Januzaj is getting kicked but must stop diving Says Moyes

0

Adnan Januzaj seems to be following the Cristiano Ronaldo route to stardom at Manchester United.

Just like Ronaldo, Januzaj has burst onto the first-team scene at the age of 18 with a series of dazzling performances.

As with the Portugal superstar, the teenager has become an instant favourite of the Old Trafford faithful.

And, just as Sir Alex Ferguson had to do with Ronaldo, so David Moyes has needed to step in and deliver some words of advice to try and curb a tendency to go down too easily.

Yet, as with Ronaldo, Moyes offers a stern defence of a player who has twice been booked for diving, the latest card arriving against West Ham on Saturday, and has now become, on a game for game average, the most fouled player in the Premier League.

‘I can only say what I see,’ said Moyes.

‘In the previous games he has been getting kicked from pillar to post and the referees have been quite happy to let that go.

‘They have not been too bothered about doing anything about it.

‘The boy was wrong with what happened on Saturday and we have told him about it. But we all make one or two mistakes and the boy will learn as he gets older.

‘The thing is, when you are getting kicked all the time and folk are lunging into tackles into you, sometimes you have to jump out of the way or you are going to get hurt.

‘That is what I continually say. I just hope it doesn’t take a sore one before people start doing something about it.’

A decade ago, Ferguson was saying very similar things about Ronaldo

And while Moyes fought shy of comparing the two, it is an obvious reference point for what could be achieved by Januzaj.

‘Some people need to realise this is a young talent,’ said Moyes. ‘At the moment they are kicking him but it is right, they also kicked Ronaldo and look at the player he went on to be.

‘Adnan will also go on to become a great player in time.

‘At the moment the job is to make sure he is able to play.’

With Robin van Persie almost certain to miss out with a thigh injury and Danny Welbeck a doubt due to the bang on the knee that forced him out of Saturday’s win over West Ham, Moyes is likely to be relying on Januzaj to some extent at Hull on Boxing Day.

For Hull’s record of conceding just three goals on home soil this term is the best in the Premier League, with only Manchester City even getting close.

‘It is a great record,’ said Moyes.

‘In this league you have either got to score plenty of goals or not concede them, it is one or the other.

‘As far as Steve Bruce is concerned, it means he has a good base and his team are hard to beat.

‘It gives him a platform to play off and means he can hope the odd goal wins him matches.

‘It will be a tough game that’s for sure but we have got ourselves on a winning run and hopefully we can continue that.’

Rodgers encourages Liverpool fans to think about winning the title

0

he Reds will be top on December 25 for the first time since 2008 – when they became the last side not to win the title from that position.

Since then the 19-time champions have been in gradual decline, and even at this stage of last season Liverpool had not been in the top half of the table at any time.

The current campaign has seen them drop out of the top six for only two days and they have spent four separate spells at the top of the table and for that reason Rodgers can understand why supporters are in jubilant mood.

It is not a feeling which is felt within their Melwood training base, however.

‘You don’t get the rewards at Christmas. It is a nostalgic time and people always want to know where the team is at around Christmas Day,’ he said.

‘We want to be there but we want to be there at the end of the season and for that there is a lot of hard work ahead.

‘It is brilliant for supporters, I am not going to deny them a dream – it is nice for us all to dream.

‘It has been a hard period in this club for four or five years and this (being top) was probably a distant thought for them.
‘They have to enjoy it but for me as a manager my concentration has always been and always will be on the next game.

‘That has served us well and seen us grow so I won’t change that. Strategically we have to keep pushing the club forward.

‘We can’t be complacent and we won’t be because we haven’t done anything yet.

‘We are top at Christmas, which is great, but we need to continue that run in the second half of the season.’

Boxing Day’s game at Manchester City will mark the halfway point of the campaign and, irrespective of the result at the Etihad Stadium, Liverpool will still be considered title challengers.

It is not a role many of the players will be familiar with but Rodgers does not believe that makes a difference yet.

‘Of course there are teams who will have much more experience than ourselves at winning titles but you only get that experience by doing it and focusing on the job,’ added the Reds boss.

‘If we can continue with that over the course of the next 10 games we will assess it for the final run in.

‘You need to get that experience from somewhere and you only do that by going on and winning games.

