“United’s rivals must be getting worried”

0

It is five wins on the trot now for Manchester United in all competitions, and Chris Smalling believes other sides are now starting to look over their shoulders at David Moyes’ team.

Victories against Aston Villa, West Ham and Hull City have taken United to seventh in the Barclays Premier League, while a 13-point gap to leaders Arsenal has been cut to eight.

Momentum appears to be building for the first time since Moyes took over from Sir Alex Ferguson, particularly away from home. United have not lost on their travels in any competition since September 22 and today aim to make it 11 matches without defeat away from Old Trafford against Norwich City.

‘We hope they (other teams) are getting nervous,’ said Smalling. ‘We’re starting to get on a good run.

‘If people are starting to look over their shoulders, we’re doing a good job.

‘Despite our start, I don’t think you can ever write off United because of what they have done over the years. We knew our time would come and hopefully this is the start of a really good second half to the season where we can put the pressure on and move up the table.
‘We’re in a rich vein of form. It’s one of those seasons where there will be a few ups and downs and some teams have yet to have their downs. We have had our blip and can’t really afford any more.’

Smalling, who is likely to play right back owing to the groin and knee injuries suffered by Rafael and Phil Jones respectively, said United’s Boxing Day win at Hull felt like a turning point.

David Moyes’ side overturned a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2, and Smalling, 24, said: ‘That game showed we’re turning it around. We did that quite a few times last season and did it again at Hull. It shows a real togetherness. We have a bit more belief showing right through this team.

‘Even when we are flying, people may doubt us. We’re here to prove those doubters wrong.’

Arsenal and Tottenham target Luiz Gustavo open to Wolfsburg exit as Barca reveal interest

0

The 26-year-old only joined Wolfsburg in the summer, after leaving champions Bayern Munich in hope of more regular first-team action.

Arsenal came close to signing the Brazil international, but he chose to reject the chance to join the Premier League to improve his odds of gaining a place in this summer’s World Cup.

Barca are now interested in bringing the defensive midfielder to Spain, but, despite being flattered in the interest from the Spanish giants, the Brazilian has revealed he would consider a move to any club that reaches his release clause.

“It’s always good to have your name linked to Barcelona,” He told Globo Esporte.

“This is the third time there has been interest from them.

“I have a long contract which includes a buyout fee, and if anyone wants to pay that, they can sign me.”

Gustavo has only won 16 caps for Brazil, so will need to impress on the main stage to qualify for selection, which Arsenal can offer as they compete at the top of the Premier League and in the knock-out stages of the Champions League.

Juventus out to spoil Premier League chase for Real Madrid star

0

The Real Madrid star has faced much speculation over his future since the Bernabeu giants splashed out a world-record fee to sign Gareth Bale from Tottenham earlier this year.

Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal have all been linked with the winger, who has been a regular for Real Madrid since a 2010 transfer from Benfica.

However, he has not been guaranteed first-team football since Bale’s arrival in the Spanish capital and it is thought the nine-time European Cup winners will let him leave at the end of the season.

And if they do so Serie A Juventus champions are ready to compete for his signature, with manager Antonio Conte keen to deploy the Argentina international alongside Andrea Pirlo, Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal to complete a formidable midfield line-up.

Arsenal Have Deal In Place to Sign £12m Striker Loic Remy

0

Arsenal are ready to offer £12m for QPR striker Loic Remy, an offer that is believed to have be one the Championship side are willing to accept.

26 year old striker Remy is currently in the middle of a season long loan spell at Newcastle United and has once again proven himself more than capable of scoring regularly in the English top tier.

Remy netted six goals in 14 appearances for QPR last term but was unable to prevent Harry Redknapp’s side suffering relegation and was therefore sent to St James’ Park where he has continued to find the back of the net with alarming ease.

The former Marseille man has scored 10 goals in 16 appearances for Alan Pardew’s Newcastle United side, helping them to six spot, and the North-East club are known to also be keen on signing the forward on a permanent basis.

However Wenger is confident he can convince Remy to join fellow national team colleagues Laurent Koscielny, Olivier Giroud, Bacary Sagna and Abou Diaby at the North London club, with the carrot of Champions League football, if secured, perhaps a likely motivating factor.

Wenger is keen to bring in striking options to strengthen his attack but may feel he is able to wait until next summer before bringing in a new addition. Though Olivier Giroud has been heavily depended on for much of the current campaign the return of both Theo Walcott and Lukas Podolski from injury may convince the Arsenal man to hold out for Remy.

Erik Lamela wants Tottenham loan move

0

Tottenham’s £30million record signing Erik Lamela still wants to go out on loan with Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid keen on taking him.

