their own Merseyside rivals themselves.

However, this season has seen an upturn at both clubs, with both Liverpool and Everton in the upper echelons of the Premier League table, with Everton flying high in fourth, and Liverpool sitting pretty at the top of the table.

This optomism hasn’t been seen in the city for several years, with both sides in the shadow of Manchester United, but now, it is the Mersey clubs looking down at the Red Devils.

Following Liverpool’s thrilling 3-2 victory at home to Manchester City, the Reds are now in pole position to win their first League title since 1990, which would mean a first Premier League crown.

The Reds have played some brilliant football over the last ten months, with both Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge scoring 49 goals between them this season, in a strike partnership not seen at Anfield since the Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler era.

Rodgers has also brought through several young, hungry English players, with the likes of local lad John Flanagan, Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling all excelling in their respective positions, as Liverpool try at avenge 24 years without a League title.

The City has also been united in grief, with this year being 25 years since the Hillsborough disaster of 1989, in a tragic event in which 96 Liverpool supporters never returned home from an FA Cup tie in Sheffield against Nottingham Forest.

That poignant event in time has spurred the side on to some overwhelming results, with the Reds doing the double over Manchester United, which included a 3-0 win at Old Trafford.

They have also beat Tottenham Hotspur (4-0) and Arsenal (5-1) with Anfield becoming the fortress it once was again, with teams afraid to return to Anfield, in fear of a pasting.

Rodgers has also masterminded a new style of play, which the bubbly Northern Irish manager had learnt during his time as a coach, before a superb stint with Swansea City.

The capture of Simon Mignolet was also a massive coup, with the Belgium keeper becoming a real crowd favourite at Anfield, since signing from Sunderland in the summer.

The City can also boast about the Blue half, with Everton flying high in fourth, and at this moment, on  the verge of Champions League football for the first time in a decade.

Many supporters were somewhat bemused when long standing Chairman Bill Kenwright announced Roberto Martinez as the clubs new manager, with the Spaniard replacing David Moyes in the summer.

Martinez has started his Everton career superbly, and has took his FA Cup win with Wigan Athletic as a stepping stone for success at Goodison Park.

The Spaniard has brought in the likes of Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea, James McCarthy from Wigan Athletic, Gareth Barry from Manchester City, Gerard Deulofeu from Barcelona, Aiden MGeady from Spartak Moscow, and a few others, to create a real melting pot of enthusiasm at Goodison.

Martinez has also used the same tactics that won him an FA Cup title, with the Toffees keen to play attractive passing football.

However, despite the success of those loan signings, it is the stong core of home grown British talent which has stood out from the rest.

Everton have long been a breeding ground for home grown talent, with the likes of Wayne Rooney in the past, and it now seems the Toffees have new found talent, in the form of Leighton Baines, Seamus Coleman, Ross Barkley and now John Stones.

Baines and Barkley have been superb for the club this season, and are pretty much in the squad for the World Cup Finals in Brazil, due to their current form for the club, which have seen Everton rise up the table.

Aside from youth, Everton also have a host of experience, with goalkeeper Tim Howard,  club captain Phil Jagielka and Slyvain Distin all in terrific form.

And under Martinez, Everton have realisedhow to grind out results, which have proved vital for their Champions League prospects, with Everton scraping past Sunderland at the weekend for example in a 1-0 win, in a never say die attitude spirit, which has also seen them turn over the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United, with 14 goal striker Lukaku a key factor in the win over Arsenal.

They have also been hard to beat at home, losing just once at Goodison all season, which came in the Boxing Day defeat at home to Sunderland.

If both Merseyside clubs can continue their respective form, it would be a superb achievement for such a proud City.