‘Since January we have shown we can consistently perform and win games on a regular basis and we have shown we are a very attack-minded team – we have the most goals of a Premier League team in this calendar year.’

This will be a testing time for Liverpool as injuries are starting to bite and it may be a while before he has a full-strength squad to choose from.

‘Our squad is very thin at the moment. We have 17 players at the moment, which is unfortunate at this very busy period,’ added Rodgers.

‘None of the guys who have been out have returned and there is still the timeline which was set for them.

‘Steven (Gerrard) is working really well on the field and may be the one who is back a little bit sooner as he has been getting round the clock treatment (for a hamstring strain).

‘Jose Enrique’s (knee) operation was four weeks last Thursday so he has a bit of time and Daniel Sturridge is progressing well but it is still going to be into January before he will be back (from an ankle sprain).’

Defender Glen Johnson insists Liverpool have a first-choice XI which is a match for any of their bigger-spending rivals.

We take each game as it comes but if we can go to White Hart Lane and perform like we did there (winning 5-0) is no reason why we can’t win these games,’ he said.

‘In terms of the starting XI I think we can compete. It is just getting it right on the day and everyone performing to the best we can.

‘If we can do that we can cause anyone problems, it doesn’t matter how much money they spend.’

If Liverpool have a weakness it is when they have to look outside their primary first-choice side for replacements.

Young right-back Jon Flanagan is currently playing on the left of the defence because of injury to Jose Enrique and the unsuitability of loan signing Aly Cissokho while they are light in central midfield.

Johnson accepts they do not have the numbers other teams may have but believes there is a greater team spirit in their smaller unit.

‘We all know we need much more than our starting XI, I think we have some great players around the squad that know that,’ he added.

‘With some clubs anyone who is not starting may get the hump, not train well and throw their toys out a bit.

‘Whereas we have got good lads and good professionals around who people realise they have to wait their turn.

‘But we have been using a few different formations so it gives a few people an opportunity to play and because everyone knows they are on the verge of playing it keeps the squad tighter together rather than having the same XI every single week.’

Cabaye and Mata top PSG’s Premier League hitlist

0

Paris Saint-Germain are looking to sign Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye in the January sales, as well as Blues duo Juan Mata and Eden Hazard, according to L’Equipe.

The French publication have revealed the Ligue 1 champions’ alleged transfer list for the January window, and it’s not pretty reading for Newcastle and Chelsea fans.

PSG are currently sitting top of their domestic division, but that hasn’t stopped rumours spreading as they look to build a squad capable of winning European competitions.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani lead an impressive (but, expensive) strike force, though there attentions have now turned to the men creating chances for the duo, as players such as Javier Pastore and Jeremy Menez haven’t quite hit the new high standards in the capital.

Juventus midfielder, formerly of Manchester United, Paul Pogba is another name mentioned by L’Equipe, and he shares a similar goal as Newcastle man Cabaye in trying to make Didier Deschamp’s World Cup squad for June.

Alan Pardew has praised his influential playmaker in recent weeks for keeping his head and putting his full commitment in this season to find form once again in the Premier League.

Cabaye was subject to a ÂŁ10million bid from Arsenal in the summer, and skipped training sessions and matches alike as he looked to seek a move away.

That switch didn’t materialize, but a Champions League venture with PSG would probably suit the 27-year-old, as it would also boost the chances of him starting in Brazil for Les Bleus.

Juan Mata has been frozen out at Chelsea this season, the ‘Special One’ Jose Mourinho insisting the Spaniard doesn’t fit in his style of football, preferring Oscar in the No 10 role instead.

The 24-year-old is still highly-rated in the all-conquering Spanish national team, and seamingly every neutral fan in England, not to mention the Chelsea fanbase. He may have had enough of the substitutes bench after another failed outing at Arsenal on Monday night, completely sitting out the 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium.

He has won Player of the Year at the club two years in the row, and may need a move in January for a different reason than Cabaye, to boost general playing time to be picked by Vicente Del Bosque and Spain.

Belgian winger Eden Hazard is a new man to be linked with PSG, and probably the least likely to take the Winter plunge across the Channel.

Unlike Mata, Mourinho seems to be a fan of the former Lille man, but can a move back ‘home’ to Ligue 1 tempt him?

The January transfer window is often heavily criticized by managers because of disruptions to their team, not to mention their supporters urging for cash to be spent.