The 21-year-old Argentinean made the request while Andre Villas Boas was still at White Hart Lane.

Lamela is desperate to play every week to keep his World Cup dream alive.

So far this season the winger, who can play on either side, has made just three Premier League starts.

Although he has publicly declared he is up for the challenge of breaking into the Spurs team, his private frustrations are well known and have attracted interest from a number of top European clubs.

Spurs, however, have no intention of farming Lamela out and retain high hopes for him.

The wideman was signed during the summer transfer window from Roma. At the time his capture was widely hailed as a coup for Tottenham.

It is understood, however, that he was one of four players that former Spurs boss Andre Villas Boas did not approve. Lamela was still recruited by chairman Daniel Levy and Technical Director Franco Baldini.

Villas Boas actually wanted Anzhi star Willian but was beaten to the Brazilian by former boss Jose Mourinho.

Adam Lallana happy at Southampton

0

Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana has admitted that he is happy at his current club and is ignoring any speculation linking him away from the club.

The English international has been in superb form for The Saints so far this season, and his continous performances have caught the eye of champions Manchester United, who are reported to be interested in making a £15million bid for the midfielder in January.

However, when questioned about his future, Lallana seemed adamant that his intentions are to stay in Southampton.

“I can’t express how happy I am at the club,” Lallana told the Daily Mirror. “I am so settled. Settled at home with a young child and my family live down here.

“I don’t think I am too comfortable either, I get challenged week in week out playing in the Premier League. It is where you want to be as a player.

“I am delighted and as happy as I have ever been here playing for Southampton with one of the best managers in the league.”

Branislav Ivanovic has forgiven Luis Suarez

0

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that defender Branisvlav Ivanovic has forgotten about the incident with Liverpool striker Luis Suarez that took place last season.

The Uruguayan was banned for ten-games after he appeared to bite the Serbian centre-back during last year’s 2-2 encounter near the end of last season, and as the two teams prepare to go head-to-head tomorrow, Mourinho has spoken about that incident.

The Portuguese has revealed that his centre-back will shake hands with the Liverpool striker and has moved on from what took place last year.

“This was a big thing, but Iva thinks it’s something from the past,” said Mourinho.

“Everyone moves on – he’s moved on.

“I think Iva is a big guy. When I say ‘big guy’, I mean big, strong heart, big strong personality.

“He’s not a Mickey Mouse player who complains at little things.”

Mark Lawrenson predictions for weekend

0

Wins for City, Arsenal, United and Chelsea predicted

With the Boxing Day schedule done with, it is more Premier League football just two days later with yet another full weeked of top-flight football, and here are Mark Lawrenson’s predictions.

WEST HAM 2-1 WEST BROMWICH ALBION

“I am convinced Allardyce will turn their form around. He just needs a win and I think he will get it against West Brom, who are still without a manager.”

ASTON VILLA 2-0 SWANSEA CITY

“I am backing Villa to get back to winning ways this weekend.”

HULL CITY 1-1 FULHAM

“They should give Hull a good game, although the Tigers are probably still wondering how they did not get anything out of their match with Manchester United on Boxing Day.”

MANCHESTER CITY 3-0 CRYSTAL PALACE

“City have won nine and drawn one of their last 10 games in all competitions, and won all nine games at home in the league this season. I cannot see Palace from stopping their run.”

NORWICH CITY 0-2 MANCHESTER UNITED
“Hughton’s side beat Manchester United at Carrow Road last season but I do not see them repeating that result this time.”
CARDIFF CITY 1-1 SUNDERLAND
“This is a huge game for both teams. Sunderland got a big win against Everton, which might end up being a turning point in their season.”
EVERTON 1-1 SOUTHAMPTON
“This is an excellent campaign for Everton although they might have another little hiccup on Sunday, because Southampton have had their bad spell and they look full of goals again.”
NEWCASTLE UNITED 0-2 ARSENAL
“This is another test for Arsenal, who are without the injured Aaron Ramsey, but I still think they are comfortable in these kind of games. Against the likes of Newcastle, I would always back them to win.”
CHELSEA 2-0 LIVERPOOL
“From what he has been saying, Blues boss Jose Mourinho is clearly not particularly enamoured with his side but he must realise that they keep winning games, keep chipping away, and keep getting some really good results.”
TOTTENHAM 2-0 STOKE CITY
“It was just one of those games that they just need to forget and move on. They will have a point to prove at White Hart Lane but I cannot see them stopping Spurs.”

West Ham United v West Bromwich Albion preview

0

West Ham United face West Bromwich Albion in a crunch game at Upton Park today, with Sam Allardyce’s men looking to crawl themselves out the relegation zone.