And things may not get any easier for Premier League managers, with PSG lurking ready to snap up any unwanted (or, wanted) talent.

Poyet wants Brighton duo.

0

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet is planning a January swoop for Brighton duo Liam Bridcutt and Leonardo Ulloa, as the Blackcats battle against relegation from the Barclays Premier League.

And it is understood that Poyet will make a bid for the Seagulls pair, who are currently flying high in the Skybet Championship table, with Oscar Garcia’s men looking to mount another charge up the league table into an automatic promotion spot.

Bridcutt, 24, was signed by Poyet from Chelsea in 2010 and has established a reputation as one of the most highly-rated playmakers outside the Premier League.

Ulloa signed for the Sussex club in the July of this year, and has been a stand out performer for the impressive Seagulls so far, netting 13 goals in 28 League games, and Poyet believe the lure of the Premier League may convince Bridcutt to join the fight against relegation.

Bridcutt attracted interest from newly promoted sides Crystal Palace and Hull City, aswell as Championship side Nottingham Forest, but rumours are that Poyet will test Brighton’s willingness and submit a bid to the Sussex side.

Poyet is certain to face opposition from Brighton following his acrimonious sacking from the Championship club in June for alleged gross misconduct.

Brighton manager Oscar Garcia is to slap a ÂŁ5 million price tag upon the pair, as Albion are on the brink of the play off positions.

But Poyet is determined to make changes to his squad as he battles to avoid relegation, with a left-back and striker also top priorities.

“My aim all the time is to do things quickly in January,” he said. “We’re having meetings practically every day and we’re getting close to January now.

“January 1 is a Wednesday, it’s not on the weekend, so if there are not any problems with bringing them in from abroad, they could be signed that day.”

The Weirside club travel to inform Everton in the boxing day clash tomorrow.

Fulham resign Dempsey.

0

Fulham have resigned former favourite Clint Dempsey on a two month loan deal, following Dempsey passing a successful medical.

The capture of the American international will most certainly be an early Christmas present for Fulham supporters, who are sure to take to Dempsey, as he re joins the West London side in a real relegation battle.

Dempsey’s move will cover both January and February, which will see Dempsey retain match fitness ahead of the new season of the MLS with Seattle Sounders, with the season kicking off in mid March, and of course Dempsey will be representing his nation in Brazil next summer.

Dempsey’s return to English football doesn’t come as a surprise, with a move being lined up for Dempsey to spend a spell at a Premier League, with Aston Villa previously interested in his services, but Dempsey chose to return to Craven Cottage to help save Fulham’s season.

Dempsey, of course, played for Fulham from 2007 to 2012 and was voted the team’s MVP in his final season. He scored 60 goals in 225 appearances in those five-and-a-half seasons in the top flight of the English professional game.

Dempsey helped the Lillywhites to a UEFA Cup campaign under the management of now England manager Roy Hodgson, and scored in the final defeat to Spanish side Atletico Madrid.

Dempsey, 30, left Craven Cottage to join Tottenham for ÂŁ6m in 2012 and then moved back to the US in August..

The return of Dempsey will most certainly be a morale boost for many supporters, with the American able for selection for the boxing day trip to Norwich City.

Martinez plays down title talk

0

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has said it is far too early to be talking about his side lifting the title this season.

Everton head into Christmas just two points off the top of the table, having lost just once this season.

They will be looking for more points over the festive period – they face Sunderland and Southampton in back-to-back home games in the space of a few days this week. Victories would motivate the club to feeling they could lift their first Premier League title.

But Martinez said: ‘We are in December. I would not be foolish enough to speak about the league. It is too early in the season.

‘All we are doing is trying to be very consistent in our performances.

‘The stats reflect that – only one defeat in 17 is a consistent way of performing.

‘The next thing is to carry on developing, carry on working hard.

‘I feel we haven’t reached our full potential and that excites me.

‘That is the only focus that we have through this festive period.

‘We just want to get to April with the biggest amount of points we can.

‘That is the moment we sit down and look at the table and set the aims for the season in the league campain.’

Avoiding defeat in the next two games would mean that Everton would be unbeaten in the league at home in 2013.

Everton have not lost at home in the competition since their visit from Chelsea on December 30th last year.

Martinez said: ‘I don’t think that is a stat we want to be focusing on. Obviously we want to win every game we go into.

‘The reality is if you get an award or a trophy for doing that, we would consider that, but what we want is to finish as high as we can at the end of the season, and the home form is going to be vital for that.

‘It is something special at Goodison. The fans and the players have a real unity that helps you to get through adversity and disappointment.

‘That has been a real advantage and we don’t want that to change.’

Martinez will not be taking his next match lightly despite Sunderland’s position at the bottom of the table.

History is against Sunderland with only one side having escaped the “Christmas curse,” that side was West Brom.

But Martinez claims he has seen signs of change under new Sunderland boss Gus Poyet, who took charge in October, and thinks they can avoid the drop.

He said: ‘When you have got a team that is capable of beating Man City in the manner that they did, you know they are going to get wins against anyone.

‘They have been going through a transitional period.

‘The new manager has brought different ideas.

‘It was a phenomenal performance against Manchester City. They have got good footballers and they can hurt you in possession.

‘This league can be very tough. You are not going to get an outstanding win and then link it up with another two or three good results – it doesn’t happen when you are down there.

‘But if you have got the quality to get that outstanding result, it shows you can get enough results coming strong in the final third of the season.

‘I see Sunderland being a team that grow into the season and finish the season really strongly.

‘The team is starting to get used to his ideas and his vision. I know he is going to bring a lot of success to Sunderland.

‘We will have to be at our best and prepared for a tough afternoon.’

Everton could welcome back England left-back Leighton Baines after a month out with a broken toe.

Allardyce blasts Tomkins for TOWIE night out

0

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has lashed out at James Tomkins saying he should not have been at a well-known nightspot during Sunday morning.

The defender was arrested and charged with assaulting a policeman after an incident at Brentwood’s Sugar Hut – a venue which found fame for being a key spot on the ITV reality show The Only Way Is Essex.

Though insistent that Tomkins would continue to play for West Ham and would be considered for Thursday’s home game against Arsenal, Allardyce was unhappy that he was out so late at night.

‘Because of the legal side of it, it is difficult for me to comment,’ Allardyce said.

‘The only thing I can is that I don’t think James should have been there, irrespective of whether he got into trouble or not.

‘It is the biggest profile public house in this country probably and he would have been better if he had stayed away.

‘From a club’s point of view, there is nothing he has broken in terms of rules. It is five or six days till the next game so what will happen from a legal point of view, we will have to wait and see.’

Allardyce also revealed his players hadn’t been given a Christmas curfew but still expects them to behave responsibly.

‘I expect them to be professional enough without me telling them what they should or shouldn’t be doing.

‘Within the confines of what we can do and what we can restrict them to, based on the fact that we can’t anyone 100 per cent from doing anything because the PFA wouldn’t allow us to do that so we have certain restrictions bout being on licensed premises at a certain time in the week before the next game comes along and that was well outside of that.’

Tomkins is due to appear at Basildon Magistrates’ Court on January the 9th.

Allardyce said: ‘I can’t give out any punishment yet because he has pleaded not guilty and I think when we come to a conclusion in the case, we can see what the situation is.

‘From a football point of view, he is a footballer we need. He is obviously a big player for West Ham and he is West Ham born and bred.

‘It is an incident which we wish had never happened and we won’t really know the outcome until or if it goes to court. Until then it is: “Get on with the job, get on performing well for West Ham if and when he is selected”.’

Sneijder set to snub United

0

Dutch star Wesley Sneijder appears to have killed rumours that he is set to join Manchester United in January, insisting that he is happy at Galatasaray.

Galatasaray claimed in September that United made an ‘indirect offer’ to the 29-year-old, while Sneijder previously came close to signing for Manchester United back in 2011 in a ÂŁ35million deal but pulled out due to the Dutchman’s expensive demands. The Dutchman wanted to earn ÂŁ200,000-a-week.

Speculation persists that United boss David Moyes could be tempted to move for Sneijder in January, as he looks to add a creative midfielder who can help turn the team’s fortunes around.

It has been reported that Sneijder was prepared to take a wage cut in order to force through a move to Old Trafford.

However, is thought that Moyes is keen to bring the average age of United’s squad down and could look to younger, more long term additions to the team. Sneijder maintains that there has been no contact from United.