The Hammers have won just one Barclays Premier League games in 11 attempts  with the pressure mounting on boss Sam Allardyce to turn things around with high expectations surrounding the East London club.

West Ham have found it tough in recent weeks, and following the Boxing Day defeat at home to Arsenal, things are looking rather bleak for Allardyce’s side, with the Irons slipping to 19th in the Premier League table, as Allardyce walking on a tightrope.

The Hammers vastly improved performance, especially in attack, against Arsenal on Boxing Day has lightened the mood on the Upton Park terraces ahead of the visit of the Baggies.

However, goals have been rather hard to come by, after the side have only scored three times in their last five Premier League fixtures, and with injuries and suspentions heaping up on the squad, things look tough for the Hammers, with Andy Carroll sidelined for another couple of months or so.

Team news wise, the Hammers could be without James Collins, with Spanish keeper Adrian looking set to keep his place in goal, ahead of veteran Finnish keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.

With a recovering Andy Carroll unlikely to make a surprise appearance to repeat the 3-1 win for the Hammers the last time they met, West Ham will rely heavily on captain Kevin Nolan and defender James Tomkins., with Nolan returning from his ban.

West Bromwich Albion head into the fixture in mixed form, havin recently sacked Steve Clarke, following a defeat against Cardiff City, the Baggies have struggled to recapture the impressive form which saw the Midlands club finish Eighth in the Premier League table.

And with managerial uncertainty surrounding the club, the Baggies may face an uphill battle to get a result against a spirited Hammers side.

Despite their form, the Baggies picked up a positive point away at Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Boxing Day, as the Baggies battled to a 1-1 draw.

With the likes of Matej Vydra, Shane Long and Morgan Amalfitano to add spice to the attack.

Stoke City manager charged by FA

0

Hughes was sent to the stands during his side’s 5-1 Premier League defeat at St James’ Park on Boxing Day.

“It is alleged that his behaviour in or around the 40th minute of the fixture amounted to improper conduct,” said an FA statement.

Hughes has until 2 January 2014 to respond to the charge.

Stoke’s manager was also highly critical of referee Martin Atkinson following the game.

“There were a lot of decisions that left a lot to be desired, to be honest,” said Hughes.

If he accepts the charge or is found guilty, Hughes faces a financial penalty in a standard case and no touchline ban.

He was ordered from the dug-out after he reacted in fury to the first-half dismissal of midfielder Glenn Whelan.

Hughes was still making his way to a seat in the stand when defender Marc Wilson was also sent off.

Jose Mourinho believes Liverpool are genuine title contenders

0

The Portuguese feels that the Reds’s lack of European action could help them to a first championship in 24 years.

“They are not involved in the heat of the knock-out situation in the Champions League or even Europa League,” Mourinho said.

“Quality, plus ambition and this advantage – so yes, (they could win).”

Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal are all still in the Champions League, and Mourinho believes that Liverpool could end up playing 20 fewer games than some of their title challengers over the season.

“These players are going to play 60 matches. Liverpool will play 40 matches. It’s a big difference,” he continued.

“Liverpool are on holidays (for) one season – one week to prepare a match, play the match, one more week to prepare the next match. This is an advantage, an unbelievable advantage.”

Chelsea face Liverpool at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Sunday, with Luis Suarez making his first appearance against the West Londoners since serving a 10-match suspension for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in April.

The Uruguay striker has netted 19 goals in 13 Premier League appearances this season, but Mourinho feels that the 26-year-old is not Liverpool’s only threat.

“He didn’t start the season, with suspension, and after that the numbers are fantastic,” Mourinho said.

“When he came back, it was a big plus. But let’s be fair – Liverpool did very well without him when he was suspended.”

Vincent Tan promises extensive funds in January

0

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the leading contender for the post after putting contract talks with Norwegian side Molde on hold.

Tan is set to grant Mackay’s successor support in the January transfer window.

Former Manchester United striker Solskjaer, 40, started his coaching career at Old Trafford and was appointed reserve team manager in 2008.

He returned to Norway to join former club Molde as head coach in 2011, winning consecutive league titles in his first two seasons.

Sven Goran Eriksson and Murat Yakin have also been linked with the Cardiff job, but reports suggesting Yilmaz Vural could take the position are wide of the mark.

Cardiff striker Craig Bellamy was asked by chief executive Simon Lim last Friday if he would take charge of the team on an interim basis should Mackay be sacked, but he rejected the chance.

Malaysian businessman Tan walked out of Thursday’s 3-0 home defeat by Southampton and told Dalman of his decision to dismiss Mackay on Friday morning.