‘You would know better than me if I received any offers. Up to now there have been no offers,’ Sneijder told Beyaz TV.

‘There are rumours about me in every transfer window. I look forward to the end of transfer windows so people stop talking about me. I’m very happy here with the team and the fans. I have no reason to leave.

‘This type of news always happens. You just need to wait until the end of the window.’

Sneijder, who won the Champions League with Inter Milan, moved to Galatasaray in January 2013 in a reported ÂŁ8.4million deal, where he is reported to be under contract until 2016.

Pardew keen to keep Cabaye

0

Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye has been strongly linked with PSG for some time, leading the race for the Frenchman’s signature ahead of Liverpool and Arsenal.

Cabaye however has played down rumours that the Parisiens are chasing him and added he had recieved no contact from the Ligue 1 giants. He still refused to rule out a move though, adding: “Who wouldn’t want to join PSG today?”

Towards the end of the summer transfer window, Arsene Wenger was keen to sign the Frenchman but had a number of bids rejected by the Tyne-side club. Cabaye was left out of the squad at the start of the season as a result but has managed to find his form and a regualr place in the starting 11.

Pardew is slightly reluctant to see his star midfielder leave and adds that his side’s financial postion means they are under no ogligation to sell players.

Pardew said: “I am pretty confident that my owner and the club are in a great financial position. I would be a lot more nervous if we weren’t,”

“He’s a great player, there are always going to be big clubs sniffing around him. We are fortunate to have him, we are enjoying him while he is here and long may that continue.”

Mikel Arteta admits John Obi Mikel could nearly have got a red

0

The pair went head-to-head for the ball with studs showing during the first half of the Monday Night Football clash at the Emirates, but referee Mike Dean allowed play to continue and neither player was cautioned.

Replays suggested that Arteta came off worse in the tackle due to the timing of Mikel’s lunge, and he believes that the Chelsea midfielder got away lightly with the challenge.

“On that moment I think that he caught me high – I’ve got a big swollen ankle,” Arteta told Sky Sports after the game.

“I think that he got late on the ball.

“You ask me if it is intentional or not – I believe that is why the referee didn’t give him a red card.”

Arteta did admit that both players were committed to the challenge, but thinks that the way in which Mikel flew in was more dangerous than his attempt to win the ball.

“I was not facing him and he points his studs towards me,” he said.

“I think it is a different challenge.

“We were both going for the ball and that is what I am saying, I think probably the referee thought it was not intentional.

“I cannot judge what Obi was trying to do, I think he challenged the ball but sometimes you are late and if you are late with your studs up you know what happens.”

Transfer Twist: Di Maria denies reports of Monaco move

0

Di Maria has struggled for regular first team football since the arrival of new manager Carlo Ancelotti and record signing Gareth Bale. He has also managed just 2 league goals this seaon and this lead to reports strongly linking him with Ligue 1 side AS Monaco.

However the big spenders are set to miss out on the chance to sign the winger in January as the 25 year-old has ruled out a move.

Di Maria said: “I do not want to go. I want to win my place in the team. Not me, nor anyone in my camp, has asked for a new contract. What came out was lies.”

“I have been through some difficult days. I am just thinking about Real Madrid and I am still working hard. I have to keep going and try to earn a place in the team.”

Moyes hails Rooney’s role in United revival

0

David Moyes believes Wayne Rooney is setting the standard for Manchester United.

For most of the summer it seemed certain Rooney would be heading out of Old Trafford.

In the end, United’s hierarchy stood firm and their new manager has worked wonders in getting Rooney focused after all the uncertainty.

And that has proved to be a masterstroke given Rooney has been United’s key man this term as Robin van Persie’s contribution faltered.

‘What Wayne is doing is making the others play well because he is playing well,’ said Moyes.

‘He has turned himself into a real team player.

‘With the assists for the team and the goals, his all-round contribution has been fantastic.’

Just as important as the work Rooney has put in on the pitch, Moyes has detected a desire to assume more responsibility off it.

Less than 12 months short of his 10th anniversary as a United player, with Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand playing a much reduced role these days and with Darren Fletcher only just back from major injury, Rooney is effectively the elder statesman in the Red Devils dressing room.

And with the status has come a willingness to pass on crucial guidance to the present crop of youngsters.

‘He needs to show the young players,’ said Moyes.

‘You go through the years and look at people like Ryan Giggs and the advice he gave to Wayne Rooney. Wayne has now to give it to Adnan Januzaj and the new players coming up.

‘He has a big responsibility to show the next generation the standards that Manchester United set and what you have to do every week if you are going to play for this club.’

Rooney will be a key figure at Hull on Boxing Day, when United look to extend their winning run to five matches, which would be the most they have managed under Moyes so far.

Marouane Fellaini will not be involved though, with Moyes confirming his ÂŁ27.5million summer signing will be out for up to six weeks following wrist surgery.

It represents another negative in a disappointing start to his United career for the Belgium star, although Moyes insists Fellaini will come good.

‘I have no doubt he will eventually be a good player for us,’ said Moyes.

He has been unlucky. He has not felt 100 per cent because of his wrist and has been finding it difficult.

‘I asked him to see if he could get over the Christmas period. He got the back injury against Everton and since then he has never really been right.’

Hazard to snub PSG advances

0

The Chelsea and Belgium international has been under the radar of the Parisiens as of late and were looking to buy the winger during the January transfer window.

Hazard, who was bought in 2012 from Lille for ÂŁ32m, has struggled for a regular first-team place under new manager Jose Mourinho and as a result, PSG felt they could move in and sign the 22 year old. They feel he could provide a special touch to the side and would work well alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson cavani.

But according to Le10Sport, Hazard will reject the move and opt to stick with Chelsea until at least next summer. But PSG may return with a new offer as their current winger Jeremy Menez is expected to leave at the end of the season when his contract expires.

Wilshere hits out over two-game ban

0

Jack Wilshere admitted he was wrong to react the way he did against Manchester City, but said that it was hard for him as a father to ignore insults about his children.

The Arsenal midfielder was handed a two-match suspension by the FA for his one-fingered salute to opposition fans during the 6-3 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

But he defended himself, tweeting: ‘Shouldn’t of reacted the way I did but I know all you dads out there love your kids the way I do… suppose I will just have to take the abuse about my kids in future.’

Wilshere has two children with girlfriend Lauren Neal, Archie, 2, and Delilah, who was born in September this year.

The 21-year-old admitted the charge of making an abusive gesture, but sought to have the ban reduced. However, his appeal was rejected and his ban will finish after the Boxing Day fixture against West Ham.

Wilshere also revealed he was gutted to miss out on the Monday night fixture against Premier League title rivals Chelsea, which ended in a 0-0 draw.

FA chairman Greg Dyke had empathised with the player’s frustrations, but insisted the highest examples must always be maintained by players.

‘As a supporter I sympathise with the players because of the flak they get from the crowd,’ Dyke said on talkSPORT.

‘People can lose their cool very quickly, but he’s very well paid to play the game and he’s got to learn to cope with it. ‘You think back over many years of players who were hot-headed when they were younger, but not when they get older. They just learn and mature. That is what happens. It is part of life.’

The FA handed Liverpool’s Luis Suarez a one-match ban and a ÂŁ20,000 fine for a similar offence in December 2011.

Meanwhile, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is aiming to make his return from injury in the FA Cup third round clash against Tottenham on January 4.

The 20-year-old has been out since the first day of season after straining the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee following a 50/50 tackle with Antonio Luna in the 3-1 loss to Aston Villa.

Missed opportunity!

0

The Arsenal manager said his team should have been awarded a penalty in the first half when Theo Walcott was tripped by Willian in the area.

The Gunners also missed a flurry of late second-half chances, and Wenger was left slightly frustrated at the result.

“I have regrets because I felt we should have won this game,” he told Arsenal Player. “They had one chance in the first half and I think it was a penalty for us [for the trip on Walcott].

“Overall in the second half we had two or three good opportunities that we didn’t take. But it was the kind of game that was locked tactically by Chelsea because they wanted to catch us on the break.

“If felt we were a bit edgy at the start because of our last result and it took us a while to get going. You saw that Chelsea, when they took Torres off and put Oscar up front, were happy with a draw and to lock up the game.

“We were maybe a bit less fluent than we can be and played a little bit with the handbrake because we knew we had not to lose that game if we could not win it. It is a consequence of [the games against] Everton and Man City.

“It is a missed opportunity but I cannot fault the desire of the team, they gave absolutely everything.”