Dalman relayed the news to the club’s board of directors, which in turn joined Tan in giving him full mandate to recruit the next boss without interference.

Tan’s relationship with Mackay deteriorated after he accused the 41-year-old Scot of overspending last summer’s agreed transfer budget of £35m by around £15m.

Mackay and then-head of recruitment Iain Moody argued Tan and chief executive Lim were aware the initial figure was solely for transfer fees, knew it would increase to around £50m when factors such as salaries, image rights and agent fees were taken into consideration – and signed off each acquisition themselves.

Tan was particularly upset with Mackay’s claim before the defeat at Crystal Palace on 7 December that striker Andreas Cornelius “has an awful lot of potential for the future” having cost a club-record £8m when signed from FC Copenhagen in July.

Moody was sacked in October and although Tan was talked out of dismissing Mackay, the tension resurfaced when the manager expressed a desire – after his side’s 1-0 win against West Brom on 14 December – to make three news signings in January.

Lim released a statement from Tan on 16 December declaring the owner “extremely upset” with Mackay’s words and stating that “not a single penny” would be made available for reinforcements in the new year.

On the same day, Mackay received an e-mail from Tan detailing a long list of grievances and criticisms, concluding with the ultimatum that he resign or face being sacked.

Mackay refused to quit, so Tan flew to the UK last Friday with the intention of removing Mackay, only for Dalman to convince him to hold further talks before making a final judgement.

Those took place in London and ran into the early hours of Saturday morning before Tan travelled to Anfield for Cardiff’s 3-1 defeat at Liverpool, during which the away fans showed vociferous backing for Mackay and opposition towards the owner.

Mackay waved goodbye to the supporters thinking it would be his final game in charge. But after further discussions between Tan and Dalman on Saturday night, chairman Dalman released a statement announcing Mackay would meet the owner in a bid salvage their relationship and remain as boss for the “foreseeable future”.

But Mackay said his request for the meeting to take place on Monday or Tuesday was declined and that he hoped it would happen at the end of the week, a revelation which riled Tan.

The final straw for Tan came after the Southampton loss when Mackay said that “we’re washing our dirty linen in public at the moment”. He felt Mackay was the main perpetrator of such conduct.

Mackay was appointed Cardiff boss in June 2011 after replacing Dave Jones and guided them to the 2012 League Cup final before gaining promotion to the Premier League for the first time last season.

Tan recently spoke to Jones about returning to the club in some capacity – despite Jones taking legal action after he was sacked, the pair have repaired their relationship – but he decided against pursuing that idea.

Neymar wows in charity match

0

With the Spanish League currently on a winter break, Barcelona wonderkid Neymar took the chance to head back home to Brazil to take part in a special charity match against former Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan star Leonardo.

Friends of Neymar beat the Friends of Leonardo team 8-6 with Neymar scoring five goals and showing why he was so high on Barcelona’s transfer targets.

The 21-year-old returns to Spain in early January as Barca continue their campaign for domestic and European trophies, after which he has a World Cup in his homeland in July to prepare for.

The match was played in Gioania, Brazil, which is not one of the host cities for next summers World Cup Finals. Goinania lost out to the clout of Brasilia, the country’s modern capital.

Neymar is enjoying his time at home, his break being slightly extended after being suspended for the final match before the winter break.

His five goals were made to look easy by his standards and after helping Barcelona to knock Celtic out of Europe in the group stage of the Champions League his next target is to pose a threat to Manchester City when they meet at the Etihad on February 18 for the first leg of their Round of 16 European Cup clash.

Valencia are set to make a January move to prise forward Edin Dzeko away from Manchester City.

0

The Spanish club are understood to be in discussions with regards to a takeover by Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim, who will make it his priority to secure Champions League football for Valencia next season.

Valencia are currently 11th in La Liga but if the proposed buyout was to go through, Lim would be prepared to make around £40million available to manager Juan Antonio Pizzi in January.

Marca reports that Bosnian frontman Dzeko has been identified as the club’s leading target, as they look for the firepower that would bolster their European hopes.

Dzeko has started just six Premier League games this season for Manchester City and just three since August, with the outstanding form of Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo often keeping the 27-year-old on the substitutes’ bench.

City will be reluctant to lose the striker in the January transfer window, with Aguero ruled out for up to six more weeks with a calf problem, while Stevan Jovetic has been blighted by a series of injuries since arriving from Fiorentina for £22m.

Valencia will face competition for Dzeko from Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund, who are thought to be considering a £15m bid as they hunt a replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who is expected to move to Bayern Munich upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the season.
